Excellent place for special cuts of meat and premium produce and cheese. The Fresh Market (TFM) brand coffee is fantastic and a great value...free samples available all day, every day. Nice selection of bulk nuts, grains and candies. Good wine corner. Not a place to do stock-up shopping because you'll pay way too much for basic supplies, paper products, snacks, etc. because The Fresh Market is not about the basics. They carry them just for convenience and not their specialty. Nice atmosphere - clean, relaxing music, plenty of room for your cart, etc.

They have a great meat department, and pretty good fresh veggies, but the surly and uncaring employees make shopping here unpleasant. The green shopping baskets are always filthy, and on a recent visit there were flies on the inside of the individual muffin display, and at least 20 containers of Noosa yogurt were more than 5 days out of date. You can never find a manager, and no one ever asks if you had a good shopping experience.
At the meat, grocery and bakery counters, staff never greet you with a smile (and often let you stand there for a while without making eye contact).
One day I stood at the bakery case for several minutes while an employee was just standing around in the back and surely saw me. Finally she came to the counter and asked if I needed help. I was tempted to say ""no, I'm just admiring the desserts."" Then she put my cupcake in a too-small box and squished all the frosting. When I asked for another in larger container she gave me a dirty look and said that's all she had. So I bought nothing.
At the meat counter, they only want you to choose from steaks on the top row. If you ask to see one on the bottom row they give you a dirty look. When I'm paying $19 a pound for a filet, I'd like to choose it. Other meat markets cheerfuly do this, and usually help you make a selection.
In the wine dept, there are many bottles without a price sign. Don't know why they go the trouble of making an attractive display without any price shown.
Checkout is never a breeze, either, as they seldom have enough cashiers open. Although I will say that the checkout staff is courteous, unlike the rest of the employees in the store.
Come on, Fresh Market, step it up a notch. Your store is convenient, but you're going to lose business if you don't clean up your act.

I was surprised by this high priced market's relatively poor sanitation rating in their deli section -- a 90.5 last I checked. In comparison, the deli at the Harris Teeter I go to has a rating of 101. They also don't list the ingredients of their salads and other items the way Whole Foods does. And, the checkout lines are usually longer than I would like.

It's unfortunate that one of the best places to find a good cut of meat also brings forth some of the most unfriendly people I've met in my vast experience with customer service. Again and again I encounter some of the rudest people behind the meat counter and as late as yesterday was greated with a friendly, ""yeah?"" from the deli department. I was hoping she was just continuing her conversation with another person behind the counter but nope, this was her way of saying, ""hello, how may I help you""? Wow! But this is only one example of my experiences with their service. The meat department remains one of the most obnoxious places I visit in my shopping experiences. Rolling of the eyes, yelling at their customers like we are cattle and then being less than helpful when asked to cut meat, etc. I will continue to look for an alternate place that leaves me feeling better about my experience after I leave.
