There are two general types of urinary retention: obstructive and non-obstructive. If there is an obstruction (for example, kidney stones), urine cannot flow freely through the urinary tract. Non-obstructive causes include a weak bladder muscle and nerve problems that interfere with signals between the bladder and the brain. If the nerves aren’t working properly, the brain may not get the message that the bladder is full.

If the PSA is rising despite ADT, but there is no visible evidence of cancer anywhere, Erleada may offer a chance to delay the cancer from spreading. A spot of cancer that has spread outside the prostate is called a metastasis, so this treatment is aimed at preventing metastatic spread. Erleada is a pill that is taken every day and continued for as long as it is working, which on average is about two years based on a large clinical trial. While the medication is generally well tolerated, there is always a possibility of a side effect. Fatigue, nausea, falls and hypothyroidism have all been reported. There is also a risk of developing a skin rash.

When you get services from an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center, certain providers there may be out-of-network. In these cases, the most those providers may bill you is your plan’s in-network cost-sharing amount. This applies to emergency medicine, anesthesia, pathology, radiology, laboratory, neonatology, assistant surgeon, hospitalist or intensivist services. These providers can’t balance bill you and may not ask you to give up your protections not to be balance billed.

Chemotherapy
PROVENGE® (sipuleucel-T) is an innovative autologous cellular immunotherapy generally employed as an advanced prostate cancer treatment option. Provenge activates the body’s immune system to seek out and attack the prostate cancer. This is not chemotherapy, nor is it a hormone therapy. Provenge is an immunotherapy that reprograms the body’s ability to fight the cancer. This treatment is usually given to someone who does have known metastases (cancer that has spread outside of the prostate).

A vasectomy prevents the sperm from exiting the penis during ejaculation. The procedure is very quick, and you can go home the same day. Studies show that a vasectomy is over 99% effective at preventing future pregnancies, making it the most effective form of birth control.

Because robotic surgery is minimally invasive, most patients do not need to be in a hospital and can recover in the comfort of their own homes with their family nearby rather than staying overnight in a hospital.

Pelvic organ prolapse is a condition that is caused by a weakening of the normal support of the pelvic floor with aging or after a hysterectomy and can lead to incontinence and/or an abnormal bulge in the vagina.

Laparoscopic Surgery
Robotic laparoscopic surgery is used for problems with pelvic organ prolapse, a common problem for women which primarily results from vaginal deliveries. Robotic surgery allows a minimally invasive approach for this operation as an outpatient surgery with no hospitalization.

Physical Therapists

Physical Therapy
Following treatment of prostate cancer – surgery, radiation, or brachytherapy (“seeds”) – patients can experience leakage of urine due to side effects of the therapy. Some patients will improve with non-invasive treatment such as pelvic floor physical therapy, but others may have leakage that means they must wear pads or other absorbent products. This can significantly impact a patient’s quality of life, leading to avoiding social interactions, decreasing the amount of fluid one drinks, impacting sexual activity, etc. Depending on unique patient characteristics, treatment options could include a minimally invasive sling procedure, or even an Artificial Urinary Sphincter device that can give you back control of your bladder. Your urologist can help you decide on the best option to achieve your individual goals.
