Recently, a non-surgical alternative modality called Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) gained the Food and Drug Administration’s approval for treatment of recalcitrant plantar fasciitis. This technology has been around for over 20 years for treatment of kidney stones. It is a non-surgical, non-invasive alternative for chronic heel pain sufferers who have failed to improve after an extended period of conservative therapy.
Cryotherapy
There are several treatments for plantar warts, the type of treatment received depends upon the patient's needs.. The list of in-office treatments includes, but is not limited to trichloroacetic acid, bichloracetic acid, cryotherapy, pulsed-dye lasers, immune therapy and vaccines. Understandably, the potential side effects associated with these treatment options are typically more extensive. For example, there may be risk of pain and secondary infection.

Having an open wound, increases the chances of infection. If you have a non healing wound on your lower extremity, it is essential that you act to get it healed as quickly as possible to prevent infection and further complications. If you have diabetes, you are especially at risk for complications. The sooner a wound is treated the greater the patient's chances are of healing.

Dr. Katzen is board certified in minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery, procedures which allow many common foot and ankle procedures to be performed with the use of a fluoroscope through a small incision with minimal trauma, scaring and down time.
Bunion Surgery
Bunion surgery, or bunionectomy, realigns the bone, ligaments, tendons and nerves so your big toe can be brought back to its correct position and the bump on the inside of the joint removed. Many bunion surgeries are performed on a same-day basis (no hospital stays) using a local anesthesia. During your recovery it is common to have pain and swelling. This swelling and stiffness may be persistent for several months.
Bunions
Bunions are one of the most common foot disorders treated by our Bunion Specialist Dr. Katzen. In fact, bunions are one of the most common disorders treated by most podiatrists across the country. More than half the women in America have bunions, a common deformity often blamed on wearing tight, narrow shoes. Bunions cause the base of your big toe (Metatarsophalangeal Joint) to enlarge and protrude. The skin over it may be red and tender. This can be acquired through time or it can be congenital (you got it from your family).
Ingrown Toenails
An ingrown toenail occurs when a corner of the nail grows into the flesh of the toe, causing redness and swelling, followed by pain and often infection. Ingrown toenails can occur due to improper trimming of the toenail, trauma or genetic factors.

The procedure may be performed in the office under local anesthesia with or without IV sedation and postoperative recovery period normally involves no more than one day off your feet, no casts or pins, and often little or no time off work depending on your occupation. Patients having digital surgery to permanently cure bone spurs and corns can often return to their own shoes in 1-3 days.
Calluses
Corn and calluses are thick layers of dead skin that normally develop on your feet and toes. They are caused by excessive friction or pressure often from ill-fitting, tight shoes. Another cause is due to frequent, repetitive motions such as running that cause friction between the bones, skin and shoes.
Fungus
Dr. Burton J. Katzen, DPM, LLC offers state of the art laser treatment of fungal toenail infections. Fungal toenails are caused by an organism that grows in and under the nail. The fungus likes to grow in warm, moist places like your shoes. Many patients pick up fungal toenail infections in the gym locker room, from a nail salon, wet shoes or from trauma. Fungus can stay in the nails for many years and can be passed from one person to another.

Many patients come to our office with heel pain, Achilles tendinitis and multiple types of sports injuries. What we are doing is a treatment called Shockwave Therapy.
Physical Therapy
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, icing, physical therapy, supportive taping, bracing, and orthotics are common treatments for painful progressive flatfoot.. In some cases, surgery may be needed to repair a torn or damaged tendon and restore normal function.

Individuals with diabetes are prone to many complications, the most common one being foot problems, including infections, which if left untreated, could lead to potentially serious consequences, including amputation. A diabetic may also develop kidney, eye, heart, teeth, and circulation problems along with nerve damage. Fortunately, a diabetic who is under control and lives a healthy life style has a far less chance of developing any of these complications.

Unfortunately, as many as 80% of untreated sprained ankles result in prolonged symptoms. These can include chronic pain or ankle instability, that makes a person prone to repetitive injury later in life and arthritic changes.
Ankle Sprain
Many of our patients present with foot or ankle injuries. These injuries could be the result of simply tripping on the stairs, stepping on a foreign object while barefoot or from playing their favorite sports activity.
Bunions Problems
Most bunions can be treated conservatively with wider & softer shoes, pads to relieve the pressure and/or medications. If this does not help then surgical treatment is indicated.

Flat Feet
Flat feet, fallen arches, or “pes planus” is normally a symptomless and fortunately painless condition. When pain in the foot, ankle, or lower leg does occur, especially in children, the feet should be evaluated. Painful progressive flatfoot, otherwise known as tibialis posterior tendonitis or adult-acquired flatfoot, refers to inflammation of the posterior tibial tendon. This condition arises when the tendon becomes inflamed, stretched, or torn. Left untreated, it may lead to severe disability and chronic pain. People are predisposed to tibialis posterior tendonitis if they have flat feet or an abnormal attachment of the tendon to the bones in the midfoot.
Fungus Toenails
Keryflex is durable, yet flexible nail restoration, which creates a realistic, natural looking nail in place of the damaged nail. Since Keryflex is nonporous and not water soluble, it is ideal for post laser treatment for toenail fungus to prevent re-infection while the healthy nail is growing. You can put nail polish on this new nail and use nail polish remover on the nail without damaging the nail replacement resin. You can engage in their normal exercise routine after toe nails have been remodeled by Keryflex. Keryflex can also be used to restore a chronic ingrown toenail before considering a surgical treatment. In as little as 15 minutes, Dr. Burton Katzen can create a realistic, natural looking nail in place of a damaged nail. The does this by using the KeryFlex nail restoration system. Hammertoes
Hammertoe is a deformity of the second, third, fourth or fifth toes. In this condition, the toe is bent at the middle joint, resembling a hammer. Left untreated, hammertoes can become inflexible and require surgery.

Foot Warts
At Dr. Burton J. Katzen, DPM, LLC, we offer many wart removal treatment options. Foot Warts (Plantar Warts) are a common foot condition that we treat in our practice. If you have one or more growths on the bottom of your foot that may or may not be painful, chances are it's a plantar wart. Plantar Warts are caused by a virus. You may notice little black dots in the wart. People sometimes think these dots are splinters. They are actually the blood vessels that nourish the wart. You can get viral warts anywhere you walk barefoot, such as the local pool, karate studio, dance studio, locker room or even from a pedicure salon.
Plantar Fasciitis
At our practice, Dr. Burton J. Katzen, DPM, LLC, we treat a lot of heel pain or plantar fasciitis. Many of the symptoms include pain when you first get up in the morning, burning, numbness and increased symptoms by the end of the day. The pain is usually caused by tightening of the plantar fascia ligament located on the bottom of the foot. The plantar fascia ligament supports the arch. When you're resting, the ligament contracts. As you start to walk, the ligament pulls and may tear slightly causing pain. Heel pain can also be brought on by trauma, over exertion, ill- fitting shoes or poor foot alignment.
