My son has been attending Leadership Martial Arts. We have seen an improvement in his confidence and ability to follow directions. All of the leaders there are all about teaching every person in class and ensuring they get what is being taught. There is no long term contract or agreements. You do not pay for promotion but just for your new belt when you take a test. Sensei Derek and his team make classes fun. They have divided up the belts by skill level and with the class schedule it is easy to make class every week. They teach not only Martial arts but also Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Leadership Martial arts. We have seen so much improvement in our son that we would recommend this place to anyone who can get their.
A true old school traditional dojo. Just like back in Japan. I was impressed by the authenticity. And the humbleness of the instructor, and the atmo…

This past Saturday, I watched their annual Kick Out Cancer (8+ years going strong!), this year benefiting the Isabella Santos Foundation. Everyone who participated had a wonderful time and were genuinely interested in making a difference in the lives of children fighting cancer. The Richardson family make everyone involved feel like family. I want to personally thank them for being so involved in the community!! Looking forward to next year!
Traditional dojo with a welcoming atmosphere. I started adult classes recently after about 6 months of practice in another style. Baker Sensei was very welcoming and patient, as were all the seniors and other students. If you are interested in learning a martial art for fitness and/or self-defense, Charlotte Shotokan Karate is a great place to start.
Sensei Derek is amazing!! I have three boys in his classes ages ranging from 4-8 and I have seen amazing improvements in them. Our family homeschools so we where looking for a program to get the kids in to meet other kids get some exercise and to learn physical instruction. This has fit the bill for that and more. The classes are fun for my kids they can not wait for the next class. They have been learning a lot about Black Belt Manners and Black Belt Attitudes and it is amazing to see how my kids are using them outside of class. Also if you are looking for a place to have a great Birthday Party then you can not beat the party that Leadership Martial Arts puts on. My kids now want to just have Karate Birthdays because they are so much fun and it is so easy on us the parents as we do not have to do any of the work for the party! All in all Leadership Martial Arts really lives up to its name as I can see my little guys are learning how to be real Leaders.
Great place to train! Great Instructors with years of experience! I have taken classes with the head instructor and owner and had nothing but a first class experience.
A true old school traditional dojo. Just like back in Japan. I was impressed by the authenticity. And the humbleness of the instructor, and the atmosphere. A real pleasure.
Stay away! They implement physical discipline without your consent or knowledge. My kids hated every second and I now know why once this all came to fruition. They also promise wonderful things such as field trips and great care for your kids (for summer camp). They went on one field trip all summer (even though you have a $15 activity fee each week-for what?). You pay extra for so much in top of tuition as well.Stay away!
Excellent class at Carolina Tai Chi Institute at True Buddha Temple! I have been searching for a school like this.
This organization makes its members sign a 3 year contract that needs to be disclosed in larger print. We signed the contract thinking it was similar to other sports where our child could take a break after so many months. So be advised it’s not that kind of organization. For example once summer break begins and trips to the grandparent’s house begins, they still charge your credit card and expect your child to be in class. Once school starts back up imagine your child wanting to play another sport and having to juggle school, karate (two nights a week to make it worth it), and then participate in the other sport. We were very disappointed and unaware that we were signing up for one activity for three years, unfair and not reasonable. They do however let you out the contract if you change addresses outside of any 25 ATA Karate locations but make you pay $50. So imagine you have lost your job, and need to move, it will cost you another $50. I hope some person with the time, and money comes along to illustrate that the contract is not enforceable and unfair. This is karate for children not a mortgage for a house. I think dishonesty however is the foundation of their program. They get you to buy peripherals, and decide to have belt promotions which cost $60 each, even when it does not seem they are ready for a new belt!Just making sure others do not make the same mistake we did. Not sure if all karate places are the same, but I would shop around.
I wish I was a better writer, to be able to explain how much I respect Leadership Martial Arts Academy and all they stand for. Sensei Derek Richardson doesn't only teach top notch martial arts, but, I loved how he has instilled discipline, respect, courtesy and teamwork into the students. I am a lifelong martial artist and I do not give recommendations lightly as I am pretty critical. But, I give this place 5 stars, two thumbs up and a high five. I cannot wait for the next chance to get on the mats. :-) If you are in the Steele Creek area and looking for martial arts, you need to go here first.
