        Bar Luca

        Restaurants

        1100 Stratton AveNashville, TN

Jan. 5, 2016 - Wine bars are rare in Nashville, a town brimming with craft beer and whiskey in excess, which immediately made Bar Luca a diamond in the rough -- not to mention one hot commodity (at any time of year, but in particular the dark, short days of winter).   This cozy community meeting spot off of hopping Gallatin Pike debuted quietly over Thanksgiving weekend, but the masses found it nonetheless: There's yet to be a night when Bar Luca isn't overflowing with neighborhood locals, as well as those who made the journey from the other side of the bridge to see what the fuss was all about.   But those who don't love wine shouldn't be deterred: There are a number of regional brews on tap, as well as other domestic beers in bottles, and plenty of classic cocktails on the menu such as the Moscow Mule, Old Fashioned, and French 75. While the bar doesn't serve a full meal per se, you can definitely fill up on the apps and snacks. The food offerings are heavy on charcuterie and build-your-own cheese boards -- heed my advice and just go ahead and order the All In -- as well as olive snacks and popcorn platters. In other words, Bar Luca has a little something for everybody and no doubt will be a popular neighborhood hang for the long haul.

        Sinema

        Restaurants

        2600 8th Ave South, Suite 102Nashville, TN

Dec. 23, 2015 - Tis the season ... for holiday-themed cocktail menus! And where better to get into the spirit than at Sinema's swanky lounge, which already feels festive year-round with its Art Deco-vibe and Old Hollywood flair? Absinthe enthusiasts will dig the White Christmas, which also includes Crème de Menthe, Orgeat, egg white, cream, and nutmeg. Those who want a virtual trip to the Hawaiian islands can order a Mele Kalikimaka (rum, Cacao liqueur, pineapple, orange, coconut, and nutmeg). And for fellow 'Harry Potter' lovers like me, the Holidays in Hogsmeade (apple brandy, Demerara syrup, Allspice liqueur, and cinnamon) is a true treat.

March 9, 2015 - Nashville is full of farm-to-table fare. We’ve got the "upscale Southern" thing down pat. What we've long been lacking is somewhere a bit fancier for a nice night out on the town or -- in my case -- a fancy brunch for a birthday soiree.

Since Sinema debuted on Franklin Pike last summer, you could say I've become somewhat of a regular. Rather for a nicer dinner downstairs, a fancy party, or just drinks with friends in the upstairs lounge, it’s become a convenient hangout for me. And it became all the more convenient when the restaurant started serving brunch a few months ago -- and brunch in a town that's sorely lacking weekend brunch services at that.

The first time I went for Sinema brunch, I had to get the I Dream of French Toast, Chef Dale Levitski's decadent cardamom sugar-crusted Amish sourdough, with butternut, pecan, banana, maple, and Cool Whip, after he made a similar version at last year’s Music City Food & Wine... And I definitely did dream of that French toast on many occasions until Sinema started offering brunch later that fall.

For my birthday brunch, though, I noticed a newer sweet treat on the menu: an apple cobbler waffle. I mean, how can you see that and not order? The answer is: You can’t. So apple cobbler waffle became my birthday cake and was worth every sinful bite. Of course, what’s brunch without a little champagne to start the day? My table of eight ordered the bubble service with two bottles ($25 each, including all the fixings) and had no trouble polishing them off.

Now, I can’t wait to go back for a third time -- it’s a charm after all, am I right? -- because I have so much eating left to do; to start, the shrimp and grits, Skillet No Skillet (fried green tomato, artichoke pepper hash, lamb sausage and ranch Hollandaise over two sunny eggs), BLD Burger…

        Arnolds Country Kitchen

        American Restaurants

        2209 Abbott Martin RdNashville, TN

Dec. 14, 2015 - Looking for a way to impress family over the holidays? Or maybe you want to give a visiting friend a (literal) taste of what this city's all about? Well then, you simply need to take them to Arnold's, which, as of today, now has two locations in Nashville.

It's an anomaly that has managed to capture the hearts of both tourists and locals. How? By making some mighty fine food on the regular and not trying to overdo it. (Case in point: Arnold's is only open on weekdays during lunch hours.)

For 23 years, this classic, iconic meat-and-three joint has been keeping the locals fed -- very well fed. The kitchen staff doesn't try to do anything fancy, they just know how to make everything good: mac and cheese, shrimp and grits, roast beef, brisket, biscuits and gravy, black-eyed peas, collard greens, you name it. If it's Southern, Arnold's has it. Just be sure to save room for pie (chess, if they have it that day). The process is not unlike lunchtime at your elementary school cafeteria: You wait in the (often long) line, take a tray, choose your meat and sides, then pay at the end.

Arrive as soon as the door opens to avoid insane lines; there are no reservations, and seating is both limited and first-come, first-served (though plans are underway to double the size of the original 8th Avenue location, which will close temporarily beginning in March). The new Green Hills outpost has all the same offerings as the first, but one major added bonus: table service.

        12 South Taproom and Grill

        Bar & Grills

        2318 12th Ave SNashville, TN

Dec. 3, 2015 - 12South is almost unrecognizable with the amount of development going on along its main corridor (see: Draper James, Bartaco, the Sprinkles ATM, and countless other new businesses). But there are a few things that haven't changed, such as that local favorite, 12 South Taproom and all its delicious pub grub (the chicken burrito and steak quesadillas are two personal favorites).

When the patio is open, those in the neighborhood flock to the picnic tables -- particularly dog owners who love to bring Fido along. When it's too chilly to sit outside, everyone crams inside the cozy interior lined with both booths and bar seating. But the Taproom, as it's called by regulars, is known first and foremost for its beer offerings. It's got more than two dozen beers on tap -- many from the region, others from further away like the Pacific Northwest -- as well as bombers (just $7 on Wednesday nights) and another 100 or so in cans and bottles. For true brew lovers, there's nothing better than the Taproom's periodic tap takeovers (announced via their Facebook page) by top-notch brewers such as Memphis' Wiseacre Brewing and Bell's Brewery out of Kalamazoo, Mich.

        SPEAKeasy Spirits

        Distillers

        900 44th Ave NNashville, TN 37209

Nov. 25, 2015 - Despite its reputation of being "a drinking town with a music problem," Nashville actually doesn't have too many distilleries. Our northern neighbor, Kentucky, often steals much of our whiskey/bourbon thunder. Which is precisely why the 2012 opening of SPEAKeasy Spirits in Sylvan Park was so widely celebrated by our city full of boozehounds. The Whisper Creek Tennessee Sipping Cream was the initial slam dunk of a product, Nashville's own answer to Bailey's -- only locally made and even more delicious -- and a great addition to coffee or hot chocolate (also delicious served alone over ice).

Since the distillery's opening, SPEAKeasy founders Jeff and Jenny Pennington have been cranking out new products with the seasons, it seems. Last year, it was Pennington's Rye Whiskey, earlier this summer it was Pickers Vodka (gluten-free and made with non-GMO corn), and now it's Whisper Creek Mocha, just in time for the holidays.

While the distillery is closed for tours through 2016, its products are featured in bars and liquor stores all over town (anywhere that Best Brands has a presence), so I advise you stock up on that new mocha for all your holiday cocktail needs.

        Coffee & Tea

        1817 21st Ave SNashville, TN

Nov. 23, 2015 - Nashville is experiencing a boom in construction sites, just as the Hillsboro Village development is seeing a second coming. At last, there's somewhere to go, grab a coffee, and settle in for a bit when the line at Fido is unmanageable. A mini-franchise with five locations across the South, Revelator opened this fall with a dedication to agricultural products and seasonality.

The service is super friendly and warm -- no pretentious baristas here -- and the aesthetics are gorgeous and inviting. White space and décor fills the room, and colorful flowers punctuate each table. The coffee menu is very back-to-the-basics, and everyday there's an assortment of fresh baked goods, from muffins to scones. The only drawback of Revelator is no WiFi yet, but you can usually borrow a signal from the public wireless next door.

Bonus: On warmer days, you can pop over next door for a Jeni's ice cream chaser after you've had a java.

        1120 4th Ave N Ste 101Nashville, TN 37208

Nov. 13, 2015 - The wildly popular New Orleans butcher of the same name delighted Nashville diners by debuting a spot in Germantown at the end of the summer. Cochon Butcher boasts a butcher shop, a sandwich counter, wine bar, and plenty of outside patio space for those warmer days. The menu, which is very similar to the NOLA location's, runs the gamut of BBQ (North Carolina style) - a Cuban and a pork belly sandwich. Among those dishes, Nashville has figured out one particular thing just a month into Cochon's arrival: You can't go there for a meal and not order a side of that creamy, dreamy mac n'cheese. Other sides include jambalaya, pimento cheese, collards, deviled eggs, and Brussels sprouts. All meats and sausages are made in-house, and there's a full bar with a drinks list of curated cocktails, like the Rocketman (Small's American Dry Gin, Maraschino liqueur, lime juice, and strawberry-infused Suzy B Dirty Blonde Ale).

        The Urban Juicer

        Juices

        2206 8th Ave SNashville, TN 37204

Nov. 6, 2015 - Do you sense a theme? I definitely went through a two-month, gluten-free cleanse (and feel better for it). As such, I go to this 8th Avenue juice bar twice a day to fill up on nutrient-packed meals, like the Liquid Lunch (bananas, peanut butter, aloe vera, and almond milk) or a quinoa bowl.

But to be fair, I've been going to Urban Juicer since well before I went Paleo. In all honesty, it can be hard to cram all the necessary fruits and vegetables into a busy day, so it's long been my routine to swing by the juice bar en route to work and take a green juice to-go (the Well Being -- cucumber, spinach, kale, apple, ginger, and lemon -- is my go-to choice).

And even more exciting news: Urban Juicer just opened its second location, an East Nashville outpost on Gallatin Pike, so those on the other side of the bridge can also enjoy the fruits of its labor (get it?).

        AVO

        Vegan Restaurants

        3001 Charlotte AveNashville, TN 37209

Oct. 14, 2015 - Finally, the city that likes to batter everything and throw a fried egg on top of it is taking a healthy turn, with a number of new gluten-free and/or raw restaurants like AVO.

Located in the new OneC1TY development near Centennial Park, AVO caters to those conscious of what they're putting into their bodies. Instead of cheese, you'll find cashew hempseed ricotta; in lieu of noodles, they use zucchini. Instead of heavy brunch fare on weekends, the menu is full of healthy options like AVO Toast (sprouted, raw buckwheat toast with avocado spread, chimichurri sauce, tomato, hemp, fresh herbs, sprouts) or a coconut yogurt parfait (fermented young Thai coconut yogurt made from scratch, with fresh fruit and sprouted raw granola). Even the cocktails are made mindfully: AVO's signature cocktail, the AVOcado Margarita, is made from fresh avocado, reposado, cilantro, fresh lime, agave, and house-made orange dust.

I will say that I found a few of the dishes (like the pesto noodle bowl and the pad Thai) are a bit bland in flavor -- I have long cooked Paleo at home and know that sacrificing gluten doesn't necessarily translate to a lack of taste -- but the restaurant has only been open a month or two, so I'll give them a free pass until they find their footing. Plus, it's not like the vegetarians and vegans have a lot of options in a town full of BBQ and hot chicken!

        Fifty First Kitchen & Bar

        American Restaurants

        5104 Illinois AveNashville, TN

Oct. 5, 2015 - Nashville is starting to expand westward -- at least businesses are starting to find homes there. People have always resided in this corridor along I-40, and the debut of Fifty First Kitchen and Bar this summer brought plenty of newbies who maybe hadn't explored this up-and-coming nabe just yet.

In fact, it didn't take a week after opening in The Nations district when the renovated Victorian cottage-turned-restaurant was already packed with locals who were craving a neighborhood hang with soul. Husband-and-wife duo Tony and Caroline Galzin, and managing partner Christy Thurman, were all alums of other successful Nashville restaurant ventures, so it's no surprise really that they hit it out of the park with their rustic Italian concept. Tony heads up the kitchen team as executive chef and sources everything locally. The meat, for example, comes from Porter Road Butcher, while the cheese comes from the Bloomy Rind. Galzin cures the meat, and any dinner at Fifty First must start with a charcuterie spread.

Most everything else also comes in sharable portions, except for a couple dishes (like the PRB steak or whole roasted snapper) that hang out toward the bottom of the menu. Prices are reasonable, and the dimly-lit atmosphere makes this both a fun date spot (though the volume increased significantly as the evening progressed) or an outing for a small group. Because of the intimate size of the restaurant, reservations are recommended, though there's almost always a seat open at the bar.

I was on a gluten-free kick (Whole30 if we're being specific) while dining at Fifty First and, thus, was so pleased to find that nearly everything on the menu was compliant or could be adapted to fit (other than the pastas, which looked mouthwatering and have been getting rave reviews). You better believe I'll be going back soon, too, as the Olive and Sinclair Chocolate Bombe is a mainstay on the dessert menu, and I have yet to find an O&S dessert (especially one with bourbon-soaked cherries, cocoa nibs, mascarpone and salted caramel) I didn't devour and then want seconds.

        Las Paletas Gourmet Popsicles

Ice Cream Mixes & Other Frozen Mixes

        2911 12th Ave SNashville, TN 37204

Sept. 16, 2015 - If an avocado Popsicle sounds crazy to you, then you've clearly never met Las Paletas and their wide -- and sometimes unexpected -- offerings. Though the dog days of summer are nearly over, that's not going to curb my craving for all things sweet and cool; after all, it's the South, and the heat isn't going to subside anytime soon! And while I tend to gravitate toward Jeni's, lately Las Paletas' gourmet creations made by a pair of Mexican sisters have been calling my name.

While I am indeed allergic to avocado (I know, I know, feel free to feel sorry for me), I have no aversion to spicy or chocolate (I'm only human), which is why the Mexican hot chocolate pop often gets my order. Pops come in two different kinds: cream or fruit, in a variety of flavors, from pineapple basil to hibiscus, which change seasonally. If you find yourself in Hillsboro Village, you can also pick up a Las Paletas treat at Hot & Cold. They're also sold at various other locations around town.

        1918 W End AveNashville, TN

Sept. 2, 2015 - With more than a dozen breweries claiming Middle Tennessee as their base, it can be easy to forget the old guys, the ones like Blackstone who've been brewing up quality booze since long before "craft brewed" was even a thing.

And though it's been open since 1994, I hadn't been to Blackstone in years -- since long before I was a beer drinker -- until a friend booked out the back half of the joint, which doubles as a restaurant, for her recent rehearsal dinner. (Side note: I have cool friends.) Though make no mistake, I drink plenty of its beer from home; in fact, my favorite of Blackstone's products -- the English porter -- was recently named one of the best beers in America by Men's Journal. (Side note: I have good taste in beer, apparently.)

Don't discount the food either, as the brewpub serves up a solid menu of contemporary American and classic Southern dishes, from red snapper, to chipotle BBQ pork tenderloin. Just make sure whatever you choose, it comes with the gouda grits or else you'll get major order envy from your dining companions who chose more wisely!

        Restaurants

        611 Wedgewood AveNashville, TN

July 13, 2015 - I can't decide what I like best about Smokin Thighs: the daily happy hour from 2-8 pm (two-for-ones every day!), the drool-worthy sides (bacon mac and cheese, please ... and make it a double), or the hearty selection of moonshines (more than 100 kinds).

Owner Matt Carney knew he had a good thing when his food truck broke away from the pack after its December 2012 debut; it wasn't long before he was contemplating a full-on brick and mortar as the next step. In 2014, his team started the arduous, six-month task of renovating the old original Judge Bean's BBQ location and many months later opened the 80-seat smoked kitchen restaurant and craft beer bar in the Wedgewood-Houston area.

On the food side, you pick your chicken -- thighs in a pile is a popular option -- then flavor it with your choice of rub, sauce or season. Pick your sides; just make sure they includ loaded baked potato salad or you'll get serious FOMO looking at the tables around you. On top of the great selection of microbrews, the drinks list features high-gravity beer and a number of fancy-schmancy moonshine cocktails.

        Bar & Grills

        101 BroadwayNashville, TN

June 19, 2015 - When local restaurateur Tom Morales snagged the coveted corner space on 1st and Broadway, he hit a gold mine. With 22,000 square feet of space and an incomparable view of both Honky Tonk Row and the riverfront, there’s nary a better view in town.

But Morales was very smart in planning out the four-story concept. The ground floor not only has a shop full of regional artisan goods, but also houses a tried-and-true honky tonk with a walk-up counter to order Southern staples like a hot chicken sandwich. (Tip: Can't find an open table? Snag a seat at the bar instead.) The second floor has a more lounge-y atmosphere with couches and tables galore -- and plenty of TVs on which to watch the big game. The third floor is a private event space, which often hosts celebrity events and other live music (and the occasional party that’s open to the general public).

But it's the rooftop to which I always gravitate. Because those views paired with a whiskey ginger on a breezy summer night? Simply unbeatable. As a local, the chaos of Broadway and its frenetic energy overwhelms me. And don’t get me wrong, Acme is always packed -- but it's also the one thing that keeps me heading downtown time and time again.

June 8, 2015 - When a new coffee shop opens in Nashville, the masses don't walk, they run there -- like very energetic moths drawn to a bright flame. In a city full of creative freelancers, this is to be expected, but I'll admit that I'm also equally guilty of flocking to a trendy new café that will let me come set up shop for the afternoon.

So I was stoked to here about Steadfast, a spot that debuted last month in Germantown, right across from the Werthan Lofts. The aesthetic is gorgeous: an open coffee bar in the center of the room, surrounded by booths and walls lined with white subway tiles. There's a very large outdoor seating area and a lower level of picnic-style tables scattered among an urban garden. The coffee was divine, which is to be expected, as Steadfast was started by a couple of alums from Crema, which will forever be my favorite café in town. The breakfast options were quite good, too, ranging from a healthy bowl of granola and fresh fruit to egg sandwiches and dishes of all kinds. I didn't try the baked goods, but they taunted me from below the register (I'm sure I'll be back soon to taste my way through them, as well).

My only big qualm was the price: I had a bit of sticker shock when my granola and iced coffee totaled $15 (including 15 percent tip). But hey, in an increasingly expensive city where hipster coffee bars are all the rage, I guess this is the new norm?

June 1, 2015 - There is only one way to describe what it's like to experience the Catbird Seat for the first time: mind-blowing. It took me three years to finally nab a coveted reservation -- spots only open up 30 days in advance and are limited to 20 or so diners, two seatings a night, four nights a week -- but it was worth every amount of effort and hard-earned pennies spent.

For two hours, my husband and I celebrated our anniversary on the second floor of a no-frills building, seated around a U-shaped bar that overlooked the kitchen, while a team of culinary wizards led by maestro Trevor Moran prepared 10 courses of pure magic. I was glad I had been pre-warned that much of the dinner is consumed with your hands (I made sure to wash up extra good). Begonias were used to pick up beef tartare. Leafy greens concealed ice cream. Bubbles of St. Germain perched atop strawberry shortcake. The whole evening was a journey through flavor profiles, and one I would happily do again on the next special occasion. Was it worth the $200 a person (including pairings)? Absolutely.

Watermark is one prime example. Though it’s quickly being surrounded by high-rises cropping up on a regular basis, this white-tablecloth fine dining spot in the heart of the Gulch has managed to keep things exciting with the return of its old executive chef and a steady dedication to classic dishes utilizing regionally sourced ingredients.

Not to mention, it boasts one of the best rooftop patios in town. On a balmy summer night, there's simply no place better to do dinner al fresco.

        Josephine

        American Restaurants

        2316 12th Ave SNashville, TN

May 5, 2015 - Since it opened in December 2013, Josephine has become one of 12South's biggest hot spots. Now, it's back to raise the bar with the X|X: Josephine experience, a 10-course knockout of a meal with pairings that's done to the nines.

Each Friday and Saturday night at 8pm on the dot, Josephine is setting the community table for 10 lucky diners, who will settle in for the long haul (i.e., up to three hours of feasting and fellowship). Lucky for me, I got to be one of the taste-testers of the inaugural meal and eat my way through Chef Andy Little's mouthwatering creations. Many of the dishes arrived on a long 2-by-10 wooden board that Chef and his staff carried out to the table, and each one was artfully presented, following a theme (e.g., snacks, asparagus, spring, pretzel, morel mushroom, scallop, pork belly).

Pairings ran the gamut from a glass of Prosecco to a tasting of Yazoo's Gerst to accompany the pretzel. The best part, in my mind, though, was the not one, not two, but three dessert courses that concluded the indulgent meal. First up, there was a goat milk treat, followed by pastry chef Kayla May's take on the famous Nashville candy, the Goo Goo Cluster, and then finally, some handmade candies we could all take with us since we were too full to even move by course 10.

The cost of the X|X: Josephine meal is $85 with an optional $35 for beverage pairings, a steal for as much food and drink as that gets you. Reservations must be made by calling the restaurant at 615-292-7766, and guests can reserve the entire table if they like. Better yet, the menu is set to change every week, so you can become a frequent diner at Josephine's community table and never repeat the same meal.

        The Post East

        Coffee Shops

        1701 Fatherland StNashville, TN

April 23, 2015 - In the past decade, East Nashville's reputation as hipster central has forced many of us to abandon our posts at our beloved coffee shops where the barista knows our orders by name (Half an hour wait for a latte? No thanks!) and find new local spots to claim as our own. Which is why the discovery of hidden gems like the Post East, tucked away on Fatherland Street cattycorner to Oliver and Sinclair, has become vital for creative entrepreneurs like me who consider the city's many cafes our mobile "offices."

The Post East, which opened last summer, is big, airy and full of seating -- a must for any coffee shop to eventually blossom -- and it boasts a number of fun specialty drinks, like a blueberry lavender or salt and pepper caramel latte. It also carries gluten-free treats (Coconut chocolate chip cookie? Don't mind if I do) and High Garden tea for the sensitive diners or coffee-adverse.

Wi-Fi is free and fast, and there's abundant parking (a growing headache in a city on the brink of a population explosion), and I predict once the masses find out, the Post East will become the back-up plan for those who don’t want to brave Barista Parlor's crowds -- so do me a favor, will you, and keep this little secret between us to prevent the latter from happening?

        Loveless Cafe

        American Restaurants

        8400 Highway 100Nashville, TN

April 13, 2015 - There are some places that are institutions for a reason. Loveless Café is one such restaurant that's been going strong for the better part of a century. Personally, I've been filling my belly there for more than 20 years and have yet to have a bad meal -- and my most recent dinner was no exception.

Established in 1951, this Highway 100 landmark feeds a half-million hungry diners a year, many of them trekking or biking the nearby Natchez Trace Parkway, others zooming down I-40 on a road trip, still others who are Nashville area natives that simply love a dose of nostalgia. I fall into that latter category.

Traditionally, I'm more of a breakfast aficionado than I am one to get excited about dinner, and usually I take my out-of-town guests to Loveless mid-week for a late brunch as means to bypass the crowds (and Lord have mercy, there's always a crowd). On my most recent visit, however, I gathered with a group of friends for a Monday dinner and feel like I've been missing out all these years by being a Loveless bruncher and, consequently, not ordering the pulled pork (it's that good -- and I eat a lot of pulled pork). Another reason to opt for a Loveless dinner instead of breakfast? Pie. Lots and lots of delicious pie. (And you can still justify the platter of biscuits, too, as breakfast or not, there's no occasion in the South when a biscuit is not appropriate.)

You can also take home a slice of the café from Loveless' Hams & Jams Country Market across the way, which features a number of non-perishables, homemade preserves, and fresh pork products like the jalapeño bacon. There's also a plethora of fun branded merchandise and other Tennessee staples, such as Goo Goo Clusters. You'll want it all, trust me. So take heed and pay off your credit card in advance.

        2706 12th Ave SNashville, TN

April 2, 2015 - There's no shortage of barbeque joints in Nashville. Some will tell you Martin’s reigns supreme; others are loyal to Peg Leg Porker; still others love that tourist favorite, Jack's. Personally, Edley's has always been my go-to spot, both for the creative sandwiches and the on-par sides.

For those who like their pulled pork or brisket a wee bit spicy, the Tuck sandwich -- with Pimento cheese and a fried egg (because this is the South after all) -- won’t disappoint, though the rack of ribs is always a safe bet. Just be sure and load up your tray with mac-and-cheese, collard greens, baked beans, and all the other goodness that Edley's serves up on the regular -- including the bushwhacker, Nashville's signature drink which can best be described as "a (very) boozy Frosty" and enjoyed outside on the spacious patio, perfect for those balmy spring nights that we have been waiting to arrive all winter long.

        1222 4th Ave NNashville, TN

March 18, 2015 - If ever I have out-of-town friends in who are staying through a Monday, there's no question where you'll find us on Sunday: at City House every time. The Germantown anchor helmed by Chef Tandy Wilson has been serving up inventive cuisine since it debuted in 2007, and it's received no shortage of attention and awards, including a James Beard nomination every year since opening. But my reasons for being a frequent fixture at City House a single day of the week are for one reason and one reason alone: the Sunday Supper.

While City House's menu pretty much stays the same every day of the week, the Sunday Supper menu is always different. You’d be wise to order a smattering of small, shareable plates -- this week, my friend and I shared the crispy grits cake and the ham biscuit with peach preserves -- and the restaurant specializes in thin crust artisan pizzas, so save room for one of those as well. On tap for the evening was the cauliflower and sausage specialty pie with a spicy kick. The server asked if we'd also like a fried egg on top; Southerners are all about putting eggs on anything, so obviously we agreed to it. (Verdict: excellent idea.)

And what’s supper without dessert at the end? While I usually am drawn to anything chocolate or crème brulee, my friend wanted the sesame cookie sandwich with honey gelato, and we did not regret that decision for a second.

        Thistle Farms Café

        Coffee Shops

        5128 Charlotte PikeNashville, TN

March 11, 2015 - I work downtown, I live on Music Row -- I rarely venture out to Charlotte Pike. Or rather, I should say, I rarely ventured out to Charlotte in the past -- until now.

After a meeting in West Nashville was rescheduled, I found myself driving down Charlotte looking for a place to set up camp for the day. I had heard about Thistle Stop Café, part of the social enterprise Thistle Farms that helps women who have survived addiction, prostitution, and sex trafficking. And when I saw I was just three blocks from it, I knew I had to take this chance to try the place out.

I found Thistle Stop Café absolutely packed -- always a good sign for any coffee shop -- and settled in with a latte (the popular Almond Joy) and a breakfast sandwich (the BLT Breagal). Both were delicious, and I was immediately enchanted by the rustic yet cozy ambiance the café exuded; reclaimed barnwood lined the walls, and chandeliers made from tea cups dangled above the tables. There was a stage up front for live music. At the counter, several of my favorite local brands like Olive & Sinclair and Haulin’ Oats were available for purchase.

Not only is it fulfilling to know that my money is helping support a good cause, but Thistle Stop Café is just plain good, period, no matter how you look at it. I can’t wait to go back and eat my way through the lunch menu, as well -- not to mention the afternoon tea service, yum.

        Sushi Bars

Feb. 18, 2015 - When you work in midtown, you quickly tire of the few non-chains open for midday meals. Thankfully, Nama's arrival to Elliston filled a hole in the business lunch void plaguing these parts of town.

Nashville may be far from any major body of water, but I'd venture to say this sushi spot is worthy of both bigger cities and port towns. Since I lived in Knoxville, home to the original two locations, a decade ago, I've been a fan of the fresh fare and creative rolls -- like the soy joy, with spicy tuna, seared albacore, cucumber and tempura crunchies, wrapped in soy paper topped with fantasy sauce, eel sauce, wasabi aioli and scallion -- that pack a punch and offer an explosion of flavor. And you just can't beat $10 for a full lunch, which includes a seaweed salad, edamame and roll of your choice.

With its massive, bi-level space and convenient location, I'm sure Nama is an equally viable option for dinner and happy hour, as well. Mondays and Thursdays also feature special half-price deal. For now, though, it's become my go-to spot for client lunches. See you there?

        Saint Anejo

        Mexican Restaurants

        1120 Mcgavock StNashville, TN

Feb. 4, 2015 - Ever since I started working on Broadway, just around the corner from Saint Añejo, I’ve been a regular fixture at two-for-one Wednesdays. (And with a pair of ginger-rosemary margaritas for just $10, how could I not?) I was pleased to find that Saint Añejo’s brunch offered the same sweet deal on libations -- in fact, you can try two different drinks out (as long as the second is of equal or lesser value to the first) or even save your token for another day (though if you can’t down two cocktails at brunch, you’re no dining companion of mine!).

I started with the Blood Orange Mimosa, while my husband went straight for the Wicked Bloody Maria, a salad in a glass (albeit a strong one). While I was immediately drawn to the chilaquiles, I then saw the top three most popular items on the menu -- hot chicken and waffles, Horchata French toast, Mexican hot chocolate waffles -- and decided we would be having all of the above.

While I’m an eternal sweet lover (and not a huge fan of fried foods), I was surprised to find that the hot chicken and waffles were my favorite. A dash of spicy, a tinge of sweet with a cream cheese drizzle finish, it was the perfect combination of flavors. The chef, Jason Slimak, later told me he liked to mix sweet with spice to make diners come back for one more bite, time and time again. He certainly managed to have that effect on me.

And for that second drink? I had the Red Sangria, which was sweeter than most -- in a good way -- while Scott opted for the Pomelo Sparkle.

Verdict? Well, I’m already planning my second brunch trip back so I can continue to drink -- and eat -- my way right on down that menu, if that tells you anything at all.

Jan. 20, 2015 - For a city that loves its meat, steakhouses are few and far between in Nashville, which is why the 2014 opening of Union Common was a welcome addition to Midtown. Small plates, like the Brussels sprouts with pork belly, Parmesan, pine nuts and sorghum, are meant to be shared and consumed as a complement to the main attractions, such as a dried aged rib-eye or roasted pork chop with almond slaw and curried applesauce.

Hit it up during happy hour (Monday through Thursday from 5 to 7pm), and you’ll enjoy signature cocktails, wines by the glass, and small plates for half price.

While it serves dinner Tuesday through Thursday and food all day on weekends -- charcuterie platters, oysters and other shareable plates are popular orders -- Urban Grub seems to be a big drinking spot, particularly among the 20-something set who love nothing more than to cozy up to the fireplaces with a Moscow Mule or Dark & Stormy.

        Thai Restaurants

        907 12th Ave SNashville, TN

Dec. 29, 2015 - Traditionally, Nashville has not been known for its international cuisine, (unless "international" means "Southern comfort food" like BBQ and hot chicken, in which case we've got that down pat) which made last year's arrival of Thai Esane an even bigger deal than it already was. And it immediately garnered a following, not just locally but around the country, landing on lists like Conde Nast Traveler's "The Best New Restaurants in the South."

You wouldn't stumble upon Thai Esane unless you were intentionally seeking it out, though, as it's tucked away off of 12th Avenue South, just past the Gulch in an unassuming, almost unattractive building. But make the trek and you'll find a pleasant interior with great service and even better food. Owner Nina Sayasack's family is behind the popular King Market café and grocery in Antioch so she already had a built-in following of fans of her Laotian and Thai fare. While there's an extensive menu of curry -- I'm constantly drawn to the Massaman myself -- the chicken lemongrass skewers, Drunken Noodles, papaya salad Thai style, and the Tiger Tear Beef Salad are all fan favorites and should be at the top of your to-order list.

Thai Esane also does takeout and delivery, so if you're looking to eat at home in your pajamas in front of the fire this holiday season, now you've got dinner taken care of, too. (You're welcome.)

Dec. 17, 2015 - How better to celebrate the sweet return of the holidays than with the grand opening of Sprinkles Cupcakes? Satiating sweets lovers since opening its Beverly Hills flagship in 2005, the cupcake emporium has nearly 20 locations across the country and internationally. Now Nashville will get its first taste of the frosted goodness on Dec. 17 with the debut of the 12South store.

In addition to the iconic cupcake ATM, there will be an actual storefront -- with a hand-painted mural of the Red Velvet favorite -- serving cupcakes, cookies like the cult-favorite Salted Oatmeal Cornflake, and ice cream (can I combine them all for an ice cream cupcake cookie sandwich, please?). There will also be a seasonal menu of festive flavors like chocolate peppermint for Christmas, key lime in the summer, and caramel apple during Halloween. Specialty flavors like strawberry, banana, and Chai latte are also offered on a rotating basis throughout the week.

Do you think Sprinkles offers a black card for its regular customers? If so, I'd better renew my gym membership now!

Dec. 10 2015 - The only real thing you need to know about Paradise Park is this: TOTS. Lots and lots of sinfully delicious tater tots. That's why so many people head to this trailer park-themed dive right in the heart of Broadway. It's got an all-night menu that serves up greasy goodness in the form of burgers, corn dogs, chili cheese dogs, and a bevy of high-calorie sides. This is not the place you go if you're on a diet.

Beyond that, the astro-turfed bar on Lower Broad offers a rock alternative to the country-infused honky-tonks that surround it. While there is live music nightly -- and that ever-present Nashville-favorite "Wagon Wheel" regularly rings out through the doors of Paradise Park, just like it does every one of its neighbors -- you'll find a variety of tunes, including plenty of hair band favorites. Basically it's like every good fraternity party you've ever attended (and yes, there are a fair amount of college-aged patrons that frequent it, too).

        1922 Adelicia StNashville, TN

Nov. 24, 2015 - The golden Goldberg brothers -- founders of Strategic Hospitality who lay claim to such Nashville staples as Pinewood Social and Catbird Seat -- nailed it again with their new French concept, Le Sel, that debuted last month in the formerly cursed space of the Music City Tippler at the base of the high-rise Adelicia.

The Goldbergs brought in renowned Chicago Chef Rene De Leon (alum of both Alinea and Next) to sit at the helm of the kitchen. I recently cozied up in a booth with three gal pals, and though none of us are vegetarians, we were so drawn to shareable plates like the ratatouille, truffle fries, and buttercup squash that we found ourselves with a meatless feast that was both filling and delicious. This just gave us more excuse to order a couple desserts, with the chocolate crémeux being our collective favorite. For seafood lovers, there's a raw bar with an assortment of oysters, lobster, and other shellfish on tap.

Each space of the multi-level restaurant and bar is beautifully appointed with playful tones and bold splashes of art, like cushy pink velvet booths, and the private red room at the top of the staircase, where a local artist adorned the walls with his girlfriend's name over and over again. Reservations are definitely recommended, though there's a swanky bar in the back with its own entrance and small-bites menu if you forget to call ahead. Le Sel also serves weekday lunch and weekend brunch. And you never know what Music City royalty you might dine alongside at Le Sel; Charles Kelley, Dierks Bentley, and Ryan Adams were all at the table over the night my girlfriends and I holed up for our leisurely, three-hour dinner.

Nov. 17, 2015 - The crisp, mild weekends of fall are the perfect excuse for a little road trip, and there's nowhere more charming to go than Bell Buckle, a whistle-stop town of just 500 residents not more than an hour south of Nashville. Drive through rolling horse farms -- nearby Shelbyville is home of the internationally celebrated Tennessee Walking Horse championships -- to the town that's home to both RC Cola and MoonPies (it even has a festival each June honoring the sugary creations that's attended by tens of thousands).

But why you're really there is for the café. Formerly notable music studio Bell Buckle Records, where some of the great country music artists got their starts, Bell Buckle Café is decked out in music memorabilia: vinyl, slipcovers, autographed glossies, and other related bric-a-brac wallpaper the interior. Every Friday and Saturday evening, the cafe offers live music with no admission charge, and Thursday is songwriters' night.

The food is classic Southern fare -- everything fried, battered, and smothered in butter. Only go on an empty stomach so you can eat your way through the menu, starting with the fried biscuits dipped in applesauce and finishing with a decadent MoonPie sundae (you won't be sorry). To walk off all those calories, spend an hour or two after lunch poking around the quaint antiques stores that line the cutesy "downtown."

Nov. 11, 2015 - "The Wash," as locals call it, is a beloved East Nashville institution. After the 13-year-old Greenwood Avenue location moved to a larger (by nearly four times!), upgraded space right along the convenient corridor of Main Street, The Family Wash got a serious makeover. But despite its fancy new digs, it's still got the same feel of the Wash of old: American flag adorning the stage, plenty of local artwork, lots of strings of Christmas lights, and that iconic Fish Bowl.

With a full menu served from 7am till midnight, Monday through Saturday, The Family Wash promises something for everybody: Shepherd's Pie, Meatballs 'n Buccatini, Crispy Catfish Sandwich, Hot Beer Cheese, grilled cheese and tomato soup. Breakfast is served all day, every day; fried green biscuit sandwich? We'll take seconds! Executive Chef John Stephenson, one of the quartet of Nashville native owners, brings that creativity in the kitchen that made his food at Fido Café so popular, and fans of his burgers can take comfort in knowing: The Family Wash Burger is every bit as good as any other in town -- if not better.

Garage Coffee Company, which still maintains a location in Marathon Village, combines forces with the Wash for the new locale, so those in need of a caffeine surge can order specialty drinks like an Orange Mocha or a Cortado. You'll need that shot of energy, too, to stick around all evening long, as the Wash has live music six nights a week -- not to mention a very extensive drinks menu, including both cocktails and wine on tap.

All that's to say is, we can't wait to go back.

Nov. 5, 2015 - I had high hopes for A Matter of Taste (aka AMOT), one of the first exclusively gluten-free restaurants to arrive in Nashville that uses fresh, local, in-season produce. It took me a while to find an adventurous dining companion. When I finally found one, I happened to be doing the  Whole30 detox, which seemed like the perfect timing to try this place.

What I love about the menu is that it has plenty of delicious-sounding dishes like butternut squash and ginger bisque, or the grilled filet mignon in a red wine Bordelaise topped with bleu cheese, bacon, crispy onions, and served with mushroom risotto, or garlic mashed potatoes and Swiss chard. If you're eating that kind of feast, who needs gluten?

Alas, while most everything on the menu is Paleo diet, it was not in fact Whole30 compliant (which is a bit stricter with no sugars whatsoever). There were salads I could adapt -- but that was about it -- and even then the kitchen got my order wrong twice; They added cheese the first time and dressing the second. I will say that, snafus aside, the service was friendly and the space was pleasing, and I would definitely give AMOT a second chance to win me over. If you're looking for a healthy option in East Nashville and are not on such a restrictive plan as I am, you'll probably enjoy it just fine.

Hey, a girl's gotta splurge every once in a while, right? (If you're me, "every once in a while" seems to occur weekly.)

To be honest, the burgers are modest size -- a good size that will fill you up and not have you rolling out of the place -- which I'd like to think balanced out for the fact that I had mac n' cheese and chips on my burger. I also ordered sweet potato fries, but who's calorie-counting? And, fine, four beers, too, but Jack Brown's has so many types to sample (like, literally, close to a hundred) -- and if requested, they even keep a beer list for guests so you can know what you've tried in the past and what you haven't -- that you can't really blame me, plus they rotate daily. The oatmeal chocolate stout I had for "dessert" was to die for.

I can say that I'll definitely be back here in the future, as the price is right (no overpriced boutique burgers here), the atmosphere is casual (no one bothered us, other than to ask if we needed refills, while we sat there and gabbed for four hours), and there's valet parking (a necessity in this city, particularly as there aren't street spots around these parts). The only thing I didn't love about Jack Brown's was the fly situation -- we sat out on the patio and were swarmed for hours. Once it was dusk they subsided but I'd rather dine without pests!

        The Stillery

        Bar & Grills

        113 2nd Ave NNashville, TN

Sept. 21, 2015 - It turns out 2nd Avenue isn't just full of tourist traps anymore. Since The Stillery opened earlier this year in the old Pirahna's Bar & Grill location, I've visited three times, even though Honky Tonk Row is not a place I tend to frequent (like, ever).

Why? Well, the Stillery is locally owned, for one, which always gets my vote if given the option between that and a franchise. It's multiple levels, so you can sneak upstairs when the main level is crowded and often have breathing room. The cocktails are on point; I highly recommend the Cor-Basil (Corsair gin, basil, simple syrup, lime, soda) or the Dreamsicle, which tastes like just that and is made with moonshine. And the kitchen whips up a variety of delicious Southern fare from hot chicken pizza to sriracha deviled eggs to a bevy of "two-handed sandwiches." What's not to love? It's the perfect place to fuel up before -- or unwind after -- a show at the Ryman or Bridgestone while not being suffocated by the tourist crowds (at least on weeknights). Just be sure and discover this fun spot before the masses do.

        Sandwich Shops

        2905 12th Ave SNashville, TN 37204

Sept. 11, 2015 - Located in the heart of 12South, Sloco is a hybrid of slow-food and fast casual sandwiches. With all of their offerings seasonal -- no lettuce in December nor tomatoes in February -- and every single item handmade or locally sourced, this drop-in joint is a must try for folks that dearly love a hogie but can't stand the thought of unsustainability. There isn't a thing on the menu that isn't good, but favorite dishes include the pesto chicken with goat cheese or the Redneck Reuben, which comes with house-made dijon, corned pork shoulder and slaw.

Owner Jeremy Barlow has dubbed the adjoining space in the room next to the order counter "The Meet Room," and intends for neighborhood locals to use it as a chill taproom/space, which is why he's expanded the sandwich shop's offerings to include beer and wine. Sloco also has a second location in the Nashville Farmers' Market that's always bustling during lunch hours.

        Rosepepper

        Mexican Restaurants

        1907 Eastland AveNashville, TN

Aug. 3, 2015 - If you want to know where all the hipsters in Nashville eat when the Mexican craving strikes? Well, then look no further than Rosepepper. With a pretty spacious patio -- no dogs allowed, unfortunately; we tried -- and a locale right off of Gallatin, it's never not bustling, as we found out when there was more than an hour wait for outdoor seating. At 8 pm. On a Wednesday. (In my sundress and wedges, no tattoos, bespoke beard, or body piercings in sight, I definitely felt a little too preppy to fit in seamlessly at Rosepepper.)

Instead, we took the first available and were seated 10 minutes later in a dark corner. We'd been outside for hours, so ordered drinks immediately. The chips and salsa came out pretty quickly, but the water ran dry. We asked again (seriously, since when do you have to request water at a Mexican joint?). Our pitcher of Tecate arrived but the water didn't come out until right before the food, some half an hour later. Let's just say, while the service wasn't necessarily rude, it did leave something to be desired.

Still, service issues aside, the food is pretty reliable, and Rosepepper was one of the pioneers of this now bustling Eastland corridor, which is perhaps why it has such a loyal following. In reality, though, the food is just glorified dive Mexican (in other words, don't expect to pay less than $12 for a heaping plate of rice, beans, enchiladas, or whatever your main course wish may be). Would I go back? Maybe. But it's hard to think of a time I'd actively choose Rosepepper when Silly Goose and Wild Cow are directly across the street, beckoning with their organic, health food goodness.

        Barlines Downtown Nashville

        Sports Bars

        250 5th Ave SNashville, TN

July 21, 2015 - When Omni Nashville opened two years ago, I was excited for many reasons:

        1. The city needed another luxury hotel downtown - badly.

        2. The local artwork throughout the hotel is both fun and fits in with the city's underlying musical theme.

        3. In keeping with that theme, the hotel also connects to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Hatch Show Print.

        4. The pool and some of the upper-floor rooms have the best city skyline views around. 5. the hotel's restaurants and bars filled a much-needed void in SoBro.

One such watering hole is Barlines, an authentic honky tonk that serves up some fine grub to boot. And currently that very restaurant-bar and its very own Garrett Pittler are competing in the James Beard Foundation's Better Burger Project, which runs through July 31, and challenges chefs to create a burger blend using ground meat and chopped mushrooms in an effort to introduce a healthier, more sustainable burger. (PS - it also happens to be Nashville Burger Week July 17-24, too.)

In order for Pittler to make it to the James Beard House this fall, he must capture votes via Instagram. In other words, you need to get on down there and try out Barlines' Turkey Porta Royale (just 325 calories, too!) and help a local out. Upload your photo to Instagram with the tags ‪#‎BetterBurgerProject, ‪#‎Barlines, ‪@GarrettPittler and @omninashville, won't you? (Like you needed an excuse to eat a mouthwatering burger anyway.)

June 25, 2015 - I love me some ramen, and I will admit while Two Ten Jack's didn't blow me away the first time I ate there, the ambiance was enough to make me want to return -- if for nothing else, the stellar happy hour (Monday through Thursday, valid on a variety of wines, sake drinks, and appetizers). This izakaya (a Japanese-style pub) in East Nashville boasts a lengthy drinks list that includes a hearty selection of beer, sake, and wine. Also, they have cocktails on tap -- like the No. 2, made with silver tequila, pear liqueur, chile, lime, and agave -- and an excellent patio to boot. Need I bother to say more?

June 17, 2015 - When I have out-of-towners come visit for the first time, there's one tried-and-true local joint I never fail to take them to: Fido Café, tucked right in the heart of Hillsboro Village. There's always a line, but it moves fast (usually... though weekends are another story). The food is forever reliable. The rotating menu of specialty coffee drinks never disappoint. And it serves breakfast all day, every day. What's not to love?

While there's also beer, baked goods and plenty of lunch options on the menu, I rarely deviate from my routine, no matter the hour of day: the Local Latte, made with honey and cinnamon. Though, if there's a coffee drink with Yazoo hops on the menu when you go, don't hesitate, just order it -- and the sweet potato pancakes with pecans, powdered sugar, whipped cream, and maple syrup. If I'm feeling a wild hair -- or more accurately, I need something savory -- I'll order the huevos rancheros. But really, no matter your craving, you can't go wrong here.

June 5, 2015 - It's that time of year again when every weekend is booked with people getting married, having babies, or really finding an excuse to celebrate anything. As such, I feel like I'm constantly going to potlucks or, as often the case may be, hosting an engagement party or baby shower.

I don’t know about you but the last thing I have time to do any time of year is slave away in the kitchen, which is why Sweet 16th is such a savior for me. I love the variety of cake flavors on the menu -- one day I'll have a reason to order the Elvis (a two-layer banana cake with peanut butter cream between the layers and frosted with white cream cheese frosting), I just know it -- as well as the number of tarts and cupcakes they offer. The one thing they don't do is a lot of customization -- I asked for a message to be written out on a cake and was told no lettering or other design elements beyond sprinkles -- so know that before you call (and be sure and order at least three days out).

Sweet 16th also sells coffee and tea, as well as a number of baked goods like quiches and pastries, and on my last pick-up at the East Nashville sweet spot, I discovered that they do savory very well and wound up going home with a cold bean salad that would carry me over two meals. Double-tasking lunch and my errands? Don't mind if I do.

May 26, 2015 - Normally, I'm adverse to chains. Don't judge -- the problem with Nashville is there are so many delicious, independently owned restaurants in this city, why would I ever need to deviate off course?

But I make an exception for Taco Mamacita, which is technically a mini-chain with three locations across three different Southern cities. The Nashville outpost is located a few blocks from where I live, and it's always packed. It's got a great patio that's brimming with patrons in warmer months. It's got some of the friendliest service around and a very accommodating kitchen staff that can whip up gluten- or other allergen-free meals upon request. The bar is fully stocked, and Wednesday boasts happy hour (two-for-one margaritas), while Sundays have half-price sangria all day long. People rave about the Peruvian chicken, but I'm a girl of habit: I order the two tacos (Royale and a Korean BBQ) and a side (sweet potato fries or plantains) for a cool $10 -- and a margarita or three, but that's just a given -- every single time.

May 14, 2015 - I’m not one to vary my morning coffee routine much at all, but recently on the way home from a new gym, I took a detour via the Lipscomb University campus and wound up being so glad I did, despite the school zones and extra half mile.

Of course, I had an ulterior motive: to check out the new(ish) digs of the Well, a cutesy cafe I visited once or twice in its original location in Green Hills before it moved last year. Formed as a community gathering place with religious ties, the Well is somewhere I go not for political reasons, but because the drinks are just that good -- iced coffee with hops, orange and rose water? Don’t mind if I do.

And the drinks have fun names like The Backwood Bourbon. Want to know something even better? The non-profit coffee shop has partnered with Living Project and Blood:Water Mission to provide clean water in the nations that need it most. Mexican Restaurants

April 30, 2015 - Jonathan Waxman is back and opening his second Nashville restaurant in one year -- and within the Country Music Hall of Fame, no less. But unlike his first foray into Nashville dining, Adele's, this one is far more casual: a taqueria, in fact.

And at the helm is 22-year-old Kaelin Ulrich Trilling, a native of Oaxaca, Mexico, who arrived in Music City via Houston. Chef Kaelin comes about it honestly: His mother is a well-known cookbook author who also runs a cooking school in Mexico. Much of his menu is made the way he'd make it back in his homeland, with many special ingredients sourced from Oaxaca that you won't find at many other local joints.

All tortillas and chips are made fresh from corn that's ground daily with a special grinder. Menu items run the gamut of starters, such as the queso fundido (a can't miss item), quesadillas (try the short rib) and, of course, tacos (the carnitas with pineapple pico de gallo and salsa tomatillo are tasty). Open for three meals daily, there are even a couple of breakfast items like migas and huevos rancheros.

But the best part of all for the boozehounds among us is the open-cup policy. Not only is there a walk-up window from which to order drinks, but you can take your margarita -- or one of the many specialty cocktails like the bourbon horchata -- to go and sit on the patio or walk around the Hall of Fame, Omni, and 5th Avenue between Demonbreun and Korean Veterans Boulevard. And really, does it get any better than that?

April 21, 2015 - You could hear the delighted cries of international food lovers echo throughout Davidson and Williamson Counties when Maneet Chauhan brought her Indian-meets-Southern fare concept to Nashville last November; the celebration continued when she launched lunch service last month.

Chauhan's reputation as a celebrity chef -- and a spitfire in the kitchen -- preceded her, and meant that many Tennesseans were counting down the days to her arrival, as she's appeared on many cooking shows, like 'Chopped' as a judge. But her panache for catering to her Southern audience has been what's kept her name at the forefront of the local culinary scene.

Chauhan's lunch menu runs the gamut of thali -- the original Indian meat-and-three with a trio of sides, rice, chutney, naan, papadum and a dessert -- and a smattering of "sandwiches," like the beetroot and cauliflower croquette, a lamb mint burger or a hot chicken pakora "po boy." Just be sure and get cocktail pairings for each course -- to, you know, temper the spice, of course.

Offering a New Orleans-style neighborhood market with the convenience of a New York bodega, the Southernaire is part shop, part deli, part butcher counter. And it's owned by the same team behind the Southern Steak & Oyster, located next door, so you'll find the same great quality of food, just packaged to take with you back to the office or down to the riverfront for a picnic lunch. There's also fresh produce and a selection of craft beers on the store side of the market.

And if you're a visitor or simply looking to pick up a Nashville-themed gift for a friend or loved one, you're in luck. The Southernaire's shelves are chock full of regionally-made artisanal goods and sundries, from Colts Bolts chocolates and Goo Goo Clusters to TrueBee honey to Walker's cocktail mixers.

March 27, 2015 - Somewhere between the time that I was flitting between California and New York a decade ago, Tennessee got a top-notch vineyard -- and it was started by none other than country music sensation, Kix Brooks, who sometimes plays surprise shows for the truly lucky visitors. Well, the sun was out last weekend for the first time in who knows how long, and I finally made it out to Arrington with a group of friends. I can now say with authority there are few places better to be on a warm Saturday afternoon than Arrington: We staked claim to a couple tables, ordered a couple bottles of wine, spread out our picnic lunch we had packed and camped out for the day.

The line to order was dreadfully long -- as was the tasting line (tastings start at $6 for four wines) -- so I'd recommend getting as much as possible on every trip up to the tasting room. The winery is open seven days a week and is located half an hour south of Nashville, so make sure you have your DD booked and ready to go.

        Serving Your Area

March 16, 2015 - As the ice melts and the days (hopefully) continue to warm up, you'll likely be looking for an excuse to get outdoors, and I hope you'll give Karen-Lee Ryan a call and hop aboard one of her Walk Eat Nashville tours.

The former Tennessean food writer knows her way around Music City's culinary scene. After she and her husband moved to Texas a few years back, they eventually fell homesick for their East Nashville neighborhood and returned in early 2014. It was then that Karen-Lee saw a disconnect between the blossoming food scene and the culinary experiences on offer. So she did what any entrepreneurial-minded foodie would do: She created her own.

Since launching Walk Eat Nashville through Five Points and Lockeland Springs last fall, Karen-Lee's three-hour, six-stop walking tours have become so popular that she's looking to expand to even more neighborhoods later this spring. Each tour includes tastings and behind-the-scenes peeks at establishments new and old, such as Five Points Pizza, Edley's East, Yeast Nashville, Lynne Lorraine's Juice Bar and Chocolate F/X.

Tours take place every Thursday at 1:30pm and Friday at 11am and cost $49. Karen-Lee sells out more often than not, so I highly recommend booking a few weeks in advance. Whether you're new to town or a seasoned veteran, I guarantee you’ll discover something new about Music City and its culinary gems.

        Five Points Pizza

        Pizza

        1012 Woodland StNashville, TN

March 2, 2015 - Nashville's a BBQ town. Nashville's a hot chicken town. What Nashville is not is a pizza town. Which is what makes Five Points Pizza even more of a diamond in the rough.

Starting with the garlic knots -- don't listen to the server when she says an order of five is plenty of a party for two; you will need more -- drenched in marinara to the plain ol' cheese pie (which the owners cite as a personal favorite) all the way to the specials of the day, everything at Five Points Pizza is, well, on point. Personally, I’m always drawn to the specialties, like the crazy flavorful Hot Hawaiian (made with spicy capicola, pineapple, fresh jalapenos), though the Vodka Sauce Pie is a good option for those who want a creamier dish. Midday diners can enjoy $10-or-less lunch deals, and those with hearty appetites can go one step further and order a stromboli (essentially an oversized calzone-dough layered with mozzarella and toppings galore).

But what’s pizza without beer? The two go together like peanut butter and jelly. And Five Points Pizza has a delightful roster of craft brews, many of them local, like Jackalope, Yazoo, and Little Harpeth.

Last year, the East Nashville pizzeria, which will turn five later this year, underwent an expansion; now, those looking for a quick bite can drop by the grab-and-go window and take a slice (or several) away with them.

Feb. 11, 2015 - This former dive in the revitalized Melrose district got a makeover and a brand reboot when it reopened in the fall of 2014. (It originally opened in 1976 and hosted performances by musicians from Johnny Cash to Emmylou Harris.)

With a full menu of Southern comfort food like a grilled cheese “dunk” swimming in a pool of creamy raspberry tomato soup or a short rib dog floating in baked beans -- and an impressive roster of craft beers to boot -- the upstairs is the perfect spot for an impromptu dinner or casual drinks after work. For those looking for a fancier setting, the subterranean speakeasy-style Cellar serves up its own menu of fancy-pants cocktails. Jan. 27, 2015 - Since it debuted to national acclaim in 2012, Etch has become my go-to spot for both business lunches and meals with friends who want a taste -- literally -- of what the Nashville dining scene is all about. If a cauliflower “steak” sounds weird to you, then you’ve never tried culinary master Deb Paquette’s creative concoctions. The chef-owner -- and celebrated restaurateur -- is always whipping up inventive fare, such as an octopus and shrimp bruschetta or the flavor-packed rutabaga la plancha (tempura marinated onion with black mole sauce, pumpkin seed, Manchego cheese, poblano tomatillo crema, carrot masa sauce, caper cauliflower avocado smash).

My go-to order for lunch is the creamy Thai Chicken & Quinoa, though the seared Ahi tuna bowl, duck pastrami panini and deviled egg sandwich are close competitors. The happy hour is a must, too, with discounted drinks and appetizers from 4 to 6:30pm on weekdays (I recommend the pork belly and -- what else? -- the popular roasted cauliflower with truffled pea pesto, salted almonds and feta dip).

Just be sure that whatever you do, you save room for dessert. Pastry chef Megan Williams' creations are always on point: Though her chocolate pretzel bar with dark chocolate ganache, malted milk cream, and caramel drizzle is a fan favorite, she’s got some decadent new items on the menu, like a Meyer Lemon Tart with frozen mousse, lemon curd, candied zest, burnt meringue, yogurt crema, graham crumbs, and citrus segments. Prepare to be wowed.

Her rotating roster might include 'Chopped' judge Maneet Chauhan whipping up a gourmet Indian feast or New York rising star Zak Pelaccio putting together a "Hudson Meets Nashville" dinner. However, there are some staples, as well.

Every Saturday and Sunday, POP boasts a decadent #ActualBrunch with the best waffles in town -- like the s'mores waffle with Mezcal maple syrup and smoked walnuts (tip: go with the waffles or you’ll experience major food envy of everyone around you) -- and Gavigan now serves her popular steaming bowls of noodles all day every weekday. Dec. 28, 2015 - It's only been open for two months, but clearly Bartaco filled a void, as there's never an evening when patrons aren't spilling out of the garage doors and out onto the roomy heated patio. (It helps that Nashville has been a balmy 60 degrees all fall/winter long, nearly doubling the seating capacity.)

The 10th location of the Connecticut-based franchise, Bartaco's 12South outpost caters to the shoppers and heavy foot traffic that traverse the pedestrian-friendly corridor. With more than a dozen types of tacos -- heed my advice and order all pork belly (and OK, maybe a cauliflower or two) -- as well as small plates like Mexican street corn, plantains, or pork tamales, Bartaco's casual street-food-inspired fare makes it the perfect impromptu dinner out (if you can find a table, that is). And the cocktail list leaves little to be desired; on top of classics like margaritas and sangria, there's a great menu of libations like an apple pie moonshine-spiked cider, or a winter Caipirinha made from freshly-squeezed juices. There are also kiddie cocktails for the underage and agua frescas for those who like their drinks san booze.

        Taverns

        917 Woodland StNashville, TN

Dec. 15, 2015 - For a decade now, the Basement has been one of Nashville's most beloved dive venues, tucked away beneath Grimey's record shop, and delivering some of the best live music in town.

Earlier this year, it expanded its offerings to include an East Nashville outpost as well. In just over nine months, the Basement East has accrued a similarly loyal following, and many big names like the Brothers Osborne are clamoring to host listening parties, album launches, and showcases in its large open space. With the holidays comes a smattering of hot, open-to-the-public sets as well, including the sold-out Shadowboxers show on Dec. 17. Didn't get tickets? No worries, there are plenty of other great acts to see, including tonight's mash-up of Fleetwood Mac hits performed by songwriters and artists such as Ryan Beaver, Lucie Silvas, Maren Morris, Natalie Hemby, and Kelleigh Bannen.

        5th & Taylor

        Restaurants

        1411 5th Ave NNashville, TN

Dec. 9, 2015 - When it comes to new restaurants debuting in Music City, 2015 may well have been Nashville's biggest boom to date. But few spots have been anywhere near as popular as 5th & Taylor, the industrial-chic concept on the edge of Germantown that debuted earlier this year.

It helps to have a celebrity chef like Chattanooga restaurateur and six-time James Beard award winner Daniel Lindley at the helm. His menu of contemporary American fare boasts Southern-friendly starters like Cracklin' Cornbread and bacon-wrapped quail and dates, and entrees such as chicken and dumplings and beef cheek stew. Seafood like steamed mussels or halibut is always fresh, and the beer can chicken and that good, old-fashioned burger remain fan favorites.

While the food is indeed tasty, the warehouse space steals the show: High beams are accentuated by a wooden bar, indoor fig trees, a large statue of Revolutionary War hero Francis Nash (for whom the city was named), fur throws, and splashy artwork that Lindley created himself; rows of flickering candles line the booths. On warmer nights, the outdoor tree-lined patio is just as good a place to be as any, though it will likely be several months before spring arrives and al fresco dining is an option again. Though I've yet to see it in person, there's also a private dining room concealed by one-way mirrors, giving the dark, spacious, and open digs even more of an air of mystery.

Insider Tip: Don't leave the premises without trying the chocolate-y Elvis Moon Pie dessert, presented as an uncanny recreation of the King's face.

Dec. 1, 2015 - I couldn't get behind National Cat Day (achoo! I'm deathly allergic). I was "meh" about National Tequila Day (mainly because tequila does not a pleasant hangover make). I was perplexed to find out there was an International Aura Awareness Day (what does that even mean?). Indeed, the list of "national/international days" seems to grow exponentially each year, but National Cookie Day? Now, that's a "holiday" I can support with my whole heart -- and stomach!

Lucky for all you sweets lovers, it's right around the corner. On December 4, there's no better place to celebrate this special day than at the 30-year-old Christie Cookie Co., which is doling out one free cookie per customer from its Germantown storefront all day long. And for a price, you can pick up more than just cookies while you're visiting the Christie Cookie HQ, too; they also sell brownies, granola bars and tubs of cookie dough so you can bake these sinful treats right out of your own home when the mood strikes. (In other words, every day can be National Cookie Day for you!)

Nov. 23, 2015 - Though Nashville's still enjoying a balmy fall, I'm already looking forward to the winter days where there's nowhere better to be than holed up in a corner at one of Nashville's beloved breweries. I'm a frequent purchaser of Jackalope products by the six-pack, but I also look forward to the releases of their special brews, like the new chocolate mocha Snowman Stout, which debuted in mid-November. Twenty percent of all the proceeds from taproom sales benefit Agape Animal Rescue, a local non-profit that aids misplaced dogs in finding forever homes. You can also get in the Christmas spirit with Jackalope on Dec. 7, 2015, for its National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation & Snowman Stout Party at the Belcourt Theatre -- a $15 wristband gets you a couple hours with the Griswolds and all the brews you want.

More of a drink-what-you-work-off type of beer consumer? Every Saturday, Jackalope offers Beer & Free Yoga at 11 am.

        Just Love Coffee Roasters

        Coffee & Espresso Restaurants

        7010 Executive Center DrBrentwood, TN

Nov. 4, 2015 - Nashville is seeing a boom in coffee houses, and I've tried to turn a blind eye to all of the new cafes cropping up. This is only because I will hole up in there and drink caffeine all day long if given the option because specialty coffee drinks are my weakness. Then, I found myself down in Brentwood after a personal training appointment seriously needing a shot of espresso. I walked out the door of the fitness studio and Just Love Coffee was staring me in the eye. So I went in.

This local mini-chain now has three locations in the area and roasts all of its beans out of its Murfreesboro headquarters. I loved the vibe, the friendly service, and the fact that the barista served me my latte on an oversized record turntable (anything kitschy gets me every time!). They also serve food, which I haven't tried yet, like the popular bacon tater or berry, berry, bo berry waffle; All are at very reasonable prices. I can't say I'll have self-control next time around ....

Oct. 7, 2015 - Winter is coming … and the cocktails are following suit. OK, so fine, it's still a bit balmy in Nashville, but the menus are changing with the seasons nevertheless. I mean, a Gingerbread Old Fashioned? Forget about it! I'll take three. While Embers' drinks menu is definitely worth sipping through, there's another reason to head to the 12South Pacific Northwest-themed bar: the new Embers Cocktail Master Class series. Led by bar manager Gary Hayward, participants will sit through a demonstration of mixology techniques and then break into small groups where they can take a stab at creating their own. Even better? New recipes will be housed on recipe cards behind the bar so you can order your personal cocktail next time you're in. Taking place on the first Saturday of every month from 3-5pm, each class is limited to 25 participants and costs $25 a pop.

Sept. 18, 2015 - Baja Burrito is classic Mexican fare in easy-to-understand mix-and-match taco plates and burritos. Their streamlined checkout counter with prep taking place right beneath your eyes is one of the fastest around. I like to switch it up with a fish, steak, and guacamole taco basket and a couple cheap Tecates and sit in the spacious outdoor deck beneath an umbrella. The popsicles served as dessert come from Nashville darling Las Paletas, made with fresh fruit, vegetables, and sometimes grains, nuts, flowers, and herbs from community gardens throughout the area. Yum! I'll have one of each!

        Puckett's Boat House

        Seafood Restaurants

        94 E Main StFranklin, TN

Sept. 8, 2015 - Puckett's is a Nashville institution, having opened its first grocery store in Leiper's Fork many moons ago (the 1950s, to be specific). Then came the Franklin location a little over a decade ago, and a downtown Nashville restaurant followed several years later, as did a Columbia outpost. And now there's also the two-story Puckett's Boat House in Franklin, the latest to debut in 2012, which offers the same down-home Southern vibe -- a mix of Memphis and New Orleans with a wealth of tasty seafood on tap.

Seafood in a landlocked state can be an iffy endeavor, but you have no need to worry here. Everything, from the shrimp and grits to the Gulf oysters, tastes like it was plucked fresh from the sea and plopped right on your plate. It's more lowcountry than BBQ, like the other Puckett's locales, and what was formerly the boat house's Bait Shop was recently transformed into a wine bar and cigar patio that focuses more on hard-to-find vinos and rare blends than the run-of-the-mill stuff you can find anywhere (it also stocks gourmet coffee and other treats). Like all the Puckett's locations, the Boat House has live music most nights of the week.

        Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams

        Ice Cream & Frozen Desserts

        1892 Eastland AveNashville, TN

July 27, 2015 - There are few restaurateurs I admire as much as Jeni Britton Bauer, who while not a native Nashvillian, has exploded into the local market with not one but four shops, including an outpost in the Farmers' Market and a roving ice cream truck. The artisan dessert maker launched her first concept in her home state of Ohio before going on to open her eponymous chain more than a decade ago, focusing on grass-grazed milk, local produce, and American bean-to-bar chocolate. In other words, Jeni speaks my love language.

Now, I was already a regular at the original Nashville outpost in East Nashville, which debuted just four years ago, then a second opened near me in 12 South. I still go there regularly, but only middle of the day or late at night as the peak-hour foot traffic wraps out the store and around the block. Then came the Farmers' Market branch, then, much to my delight, the fourth brick-and-mortar opened in Hillsboro Village just weeks ago. Its design is different than its predecessor, but the new shop still offers the same great service, the same great flavors -- like my preference and the fan favorite, the brown butter almond brittle, offered year round -- and some delightful seasonal offerings alongside specialties like the Tin Roof sundae (Ndali Estate Vanilla Bean ice cream, extra bitter hot fudge sauce, and Virginia peanuts).

In other words, "diet starts Monday" is never a phrase I'm going to udder (har de har har), as long as there's a Jeni's within walking distance to my home.

        Rolf and Daughters

        American Restaurants

        700 Taylor StNashville, TN

June 22, 2015 - The first thing you need to know about Rolf & Daughters, the two-year-old modern Italian restaurant nestled deep in Germantown, is that you're not going to know half the ingredients on the menu. That's OK: The unpretentious servers really are there to help -- and besides, what's your iPhone for if not to Google every third thing that looks unfamiliar?

The second thing you need to know is that it doesn't really matter what you order; everything is good here, be it squid ink canestri or potato gnocchi or a simple starter like the sourdough bread with seaweed butter. The Belgian chef-owner Philip Krajeck whips up fresh, hand-shaped pasta on the regular, and the menu changes with the seasons.

Lastly, know that street parking is easy, the softly lit patio is a hot commodity in summer months (and is first-come, first-served), and the bourbon and whiskey collection is impressive to say the least -- though truth be told I always opt for one of the creative craft cocktails. I don't know if I prefer the Nothing Camparis 2 U over the Cynarnold Schwarzenegger, but I will say order the summery Spiker and Sponge (Dickel Rye, Jackalope IPA, Peychaud's, peach shrub, honey, and lemon) if it's on the cocktail list.

And above all else, what's not to like about a restaurant that cleverly references itself by the acronym R.A.D.?

        Little Octopus

        Vegetarian Restaurants

        604 Gallatin AveNashville, TN

June 12, 2015 - I've long admired Sarah Gavigan: A food entrepreneur with a music industry background, she launched her pop-up style ramen meals, Otaku South, several years ago to a very eager crowd of izakaya lovers. What came next was POP, an actual event space that aimed to host pop-up dinners like hers and opened its doors in East Nashville a year ago.

But like every business-minded individual, Gavigan couldn't stop there. In the midst of debuting a brick and mortar for Otaku -- which will arrive in the Gulch at the end of the summer -- she decided to launch a new concept, Little Octopus, in the POP space to fill the void her daily ramen meals have left behind.

Gavigan tapped Daniel Herget to be her executive chef and gave him full rein on plotting out the menu. The result is fantastic: a bevy of reasonably-priced seafood options that are health, fresh, and prominently gluten-free (many are vegan, too). My favorite was the Hamachi starter with a green apple, truffle, lime and jalapeno relish, though the roasted maduros are a can't-miss order. I’m allergic to avocado but my dining companions gobbled up that appetizer without pause. Next, we dug into two creative bowls, the Valencia Rice with cobia and coconut milk being the true crowd pleaser. Sarah told us not to pass on the burger, so we did as she said -- why more chefs don't dress up a grass-fed beef patty with Manchego and pequillo aioli is beyond me. I can’t wait to try dinner, and I love that Little Octopus will be serving two meals a day, six days a week.

Every bit as fun as the menu is the large, 50-by-20-foot octopus mural winding its way around the exterior of the building. I predict it will be the new "I Believe in Nashville" sign in terms of Instagram-ability, so get over there and be one of the first to selfie in front of it.

        Silo

        American Restaurants

        1121 5th Ave NNashville, TN

June 4, 2015 - The first time I went to Silo was for brunch nearly three years ago on opening weekend. Even though you're never supposed to judge a restaurant based on its opening weekend, I was so underwhelmed by the food that I never did end up going back -- until a few weeks ago, that is, when I was looking for a 4 p.m. spot for drinks in Germantown. (Note: Not nearly enough restaurants in Nashville open their bars before 5 p.m.)

Much to my delight, Silo was not only open but also had happy hour specials, as they do many days of the week ($6 cocktails, $5 select wines, $4 craft beers). I had a pair of artfully crafted cocktails -- complete with some of the friendliest service I've received in town -- which I took out to the patio outside. This time of year, there's rarely an occasion that doesn't call for a bit of patio-sitting and people-watching.

The food looked really good, too -- elevated Southern cuisine, they call it -- and I've long been eyeing the dessert menu after meeting the pastry chef at a wedding and hearing all about his pot de crème with salted caramel sauce and caramel-bacon popcorn. And with creative takes on three of my favorite dishes -- Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and deviled eggs -- on the menu, I'm thinking it might just be time for me to give the food a second chance, wouldn’t you agree?

        Restaurants

        1201 5th Ave NNashville, TN

May 21, 2015 - I love me a good chocolate shop. What girl doesn't? But until recently there really was nowhere in town where I could settle in with my laptop and eat my weight in chocolate. Then, Tempered European Indulgence opened at the end of last year and all but did away with any chance of me sticking to my pre-summer diet.

Truffles, caramels, dipped delights of all kinds -- Tempered does it all. And for those who aren't certified chocoholics like myself, there's still plenty of reason to go to this cutesy cafe, tucked away in the heart of Germantown. For one, cheese. For another, wine. Or why not go all out and order the Tempur Board, complete with meat, cheese, jams and fruit, then wash it all down with a wine pairing or two?

It's a great excuse for a girls' outing, perfect for a date night or even ideal for those flying solo, thanks to the intimate size of the cafe (not to mention, a great patio area). Tempered doesn't do coffee, but that's fine by me: I can get all the caffeine I need from a bar of cabernet-infused sea salt chocolate or, in warmer months, a mug of steaming hot cocoa.

May 12, 2015 - This time of year, before the humidity has set in for the summer, everyone flocks to the patios -- and there’s nowhere better in town to see (and be seen) than the side porch at Whiskey Kitchen, one of the anchors of the bustling Gulch neighborhood.

While Whiskey is open for lunch and dinner everyday, I prefer it during daylight hours, before the throngs of residents inhabiting the crop of high-rises that surround it descend upon this open, airy gastropub.

Typically, I start with the Tennessee Whiskey Yam Fries, a heaping mound of skinny sweet potato fries sprinkled with sea salt and brown sugar, then served with jalapeno ketchup. Only when with a group, though, as the appetizer is positively massive.

If I'm feeling indulgent, I’ll opt for the bourbon poppers as my entree, but more often than not, I try to keep it on the healthy -- or at least, healthier -- side with a Cobb salad or the ahi ponzu wrap. Saving calories on my main just means more room for dessert, the options of which are always decadent, like a peanut butter cheesecake or gooey bread pudding.

Of course, as its name implies, the restaurant-bar features a long list of whiskeys, including a number of specialty cocktails like a Jamey Ginger or Blueberry Julep. Liquid lunch -- how 'bout it?

April 17, 2015 - Germantown is booming, and with growth comes cafes and other such neighborhood gems. One beloved spot to crop up recently is Red Bicycle Coffee & Crêpes, a company started in Chapel Hill, N.C., that added a Nashville outpost a few years back.

While I typically go there for the ever-changing specialty lattes, as well as the free Wi-Fi, Red Bicycle does a stellar job of living up to its Parisian café-inspired image with both its atmosphere (the outdoor patio being a favorite place to camp out in warmer months) and the 40 varieties of crepes on tap (my next goal: to try them all). Veggies, vegans, gluten-free -- this cafe caters to diners of all walks.

Recently, the company expanded to include a second location down on Nolensville Pike in south Nashville, a bustling area much in need of quaint establishments like Red Bicycle.

April 7, 2015 -- With so many new restaurants cropping up everywhere you look, it can be hard to remember to visit the classic haunts, the ones we all frequented before Nashville graced the cover of every food magazine, far and wide. But BrickTop's on West End is just as bustling as ever.

The near-decade old restaurant now has outposts in Florida, Missouri, Georgia, and North Carolina, as well as a location down in Cool Springs, but the original still nails the service time and time again. A popular spot for a power lunch, you'll find BrickTop's full of suits and others doing business over a meal, the servers attentive, the wine flowing freely. While traditionally I'm not much of a salad lover, I can't deny the tasty mounds of greens on the menu -- the cobb and the barbecued chicken salads are constantly in rotation on my BrickTop's order. Weekend brunch at BrickTop's is every bit as busy as the weekdays, thanks to a bevy of Benedicts on tap and some sweet sensations like a bananas Foster-inspired French toast.

        Butchertown Hall

        American Restaurants

        1416 4th Ave NNashville, TN

March 23, 2015 - Germantown is having its second coming with all the new restaurants and concepts cropping up along its corridors this year. One of the first 2015 additions to see the light of day is Butchertown Hall, which opened quietly on Valentine’s Day. The “Texo-German” beer hall concept is rather odd: tacos, burgers, brisket and sausages -- all on the same menu, with a hearty craft beer selection to boot. The execution, though? Flawless (or almost... read on).

Working on Broadway, I tire of the same lunch spots in downtown and the Gulch, so I slipped away to Germantown last week for a power lunch with a friend. What I really wanted was the crispy pork belly BLT, but seeing as I was having an early dinner, I opted to go lighter and ordered two tacos instead. My friend and I each had one pork carnitas taco (delicious) and one brisket, which wound up being a little too tough to chew through (so the kind server brought us another carnitas as consolation). My dining companion also had the Mexican street corn, but given I was going straight to a meeting afterward, I didn’t want to risk getting cilantro stuck in my teeth. Next time, though; there’s always a next time.

I’m not really a soda drinker, but when I saw house-made varieties like ginger tamarind on the menu, I ordered one without hesitation (it was delicious and I wanted seconds). The interior of Butchertown Hall is gorgeous: walls lined with clean rows of white subway tile, dark wooden floors, a U-shaped bar seating an overflow of lunchtime diners and the servers clad in gray denim aprons. Even though the brisket taco needed a little work -- but hey, they’re brand new and still working out the kinks -- here’s free wi-fi and plenty of space to spread out and work in the off-hours, and I can already tell you I’m going to be a regular.

        Distillers

        1414 Clinton StNashville, TN 37203

March 13, 2015 - I love me a good bourbon. What true Tennessee girl doesn't? But ever since Nelson's Green Brier started manufacturing its own brand, Belle Meade Bourbon, I've been a loyal consumer of the product.

The story of how the company came to be is an interesting one in itself: Brothers Andy and Charlie Nelson didn't even know they were the heirs to a boozy throne until they stumbled upon an old distillery sign on a chance visit to the small town of Greenbrier just north of Nashville. More research unearthed a startling discovery: that their great-great-great-grandfather Charles Nelson's whiskey was once even bigger than Jack Daniel's.

What followed were several years of hard work reviving the lost legacy. There are plenty of other fascinating components to the nearly 150-year-old history behind Nelson's Green Brier, but you'll have to visit the distillery -- which offers free tours and tastings Tuesday through Sunday -- on your own to take a trip down memory lane via the in-depth visual timeline. Although Belle Meade Bourbon has been on the market since 2013, the distillery didn’t debut until the tail end of 2014. Occupying 30,000 square feet of space in historic Marathon Village, it's now chock full of artifacts, merchandise and -- of course -- bourbon prime for tasting. Unfortunately, due to Tennessee law, you can't order cocktails. On the flip side, there is a bonus: Nelson's Green Brier sells bottles of booze even on Sundays, so if you need to stock up on that inconvenient day of the week when all the liquor stores are closed, now you know where to head.

        Biscuit Love

        Breakfast, Brunch & Lunch Restaurants

        316 11th Ave SNashville, TN

Feb. 20, 2015 - There's a new breakfast spot in town, and people already are flocking there in droves.

Not that that comes as any surprise to locals. Co-owners Karl and Sarah Worley already had a Nashville-tested-and-approved concept with their sleek Airstream trailer, Biscuit Love Truck, that traveled the streets of Music City for two years with lines forming wherever they parked. It was so well received that they decided to open a brick-and-mortar in January and serve more of the good stuff -- but in larger volume (92 seats to be exact, with more seating on the patio to come in warmer months).

Open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., this order-at-the-counter-and-take-a-table joint has many of its food truck predecessor's popular items on the menu, like the Princess Biscuit (hot chicken, pickles, mustard, honey) and the Easty Nasty (buttermilk fried chicken, local cheddar cheese, housemade sausage gravy), as well as some new dishes, like the Lily -- biscuit French Toast with lemon, mascarpone and blueberry compote (which you must order; just trust me on this one).

Despite only keeping daytime hours, Biscuit Love Brunch has a full bar on top of the typical mimosa and Bloody Mary offerings with inventive cocktails that utilize local liquors like American Born Dixie Moonshine, Corsair and Whisper Creek. There's also a ham bar featuring local specialties with different curing methods, as well as a grab-and-go pastry offering should you not have time to sit down for a proper meal. For those who want lunch, there's a bit of that, too, with burgers, sandwiches and salads on the menu.

Insider tip: Should you skip the weekend brunch rush and go during the week, you'll (likely) be able to find a table right away. There's an uncovered lot across the street, as well as a garage in the Icon building, both of which offer an hour's worth of free parking.

        American Restaurants

        210 Almond StNashville, TN

Feb. 10, 2015 -- I'm going to be honest: My husband and I aren’t really the type to celebrate Valentine’s Day. But if we did? I’d spend it at the Farm House, no questions asked.

Ever since this casual, under-the-radar, farm-to-table restaurant launched in October 2013, it’s been one of my go-to downtown spots for dinner (and lunch... and brunch... and happy hour). There are few chefs in town so committed to sourcing all their ingredients as owner Trey Cioccia. But it’s not just the Farm House's sustainable mission that keeps me coming back. It's the ever-changing menu -- pork belly pop-tarts, Pimento cheese beignets, and the gnudi of the day being three recent favorites-- and the chef’s creative spin on dishes that have landed me on the frequent diner list. Last I checked, he still had a few 10 p.m. slots left for his prix-fixed Valentine’s Day dinner -- $65 per person for a dinner for two -- so if you've failed to make plans for that special someone, you better get on that before it's sold out.

You could also consider heading there on Sunday for a belated brunch date, if you can't make dinner work. Morning diners will dig everything on the Sunday brunch menu, but especially the five-item pastry basket, which might feature -- if you're lucky -- a chocolate croissant (made in house by Pastry Chef Emma Hofland), salted caramel macaroon, morning bun, cream cheese turnover, and a classic eclair. Since this is the South, after all, the basket of goodies is served with a mini mason jar of freshly whipped cream for dipping.

        Restaurants

        33 Peabody StNashville, TN

Jan. 22, 2015 - Serial restaurateurs (and brothers) Max and Benjamin Goldberg’s urban playground has a little bit of everything: a Crema coffee outpost; a “living room” with workstations and ample space to spread out; an outdoor lounge outfitted with Bocce ball, Ping-Pong, dipping pools and an Airstream trailer bar (open seasonally); a karaoke room; a six-lane bowling alley; and of course a bar and restaurant.

While they serve three meals a day every day, I’m partial to Pinewood at lunch for the creamy soups and creative sandwiches -- or during the late afternoon lull when I can claim a workstation and sip an Easy Like Sunday Morning (one of the many spiked coffee drinks) while I work. In summer months, I favor the tiki-style cocktails out on the patio, while dipping my toes in the water (and I must say, the no-kids policy makes it doubly appealing). Regardless, the fried broccoli with a side of aioli is a must no matter the hour of the day.

        Night Clubs

        818 3rd Ave SNashville, TN

Jan. 15, 2015 - You never know who might be on the lineup here -- whether Nashville’s Deacon Claybourne (aka Chip Esten) or Gunnar Scott (aka Sam Palladio), country acts such as the Brothers Osborne, or British indie songwriters like Lucie Silvas -- and you also never know who might be sitting out in the audience (note: there’s almost always someone whose music you’d recognize from the radio, so keep your eyes peeled). But that’s what makes this no-pretense live music venue that’s long been a downtown anchor so great: its caliber of talent and its laid-back, under-the-radar vibe. Arrive early for a show so you can nab a coveted table; the upstairs seating in particular is prime for people-watching.
