Arthritis
The most common types of arthritis in the feet are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition that occurs with age, in which the cartilage between the foot and ankle joints wears away, causing the bones to rub together. Injuries such as broken bones, torn ligaments, and ankle sprains can also cause arthritis to form.
Plantar Fasciitis
If you have an arch disorder such as cavus foot (high arches), flat feet, plantar fasciitis, or overpronation, proper arch support is essential to avoiding or relieving any associated foot pain.

If your insurance is an HMO/managed care plan and you are required to obtain a referral from your primary care physician, the referral must be obtained before you can be seen for an office visit.

Diabetic Foot Care
Born in Valparaiso, Indiana, Dr. Chad A. Miller moved to Ohio to join Cincinnati Foot & Ankle Care in 2000 after finishing his residency. His professional interests include primary podiatric medicine, diabetic foot care, and reconstructive foot and ankle surgery.

Endoscopy
Arthroscopy can be used to treat joint problems within the bones of the feet and toes. Endoscopy, a similar type of minimally invasive surgery, can be used to treat plantar fasciitis by making an incision in the plantar fascia ligament to release the tension and relieve pain.

Ultrasound
Foreign bodies: Common foreign bodies include splinters of wood, plastic, glass and metal. Do not attempt to remove foreign bodies at home. Doing so usually pushes it further and requires deeper incision for removal. It is important to see your Cincinnati Foot & Ankle Care podiatrist as soon as possible for easier detection of the point-of-entry. Failure to remove the object may lead to infection, and other complications. Cincinnati Foot & Ankle Care locations have X-ray and ultrasound imaging equipment for locating a foreign object. In most cases, a simple procedure can be performed in the office to remove the foreign object. In some cases, it may be necessary to bring patients to the operating room.
MRI
In some cases, an MRI will be ordered before rendering a diagnosis. If your foot cyst or tumor is not cancerous and doesn’t cause you pain, there is no need to treat it. If it does cause discomfort, there are various treatment options for soft tissue masses and tumors. If it is a fluid-filled mass, a podiatrist may drain it, use an injectable steroid to shrink it, or surgically remove it and have it examined (biopsy).

Bunion Surgery
Bunion surgery is recommended only after other treatments, such as wearing proper shoes, fail to correct their symptoms. There are a number of surgical approaches for bunionectomy. Newer advancements in technology allow for better correction and earlier weight-bearing, with Lapiplasty, Lapifuse, and other patented technology available for this type of surgical procedure. Your foot and ankle surgeon will discuss which is most appropriate for your condition so you will know what to expect.
Bunions
Bunions are a foot deformity made up of bone and soft tissue that form on the base of your big toes. They usually develop when you wear shoes that are too tight or small in the toe area, which can cause the bones in the big toe to become misaligned. Bunions in the feet are more common in women who wear high heels but they can also be inherited. They are often painful and can inhibit your ability to perform everyday tasks.
Gangrene
Foot care is especially important for people with diabetes. That’s because conditions like peripheral neuropathy, caused by chronically high blood sugar and diabetes, can lead to nerve damage and impair feeling in the lower appendages. Likewise, peripheral artery disease (PAD) decreases blood flow which, in turn, causes pain and swelling in the calves and feet, as well as ulcers or sores that won’t heal, and, in extreme cases, gangrene.

Ingrown Toenails

Calluses
Plantar warts appear as thick, scaly skin, with tiny black dots within the lesion. They may occur as small, single warts or as clusters referred to as mosaic warts, often resembling calluses. You can tell the difference by squeezing the lesion between your fingers. If it’s painful, it’s most likely a wart. Since plantar warts tend to occur on the balls or heels of your feet, they can be painful when standing or walking.
Fungus
In order to diagnose a fungal infection, a podiatrist will examine your foot and may take a small sample of the affected nail. Treatment for toenail fungus includes topical gels, creams, nail lacquers, or antifungal prescription medicine. Rarely does it require surgery. In any event, treatment can take a while since toenails grow slowly and tight fitting or damp shoes can encourage fungal growth.
Lesions
Ganglionic Cyst: These fluid-filled lesions can be drained in our office. Your Cincinnati foot and ankle care podiatrist will perform x-rays, and other necessary workup, recommending in office drainage versus excision of the cyst.

Physical Therapy
Physical therapy – For mild forms of hammertoe, a physical therapist can create a customized exercise plan to help stretch out the muscle in the affected toe. Specific exercise may include toe crunches, rolls, and squeezes designed to relieve cramping and straighten the toe.

One of the most common ankle injuries is an ankle sprain, a partial or complete ligament tear that results from sudden stretching. It can occur on either or both of the inner and outer portions of the ankle joint and more commonly occurs if there has been a previous injury or preexisting muscle weakness in the ankle.

Achilles Tendonitis
Achilles tendonitis is an overuse injury affecting the band of tissue that connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. It’s a common injury in runners and middle-aged “weekend warriors” who play sports. Symptoms include heel pain and tenderness. Treatment of Achilles tendonitis usually requires rest and pain relievers.
Ankle Instability
When these tendons become inflamed from an increased load and overuse, they rub against the bone, causing pain and swelling at the back of the ankle, along with ankle instability. Treatment for peroneal tendonitis includes immobilization with a walking boot, anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, and bracing.
Ankle Sprain
An acute ankle sprain is initially treated with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) to limit weight-bearing on the injured ankle and reduce swelling. Crutches may be recommended to prevent further trauma to the injured ligament. Anti-inflammatory medication can also reduce inflammation. However, more severe injuries may require a cast to immobilize the joint, surgical repair, and/or physical rehabilitation therapy.

Fungus Toenails
Toenail fungus is another matter. Infections usually occur in warm, wet environments when microscopic fungus enters the nail through a cut or break. The nail then thickens and appears discolored. Toenail fungus infections are more common among people over the age of 60, and it can be particularly dangerous for people with diabetes or weakened immune systems.
Hammertoes
Hammertoe is a deformity that causes a toe to bend at one of its joint. The condition most commonly affects the second toe on the foot. Whether hammertoe is caused by arthritis or ill-fitting shoes, it’s important to seek treatment once the condition becomes painful or interferes with your quality of life. Hammertoe deformity may worsen over time, and if not treated in the early stages, may require surgery.
