Founded in 1979, the Missouri Department of Transportation is responsible for the construction and maintenance of roads and highways. It operates and manages more than 32,000 miles of highway throughout Missouri. The department cooperates and coordinates various programs for the development and improvement of airports, rail facilities, ports and transit systems. It additionally designs and constructs bridges, as well as administers and manages waterways and related transportation systems. The department conducts pollution reporting, safety awareness, economic impact analysis, and highway and bridge naming programs. It offers civil engineering, roadside vegetation management, airport safety inspection, technical assistance and planning services. The Missouri Department of Transportation is governed by the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission.
