Since its inception in 1950, Abrams EyeCare Associates has been specializing in providing its patients with medical and surgical eye care in central Indiana. Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve of your eye. It typically happens when fluid builds up in the front part of the eye. This extra fluid increases pressure in the eye, damaging the optic nerve.
Ophthalmology
The practice of Lashmet, Spitzberg and Denny became Lashmet, Spitzberg, Denny and Abrams in 1988. This practice had offices in Carmel and the westside of Indianapolis. A midtown (downtown Indianapolis) office was added at Methodist Hospital when Dr. John Abrams joined the group. Dr. Bettye-Jo Rawls Lloyd joined the group in 1995 and the practice was renamed Indianapolis Ophthalmology. After the senior partner retirements of Lashmet and Denny, and the departure of Spitzberg, Abrams EyeCare Associates was formed. Abrams EyeCare Associates has grown to 3 offices, 7 doctors and over 45 employees. Dr. JJ Abrams joined the practice in 2005 and remained at Abrams EyeCare Associates for 15 years until his retirement in 2020. His career in Optometry spanned 70 years. The practice had 3 generations of eye care providers working together for 3 years.
Macular Degeneration
A referral is not necessary to schedule an appointment with one of our doctors. However it can be helpful if you need to be scheduled for a severe eye condition such as Glaucoma or Macular degeneration or seek surgical treatment.
Laser Eye Surgery
LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure permanently changing the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using a laser.

Laser Relaxing Incisions and YAG Capsulotomy A cataract is when your eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy. This occurs when proteins in your lens break down and cause things to look blurry, hazy or less colorful.

He has been voted by physician peers as a Top Doctor in general ophthalmology and cataract surgery every ranking year since 1998. He has authored many articles on ophthalmology topics and presented at numerous professional meetings throughout the country. Dr. Abrams was the recipient of the "40 Under 40" award by the Indianapolis Business Journal for outstanding accomplishments in his profession at a young age.
Eye Exam
Damar Services: Damar is a leading provider of services to people with developmental, behavioral, and intellectual disabilities. Abrams EyeCare has established the JJ Abrams Eye Examination Suite in memory of Dr. JJ Abrams ' years of commitment and dedicated service to Damar residents. We continue JJ's work there by performing onsite eye examinations. In 2022, Dr. Abrams and Abrams EyeCare received the Remarkable Partner award for our provision of eye exams to the residents of Damar.

Multiple Sclerosis
Regardless of your age or physical health, a comprehensive eye exam is important for detecting any eye problems at their early stages. Even if you have 20/20 vision, an eye exam can be a measure of overall health. The eyes are the only part of the body where arteries and veins can be viewed without having to perform surgery. Eyecare providers can see signs of stroke, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis and more, through an eye exam. In addition, they can determine whether a person with age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa or cataracts is suffering also from low vision, which is a condition associated with these age-related eye diseases. Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease that affects people who have diabetes. The condition occurs when high blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in the retina.

Ultrasound
Traditional Cataract Surgery Phacoemulsification, which is traditional cataract surgery, is one of the most common eye surgeries. The procedure begins with the surgeon creating a small incision in the cornea with a scalpel. A small instrument is then inserted through the slot and behind the pupil, where the eye's lens rests in a capsule. The surgeon then creates a small round opening in the capsule and inserts a probe that applies sound waves, or ultrasound, to break up the cloudy lens. The broken-up pieces are then suctioned out and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The incision is self-healing and usually does not require stitches.
