Fillings
In most cases, patients with a cavity will benefit from a filling. Our team shies away from older filling materials such as silver amalgam fillings, which have been found to leave patients exposed to mercury toxicity. Instead, we strongly advise patients to consider materials such as composite resin, which are not only safer and biocompatible but more aesthetic. In some situations, dental inlay and onlay restorations may better suit patients with large areas of decay. These restorations are made of porcelain and sit in or on the tooth. They are also made to match the tooth structure to appear practically invisible after being placed.
Resin Composite
During endodontic treatment, patients will undergo a surgical procedure designed to help them restore the health of a tooth. This procedure may be done due to a large cavity, trauma to a tooth, an abscess, or an infection inside the tooth. During the process, the dentist will access the inner canals of the tooth and remove the dental pulp, a mass of tissues that includes the nerves and blood supply that keep the tooth alive. The nerves also cause a sensation of pain in many patients who come in for this treatment. The dental pulp is removed before the area is thoroughly cleaned. Gutta-percha is used to seal the canals, and composite resin will seal the tooth. In many cases, the dentist may also place a dental crown over the tooth as it can become brittle, weak, and susceptible to further damage.
