Arrangements in custody disputes and divorce law are ever changing. Having an attorney who can guide you through this challenging process is paramount to the quality of life and peace of mind you can have post-dissolution.
Child Support
Child support guidelines in Ohio were designed back in the 1980s. That was before everyone carried a cellphone, before the Internet was essential to business and when paying $2 or $3 for a gallon of gas would have been unfathomable. Clearly a lot has changed during this time. However, guidelines for fathers rights when it comes to child support have not changed since their implementation.
Child Custody and Visitation
Whether you are looking for a divorce attorney − a seasoned child custody advocate −or you simply need help with parenting, visitation and support issues, Susan has the expertise to help you. Divorce and custody battles are emotionally charged issues for everyone involved. Susan is a skilled advocate who can cut through the emotional fog and help you focus on the underlying challenges that need to be resolved through the legal proceedings.
Premarital Agreement
While an imminent divorce cannot be predicted and is not planned by most couples, it may be wise to implement a prenuptial agreement to help simplify a separation, should it occur, and in particular if children or substantial assets are involved. A prenuptial agreement is helpful not only in same-sex marriage cases but also in opposite-sex marriages.
Spousal Support
Alimony, which is referred to today as “spousal support,” is intended to help you catch up financially following a separation or divorce. When issued, it can aid you financially in obtaining training and education to advance your career, and in providing financial support for everyday needs such as food and groceries.
Legal Separation
When a couple decides to obtain a legal separation, they must go through a process similar to that of a divorce, filing the separation with a court and receiving a decree. They remain legally married; however, they must follow the court orders.
Annulment
When a marriage is annulled, it makes it as if the marriage never happened. Much like a divorce, an annulment cannot be obtained unless there are grounds for one. Annulments are usually only available if the marriage is of a very short duration, unless grounds for annulment are discovered at a later time.
Child Abuse
When Susan graduated law school, she had already been a social worker for 15 years. She had worked for two different county welfare departments dealing with abused and neglected children and during that period she developed an emergency child abuse response system for Geauga County.
Each town or village may have its own court, and some cities have municipal courts that may serve several communities. Each city has its own police department and prosecutors. Each court processes cases a little differently. Having an attorney can cut down on waiting time and confusion. Hiring an attorney signals to the court that you take the matter seriously and that may have an impact on the outcome of the case.
DUI/DWI
Traffic Violations
Do you need an attorney for every speeding ticket? It depends. How many speeding tickets do you have? How important is it that you not get any points on your license? If you’re 50 and this is your first ticket you may not need an attorney. If you’re 22 and this is your third ticket you probably should have a lawyer.
Misdemeanors

Whether you are a landlord or a tenant you have certain rights and certain obligations. The Landlord Tenant Law in Ohio can be a trap for the unwary and uninformed. It is a good idea to talk with an attorney if you are a new landlord: about your lease, how to put policies in place for rent collection, develop accurate forms for notifying tenants that you will be entering their apartments, what to do when the rent is late and more. Also, there are special forms to use if you need to evict a tenant and certain timelines that must be strictly followed. An attorney can help you do it right the first time.
If you have considerable assets (over $1 million) you probably should consider the tax savings available through a trust. For that you need a specialist, someone who has a background both in tax and in estate planning. If your assets are considerably less, a simple will, living will and a durable power of attorney can suffice for basic estate planning.
Wills
In a simple will (also called a last will and testament) you spell out who you want to leave your belongings to, and who you want to be appointed to make sure those belongings go where you want. Any life insurance policies and investments should have beneficiary designations so they will go to the people you want and not to your creditors.
Power of Attorney
Durable power of attorney gives someone you choose the ability to take care of your affairs if you are unable to. There are general durable power of attorney and specific durable power of attorney. General durable power of attorney allow the person you designate to handle your financial affairs, sell any property you may own and use your money to maintain your home and business while you are incapacitated. A specific durable power of attorney limits the power of your designated representative to certain power, usually health care decisions.
