The decision to have cosmetic surgery should not be made on a whim, but rather should be thoroughly studied and researched. There are physicians performing cosmetic surgery today who were not doing it twenty years ago. In addition to Plastic Surgeons who have always been considered the “experts”, other physicians and surgeons are now trying to gain more credibility as cosmetic surgeons. Many otolaryngologists (ENT), advertise as “Facial Plastic Surgeons”, and perform cosmetic procedures. Dermatologists are now advertising in the Yellow Pages under the Plastic Surgery heading, as are Ophthalmologists. Obstetricians, Gynecologists, Family Medicine, and Internal Medicine doctors are also doing liposuction. You can choose any doctor you want to perform your procedure, but please be careful, and be informed. If you want a Plastic Surgeon to perform your procedure, then make sure the person you see is a Plastic Surgeon. When you call to make your appointment, you must ask, “Is the doctor board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery ”. If he is not, he may not be a Plastic Surgeon.
