It is very important to have a trusting relationship with your surgeon, as well as realistic expectations when considering blepharoplasty. The surgeon should perform a full pre-operative ophthalmic evaluation to rule out underlying eye disease. Glaucoma may also produce a superior visual field defect and must be ruled out. The tear film should be properly evaluated to avoid post-operative dry eye symptoms. In addition, the surgeon should distinguish between excess eyelid tissue and ptosis, a weakness in the levator muscle of the upper eyelid, which requires a full medical evaluation for the underlying cause and possible surgical repair or lifting of the muscle. Often, additional cosmetic procedures to remove fine lines and wrinkles are needed to restore a more youthful appearance and should be discussed prior to surgery. With summer FINALLY here, you need to protect your body from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. UVA rays have been associated with cataracts and macular degeneration. UVB is associated with skin damage leading to premature aging and skin cancer. Be aware that not all designer sunglasses block ultraviolet rays. When shopping for sunglasses, look for glasses that block 100% of UV rays. UV exposure is also linked to the formation of pterygia and pinguecula, which can cause significant eye irritation as well as an unsightly appearance (no pun intended!)
Laser Eye Surgery
The Intralase (a femtosecond laser) is used to create a corneal flap, exposing the internal layers of the cornea, much like opening a book. The customvue excimer laser then gently reshapes the exposed cornea. When the flap is replaced, the surface assumes the new curvature that is necessary to correct your vision. The flap is stable within minutes and is healed by the next morning. LASIK is an extremely effective outpatient procedure that is suitable for a wide range of prescriptions; nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
