Dental Examination
Periodontal disease is diagnosed by your dentist, dental hygienist or your periodontist during a periodontal examination. This type of exam should always be part of your regular dental check-up.
X-rays
Routine dental x-rays – X-rays can be effectively used to screen for bone loss in the upper and lower jaw, and the dentist can provide interventions for preventing and treating periodontal disease. It is believed that minimizing periodontal disease will help treat osteoporosis.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, cheek tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.

Teeth Cleaning
If the disease is caught in the early stages of gingivitis, and no damage to the supporting bone has been done, one to two regular cleanings will be recommended. You will also be given instructions on improving your daily oral hygiene habits and having regular dental cleanings.

Root amputation is a specialized dental procedure, whereby one root is removed from a multi-root tooth. The tooth is then stabilized and rendered fully functional with a crown or filling. The multi-root teeth best suited to the root amputation procedure are the molars at the back of the mouth. These large flat teeth have either two or three roots depending on whether they are situated on the upper or lower jaw.
Bridges
Improved gum health – Periodontal disease is a progressive condition that can destroy soft tissue very rapidly. Soft tissue grafting can halt tissue and bone loss, and protect exposed roots from further complications. This procedure can maintain the health of the tooth during active orthodontics when thin gums prevent tooth movement, or when thin gums prevent proper restorative work such as crowns and bridges.

Root Canal Treatment
Prior to root amputation, it is necessary to perform root canal treatment. The amputation itself involves cutting deep into the tooth where blood vessels and nerves are located. For this reason, the pulp of the tooth including these vessels and nerves needs to be removed before resectioning the roots. The root canal and amputation treatments will be performed under local anesthetic.

Gingivectomy and Gingivoplasty
Gingivoplasty (soft tissue recontouring) – As gums recede due to periodontitis, the teeth may appear longer or thickened; causing a “toothy” smile. The periodontist can remove tissues or straighten the gum line to make the teeth look more even.
Periodontal Surgery
If the pockets do not heal after scaling and root planing, periodontal surgery (pocket reduction surgery) may be needed to reduce pocket depths, making teeth easier to clean. Your dentist may also recommend that you see a Periodontist (specialist of the gums and supporting bone).
Deep Cleaning
Periodontal disease is a progressive condition which leads to severe inflammation and tooth loss if left untreated. Antibiotic treatments can be used in combination with scaling and root planning, curettage, surgery or as a stand-alone treatment to help reduce bacteria before and/or after many common periodontal procedures.

Dentures
Acellular dermal matrix allograft – This procedure uses medically processed, donated human tissue as a tissue source for the graft. The advantage of this is procedure is that there is no need for a donor site from the patient’s palate (and thus, less pain). Unfortunately, since this graft comes from the skin tissue, the color and texture does not match the gum tissue. This option may well serve if the patient is wearing a denture and is not concerned with the looks of the graft.

Dental Implants
A dental implant is essentially an artificial tooth root which is attached to the jaw bone. Eventually, a replacement tooth or bridge will be firmly fixed to this root, restoring complete function to the tooth. The key to a successful and long-lasting implant is the quality and quantity of jawbone to which the implant will be attached. If bone has been lost on the back side of the upper jaw due to injury or periodontal disease, a sinus augmentation can raise the sinus floor to allow for new bone formation.

Ridge Augmentation
Ridge augmentation – Ridges in the bone can occur due to trauma, injury, birth defects or severe periodontal disease. The bone graft is used to fill in the ridge and make the jawbone a uniform shape.
Bone Grafting
Autogenous bone graft – In this type of graft the bone is removed from elsewhere in the body and implanted in the mouth. Common donor sites for bone grafting include, the chin and the posterior third molar areas of the jaw. If large amounts of bone need to be harvested, the hip or the shin bone (tibia) is generally used.

Orthodontics
Gingival recession (receding gums) refers to the progressive loss of gum tissue, which can eventually result in tooth root exposure if left untreated. Gum recession is most common in adults over the age of 40, but the process can begin in the teenage years. Recession may follow active orthodontics when teeth are crowded and had to be moved forward in the arch to make room for other teeth to move in.
