Bad Experience - Lawry's

On 3/30/11 we went to Lawry's for dinner and a close to our four day trip to Chicago for my daughter's birthday. The evening started well enough with a warm greeting by the host and prompt - courteous service in the lounge. Unfortunately, that was the end of professional service. Our waitress was clearly disinterested in doing her job and in fact was useless in our desire to have a fine meal. She never asked if we wanted a drink - we had to slow her down to request a wine list. Never offered a side to the Prime Rib - we had to request a side lobster tail that arrived late. She never explained the horse radish tastes - she dropped it off an left. No smiles, completely rushed the process, lack of execution that you wouldn't experience at Denny's. To top it off the management, instead of apologizing defended the server and only offered ice cream for my two children - which comes with the meal. For 250 dollars for a family of four, kids 7 and 8, this was one of the most disappointing meals and lack of professional service we have every experienced. Skip this place and if you don't lay down the expectations at the door or you will be in for a bad evening.

Lawry's The Prime Rib

Our experience in one word ~ bad!
Upon arrival, the host seemed annoyed that we were approximately 15 minutes early for our reservation. Comments were exchanged as we were being directed to our table. I thought being a bit early would be well received, unfortunately, I was mistaken. Then our waitress was constantly interrupting our conversation, she had a snippy attitude and unfortunately, we could not understand what she was saying. I appauld her for learning English but a customer needs to understand what you are saying. We had to ask numerous times for her to repeat what she said. At the time, the dining room was not crowded ~ so, she needed to slow down her pace, in speaking and serving.
I understand that prime rib is not 'lean' as a filet ~ however, I am not exaggerating in saying the lean part of our prime rib was probably 2 inches in diameter. Horrible!
This was a birthday celebration and trust me, we will not go back to Lawry's!! Very expensive birthday dinner and came away very disappointed. We decided to give Lawry's another try after being disappointed 2 years ago. Obviously, we will not try a third time... some things never change.
Next celebration will be at Morton's or Gibson's... we have always enjoyed our dining experience at both places.

Superb

Best prime rib in the city without a doubt, been going there off and on for years (due to the price). I have no idea how people could give this place a bad review, its simply fantastic.

Go there during Christmas time and you'll never forget it!

go somewhere else for steak

I saw lawry's on the food network and i've wanted to go there for the prime rib for the longest time. i open the menu and you pretty much have no choice but to order the prime rib. we get the California cut knowing it would be the smallest cut but i figured for $34 it can't be that bad (they don't show you or describe what you are getting btw). I get a prime rib as thin as my pinky and mashed potato's that taste like it came from a box. i didn't even get a choice on the salad dressing they just bring you the spinning salad which is just a bowl in a bowl of ice. we were all so upset and eating our dinner feeling ripped off because we know we could have gotten a better steak anywhere else in chicago. in short WASTE OF YOUR TIME AND MONEY GO SOMEWHERE ELSE FOR A REAL STEAK

Wonderful Experience

I've been to a lot of steak places but I have to say never one like this. It's well lit, very elegant, not loud at all, and comfortable. While you might assume that a restaurant located inside a mansion with such elegant decor would have stuffy service it most certainly did not. Our waitress was friendly, out going, playful, but also knew her stuff and did her best to please all of us. Their uniforms are also fun. The spinning bowl salad was not only tasty but fun to watch them make, and while they do put a lot of dressing on it, it still tastes really good. The Prime rib was also wonderful and I love the fact that you have so many choices in size. Four of us went and we all got different sizes and everyone was happy with there's. I have the 5 oz and was impressed not only with the taste but with the fact that they offer such a reasonable size. My husband and I split the mixed mushrooms as a side and were very pleased. The mashed potato's were very good as well. And there signature desert of a chocolate hand bag with cream and berry's was so creative and different. All in all a wonderful experience, we'll definitely be going back.

LAZY STEAKHOUSE

ME AND MY BEST FRIEND TOOK OUR GIRLS FRIENDS OUT HERE, FOR V-DAY FOR A NICE DINING EXPERIENCE. Well when we got there we waited for a hour and 15 min. I thought the wait was to be expected since i heard it was a good place to eat and it was v-day after all. Let me tell u the place need to go out of business, for the terrible food i had to endour for the prices they have. the entry was the best..lol. the hard breadi ate that i had to put lots, and lots of butter to get it down. The salad was medicore i had better from the ready made salad you get from the grocery store. Then the mashed pudding they serve was like grawl they give prisoner. then the master chef came around with our steak. i just knew this would make up for everything else. Maybe he didnt like me or something but it was fatty steak i ever had no real lean meat. the taste was sorry for a restaurant that called themselves lawry the same people the make seasoning salt. they actually dont put any seasoning on there meat out all. The four of us left the place TICKED OFF. and ended up grabbing sum real food somewhere else to make up for the sorry excuse of a meal they attempt to make.AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST, DONT EVEN WASTE UR TIME,MONEY, OR PATIENT. Listen to the other reviews this place needs a major overall in the kitchen.

Waste of time and taste buds!

We wanted to celebrate our 10th anniversary with great food at a nice place. We absolutely chose the WRONG restaurant. Lawry's was a waste of our time, taste buds, and money. The prime rib was at best, average. The service was just pathetic. It took forever for the master chef to come to our table. Other tables were seated after us, but served and left before us. For a place that has prime rib as their specialty, they definately need help. You would be much better off going to any steakhouse and get the same quality prime rib for a whole lot less AND walk out with a full stomach (and were not big people so it doesn't take much to make us full). I agree with the other post that said the sides are like school cafateria food - plus it is $5 extra! The pre-dinner bread WAS the best part. If you truly want great prime rib, then you need to go to The Captain's Table in Custer, South Dakota. We were there 9 years ago and still remember every succulant bite. But, if you don't want to go that far, then go to Glenwood Oaks in Glenwood, IL. They are a very classy restaurant that has very good prime rib and it's a lot more reasonably priced. Bottom line - DON'T GO TO LAWRY""S! High prices DO NOT mean great food! There has to be a better place in Chicago for prime rib!!!

Bleck!

I lived in Chicago just a few yrs back and have gone to many upscale and pricey steakhouses there. Recently, I was back in Chicago on business and was taken to Lawry's. I'd never been there before, as we have other favorites we always patron. The steaks there were fatty and flavorless. --and the sides were absolutely disgusting. I hate leaving such a bad review of any restaurant. But, there's no way I could give it anything but a ""ONE"". The food was just gross. The service was nothing exciting. The ""ambience"" was nothing worth writing about and even worse three people from our party of 8 had ""intestinal problems"" that night!! Go to Kinzie's Chophouse or Gibsons...or Sullivan's....go anywhere but here.

Outstanding prime rib, great service, wonderful ambience

My wife and I were in the Chicago?s Schaumburg area for four days for a business conference. We had decided to stay over the week end in the Magnificent Mile area to enjoy the ambience of Chicago. We?d tried to get reservations to Harry Caray?s, but found they were totally booked.
I found Lawry?s website and did find an opening for dinner. Great choice!.

We arrived at Lawry?s 20 minutes before our reservation. After identifying ourselves, we were immediately whisked to a table...no waiting at all, even with a crowded saturday evening.
The food [we both had Lawry?s original prime rib] was excellent, as was the service, and atmosphere.

We highly recommend this establishment whenever one is in this area of Chicago.

Out of this World Prime Rib!

If you like Prime Rib, this is the place. Although they have expanded their menu over the years to now include Salmon, and even a fish of the day, the Specialty of the house is Prime Rib, and it lives up to its billing. When the waiter or waitress comes to take your order, unless you want one of the fish dishes, the only questions you will be asked are whether you would like a drink, an appetizer, and whether you want the spinning bowl salad. After you finish your salad, and any appetizer you may have ordered, they will come around with a cart holding the Prime Rib, along with the mashed potatos and optional sides. It is then you will be asked whether you want the English Cut, the Lawry's cut, or the "Diamond Jim Brady" cut. If you chooose the latter, you better have brought your appetite! When you ask for a particular temperature, you can be sure you will get what you want. You will also be given mashed potatoes and gravy, and Yorkshire pudding, and you may order options such as creamed spinach, peas, corn, or mushrooms. If you like Prime Rib, you cannot go wrong at Lawry's, if you don't like Prime Rib, you are at the wrong place!

Great Prime Rib and Lobster!

I was most recently there 6 weeks ago for my freinds birthday. The atmosphere is great, the restaurant is in an old mansion, it has a nice elegant feel. The dinner is like a little show. The server spins the salad, and the carver slices your Prime Rib to order. The creamed spinach and creamed corn are wonderful. I'm usually disappointed when I order Lobster, but theirs is some of the best I've had anywhere. For my friends birthday they came with a piece of cake with a candle and sang. Once in awhile you have to wait a bit past your reservation time, but not too long.

Over-rated

My boyfriend and I recently visited Lawry's for our Valentine's Day dinner. We both felt that the experience was below average. Although, we had reservations, when we arrived, we waited 30 minutes prior to being seated. The ambiance of the restaurant was great, so if that matters to you, more than the quality of the service and the food, you would love it. My boyfriend?s prime rib was extremely tough. He worked up a sweat while attempting to cut it. The best part of the actual meal was desert. We had the key lime cheesecake, we both loved it. This was the first time either of us had been to Lawry?s, which we expressed to our server upon arrival. We were both surprised by his unenthusiastic description of the menu and the restaurant. Prior to visiting Lawry?s, my boyfriend called the restaurant to ensure that my food allergies would be accommodated upon arrival. However, when we arrived they were not, which limited my options on the menu. If we would have known my allergies were not going to be accommodated, we would have selected a different restaurant. Lastly, the valet parking service was the worst we have ever experienced; extremely disorganized and rude. We both felt that the overall experience was one we could have gone without. I do not recommend this restaurant.

best prime rib in the world!

honestly, every morsel melts in your mouth. i have never found prime rib as good as theirs. absolutely delicious food and lots of choices. the ambiance is festive, quirky and opulent. it's a great date or special occasion spot. if anyone disagrees with me, they are a closet vegetarian.

Subpar meat, cheesy

Clearly a tourist trap because they can't possibly expect anyone to come back. The meat was fatty and not very tasty. The sides tasted like they were made for a school cafeteria. The waitress was very nice, but in general the service was cheesy. That was particularly unfortunate since they could have fantastic ambiance considering what a beautiful space they are working with. I went to the low end las tablas the night before and had better meat. If you're near mag mile and in the mood for good meat try Capital Grill or Keefers. If you really want prime rib the Chop House does a charred version that is MUCH better. Also had to wait for about 30 minutes despite having a reservation.

Worth a visit

It takes a special Yorkshire Pudding to make an Englishman smile, so I was pleased to find that the YP which comes with each dinner at Lawry's is a good one. The dining room is huge and busy, even on a Tuesday, so consider making a reservation. I was on business and alone so it didn't bother me much, but I imagine it's probably better for groups and talking shop than it is for special occasions, especially romantic ones. The Famous Spinning Bowl Salad was decent. The beef was flavorful and uncannily tender, but the potatoes and gravy were humdrum, while the $6.50 asparagus was slightly woody and close to the end of its time. I'd still recommend it though, as a good alternative for people who enjoy beef but balk at the eye-watering prices at the usual Chicago steakhouse.

Very good beef lovers excellent prime rib of beef

Loved the atmosphere and food. We went for lunch which was super inexpensive @15 a person including drink. We went back for a busiess dinner and it was great. The atmosphere is somewhere between romantic and an old mens club. There was 12 of us and we had a reservation so we were seated within 10 minutes. Just enough time for a quick cocktail. One note, when you go to an upscale restaraunt - pay for a babysitter. We kept our conversation down low but were not amused to have to hear a baby crying. Well mannered, trained children are fine. Babies don't eat prime rib and as the person who shelled out literally hundreds of dollars for the meal... I did not want to hear crying. Children belong at Dennys and Chuckie Cheese's not Lawry's.
I recommend a baked potato, creamed spinach and that you skip dessert altogether... you will be too full. For the small eaters... food is ala cart and the servings are more than enough for 2. We ordered prime rib, no bone, and shared a potato, salad, and peas. We walked it off and managed to split a cheesecake at the cheesecake factory later. Chicago downtown - mag mile is very nice in the summer.
