My hair has been chemical-free since June 2000 and have been “Happily Nappy” ever since. Despite my love for my natural, I sometimes desired a temporary change where I could wear my hair in a “straightened” style – all the while leaving my natural texture unaltered. I went to a couple of hair “stylists” and got some very disappointing results – hair that was “straightened”, but look dry, dull, and lifeless. I had all but given up on the notion until a good friend of mine recommended Portia’s services. I decided to take the plunge once again and see what she was about. At the time, I was also transitioning my daughter’s hair away from Creamy Crack (I know….what in the WORLD was I thinking putting that stuff in her hair in the FIRST place). The resulting look and feel of both our hair (mine fully natural, my daughter’s “transitioning” and in-between) was PHENOMENAL. My hair type typically has a difficult time not sucking up all of the moisture in the air and “reverting”. After Portia’s skilled hands, my hair was having NONE of that. I had even gone through two “misty” days without a hitch. On the 10th day after my “silk-out”, my hair still looked so jazzy, I snapped a photo of it and texted it to family and friends. Unfortunately, I generally don’t worry much about umbrellas since I just let my natural hair do what it does. This umbrella-neglect is the ONLY reason my style didn’t last more than 10 days - right after I snapped my picture, I got caught in a full-fledged rainstorm heading home. The health and thickness of my daughter’s transitioning hair shined through after Portia did her magic. After our first, post-Portia at-home “wash-n-twist”, my daughter’s hair was more manageable with less tangles and discomfort. My hair (thankfully) coiled right back up into its normal watch spring-sized pattern allowing me to return to my every day wash-n-twist routine – only this time with added shine, better twist memory, and WAY more movement (woohoo!). As an added benefit, the knowledge that Portia imparted to me during our visit on how to care for both my daughter’s and my hair helped me to not only explore more techniques for natural styles at home, but also helped me to fully transition my daughter’s hair to its current, healthy, 100% natural state. Fellow BeautySeeker, know this: if you are transitioning from relaxer, Portia’s techniques and training can help you become more comfortable with the natural state of your burgeoning crown of glory; if you are already a full-fledged 100% “natural” girl who feels uncomfortable with the idea of straightening your locks, Portia will remind you of the shear versatility your hair affords and help you divine your inner Hair Diva – without the weave, without the relaxer, and without disturbing your natural coils. Two snaps and a twirl, Portia!

Portia, does an excellent job of not only doing my hair but educating me on how to maintain its natural & healthy state. She offers classes for you and your daughter to teach you one-on-one how to take care of and style your daughters hair and even your own hair. Did I mention she does a great job on coloring my hair. People are always complimenting me on how beautiful my color is. What I most like about getting my hair done at Hair is She is the personal service I receive, she only focuses on one client at a time. I have never had to wait longer than 15 minutes. . I am usually in and out within a hour depending on the service I am getting but no more than an hour and half. I promise you won't be disappointment with the service and professionalism you will experience at Hair is She.
Portia has raised the bar for the hair salon experience. Her skill set, knowledge and dedication are an unparalleled trifecta. Here are just a few reasons why Portia is super special: 1. She only takes ONE hour for typical appts 2. She can cut AND color short hair too 3. She does not need to bog your hair down with product to straighren and control it 4. She gives you a customized boutique experience each time 5. You can really switch back and forth between curly natural and straight natural because her process does not ruin your natural curl pattern I am extremely busy and travel often. Portia never fails to tweak my hair for the business, social or civic obligation I am attending.
Portia has been styling and caring for my hair since 2003. She never overbooks her clients so your hair appointment time is yours. That is one of the reasons I keep coming back in addition to the great hair care she gives. I have not been able to find any stylist that can straighten my natural hair without causing heat damage or putting gunky hair spray to hold the curls. I currently live in Los Angeles and literally fly back to Atlanta to get my hair styled. It is soft, bouncy, and beautiful every time I leave Hair is She Salon. Thanks Portia!!! You Rock!
everyday some one is always coming up to me giving me a business card about wanting to do my dreads. they have very lil information they can give me on how to wear it healthfully. i found mr. bornu on google just looking for products for natural dreadlocks. i ordered the products, he even added a lil extra essential oil per my request. i picked them up at his salon and was amazed at the decor and customer service. a real chill dude and he knows his stuff. be wary, he has an extensive vocabulary so read a book or two before coming. lol
I've been going to Portia for the past.....6 years. That includes me going out of town for years...and flying back JUST to get my hair done. I've always been natural/straightened my hair..and let's just say my hair texture is 'different'...so I'm oh so fortunate to have someone able to achieve the bouncy/straight/soft hair that I've always wanted. I would recommend Portia to anyone looking to go natural or is currently seeking a specialist to achieve healthy hair.
I've been going to Hair Is She for years and I can't speak more highly about the salon, my stylist Portia, and my overall satisfaction with her services. The quality of the service is outstanding - I have yet to find a place or stylist who tops it. My hair is healthy AND looks great. Another thing that I love is how my time is valued. Lengthy waits are never a problem. I'm usually in and out in an hour. Do I need to say more? Check her out - you'll be glad you did.
I'm Bornu, Atlanta's natural hair-locking aficionado. Please visit my website & browse my array of products made exclusively for locking, conditioning and moisturizing natural hair. You can also go online to book a date/time for a salon appointment. Consults are not necessary but if you insist please schedule one by going to my calendar, click on the day you wish to come in and follow the prompts. Thanks.
Loved this place!!! It is huge. I guess you can say they earned a customer for life. The prices are cheap. The hair is real virgin hair. I ordered hair online 3pm realized they were in my city . I called to see if I could come pick it up, they told me it already shipped. I got it the next day. I ordered 26" and went to the store the next day to get another because I didnt order enough. Loved them.
