Infectious Diseases
Preexisting Conditions — Women who have certain preexisting conditions may be considered high-risk. It is important to fully disclose health history so that you can be assessed as high-risk. This can include autoimmune disorders, seizure disorders, heart disease, or infectious diseases.

• Vaccination history: Bring a list of all vaccinations. Many vaccines cannot be given during pregnancy so preparing early can ensure that all vaccines are current. For example, MMR, varicella, and hepatitis vaccines must be given outside of pregnancy.

“I received my undergraduate degree in engineering. But then, in my early twenties, I began to have questions about my own body as a female, which led me to start thinking about becoming a doctor so I could do something significant to affect change in women. I decided to go into osteopathic medicine because it appealed to me from my engineering side — to be able to understand the body mechanics and fluidity of the entire body. When I decided to specialize in obstetrics, I knew I had found my purpose.
Endometriosis
Intrauterine insemination occurs when a large amount of healthy sperm are inserted in the uterus at the time of ovulation. It is often used in conjunction with ovulation induction. IUI is commonly used for unexplained infertility. It is also used for couples affected by mild endometriosis, problems with ovulation, mild male factor infertility and infertility related to cervical factors.

Labor and Delivery
Taylor Battaglia is a Registered Nurse and Certified Nurse Midwife who helps women through the birthing process by delivering babies at Northside Hospital Cherokee. Taylor used midwives during the births of her children and also served as a doula in her community. She enjoys providing supportive care throughout pregnancy and into labor and delivery.

Ovarian Cancer
Cervical Cancer
In the past several years, a breakthrough in medicine has provided a way to fight back and prevent cervical cancer. High-risk HPV strains including 16 and 18 have been associated with the majority of cervical cancers. Other HPV strains including 6 and 11 are associated with genital warts or growths on the vulva, cervix or penis. The Guardisil vaccine provides patients a way to actively protect themselves from these four strains of viruses. Additionally, the Cervarix vaccine will protect against the two strains that cause cervical cancer. It is recommended for male and female individuals between the ages of 9 and 26. These vaccinations protect young men and women before there are exposed during sexual activity. Most insurance companies, including Medicaid, will pay for the vaccine. (If you don’t have medical insurance, there are still ways to pay for the vaccine. Talk to your healthcare provider about your options.)

Ultrasound
A complete physical exam is the first and most important step in cancer prevention. Advanced ultrasound imaging serves as an additional tool in detecting or ruling out cancer when you have physical symptoms, including pain or bleeding. Cherokee Women’s offers advanced ultrasound services in both trans-vaginal and three-dimensional ultrasound imaging, and we’re on the select list of practices fully accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine for Obstetric and Gynecologic ultrasound.
Chemotherapy
Primary ovarian insufficiency – The condition when your ovaries no longer produce eggs is called premature ovarian failure. It can be caused by an autoimmune response or by premature loss of eggs from your ovary, possibly because of genetics or chemotherapy.

Vasectomy
Vasectomy – A surgical procedure for men in which a doctor cuts and seals off the two tubes that allow sperm to travel outside the body.
Robotic Surgery
Dr. Z received her medical education at Florida State University (FSU) College of Medicine, after completing her undergraduate work at FSU, where she graduated Cum Laude. She completed her residency training at WellStar Kennestone Medical Center and has training and experience in robotic surgery.
Reconstructive Surgery
Cherokee Women’s Health is unique among OB/GYN practices in the Southeast, with three OB/GYNs double board-certified in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS, also known as urogynecology). Because of this, our practice is a resource of expertise on a wide range of women’s health issues. In 2018, patients from 27 states visited Cherokee Women’s Health.

Laparoscopic Surgery
During residency, Dr. Litrel studied minimally invasive reconstructive laparoscopic surgery at the Advanced Laparoscopic Training Center, and upon completion of his surgical training, he joined the highly respected surgeon Dr. James Cross in private practice in 1997. He worked under his mentorship for eight years until Dr. Cross’s retirement in 2005.
Cosmetic Surgery
Dr. Litrel is in private practice, and is also a Clinical Professor at both Emory University School of Medicine and Medical College of Georgia. He trains doctors in the techniques he has developed in genitoplastic and pelviplastic surgery, with a book in progress documenting this area of his specialty. Certified by both the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) and the Cellular Medicine Association (CMA), Dr. Litrel is authorized to deliver the O-Shot®.
