Glaucoma, has been called the “sneak thief of sight” because vision is lost before the patient even notices that there is anything wrong. Glaucoma is a chronic progressive disease characterized by specific damage to the optic nerve rim. Optic nerve damage leads to permanent loss of peripheral vision and if left inadequately managed, blindness. The only way to slow glaucoma progression is by controlling eye pressures.

Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the United States. While the exact cause is not known, advancing age is the most common risk factor. People with a family history of macular degeneration, blue eyes, cardiovascular disease and those who smoke are also at higher risk.
Laser Eye Surgery
Laser eye surgery is the most popular elective procedure performed in healthy eyes to decrease your dependence on glasses or contact lenses. It is an effective, safe and predictable method for correcting nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. This surgical technique was approved in the United States in 1991 – we are approaching 25 years of experience in PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) and LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis).
Cataracts
The lens of the eye is similar to the lens of a camera. Light rays are processed through the lens and focused on the retina, which lines the back of the eye. When a cataract forms, the lens becomes cloudy and prevents the retina from clearly registering what you see.

Fortunately, surgery to remove a cataract will restore all vision lost as a result of a progressive cataract. Cataract surgery is very successful and one of the most common procedures performed in the United States. The timing of when to have surgery is a personal one. Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is the most common manifestation of diabetic eye disease. It is caused by damage to the walls of the blood vessels in the retina. There are two types of retinopathy: background diabetic retinopathy and proliferative diabetic retinopathy. In general, vision remains good in background retinopathy. Sometimes retinopathy causes vision loss because of swelling of the retinal tissue, known as macular edema.

MRI
A small titanium device is implanted in the ocular drainage system to increase aqueous humor outflow through the system and lower eye pressure. The iStent® is implanted at the same time as cataract surgery. It is the smallest implantable medical device available. Once it is inserted, you will not be able to feel or see the device. It is MRI safe.
