Primary Care
Patients who have had a positive COVID-19 test or have been exposed to COVID-19 should notify their primary care provider and registration staff before presenting for care. If the treatment, test or procedure is still required and the ten days have not passed since onset of symptoms, positive test, or exposure, or the patient is still symptomatic, the patient must wear a minimum level of surgical mask when seeking care. Additional precautions may be required.

Family Practice
Our patients are provided compassionate care through a team of board certified internal and family medicine physicians, including BCMH staff physician Benjamin Crary, DO, FAAFP. A compassionate care visitor may be able to stay with a patient around the clock (24 hour attendance) when reasonably appropriate. There are some restrictions when there are special conditions or circumstances for a patient or within a department. If you are unsure, please contact the Nursing unit caring for the patient before you visit. For the inpatient floor, call 660-200-7090, and for the emergency department, call 660-200-7050.

Flexible sigmoidoscopy enables the doctor to see only the sigmoid colon. The sigmoid colon is the last one-third of the colon. The colon absorbs nutrients and water and forms stool. A colonoscopy allows the doctor to see the entire colon.

Gynecology
Ultrasound is an excellent non-invasive method for examining organs such as the gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, liver and pancreas. It may also be used to evaluate major blood vessels such as the aorta or the blood vessels to an organ. Ultrasound is utilized extensively in abdominal and pelvic imaging including obstetrics/gynecology. Venous, carotid and extremity vascular studies are also routinely performed by our registered diagnostic medical sonographers with advanced vascular certification.

Steelworkers top off the hospital’s latest addition with a crossbeam signed by members of the community. The project began in 2001 and was completed in 2003. The expansion added a second floor for obstetrics, medical/surgical and critical care units. The obstetrics unit closed in 2009, and the space was converted to a surgical clinic.

Endoscopy is the medical technique of looking inside the body for any signs of disease or abnormality using a long, flexible tube equipped with a camera. The tube is inserted into the body and the camera transmits images to a monitor where the physician is able to evaluate what is seen. The tip of the endoscopy tube can be equipped with medical tools to take cells or tissue samples, stop bleeding and perform other medical procedures.

Stress Echocardiogram – Ultrasound of the heart, before and after walking on the treadmill. Uses sound waves to make a moving picture of your heart.
MRI
An MRI is a non-invasive procedure which uses radio waves and powerful magnets to create clear and detailed pictures of internal organs and tissues without the use of radiation. The exam generates images that assist the physician in making the best diagnosis possible, sometimes eliminating the need for biopsy or surgery.

The Bates County Memorial Hospital Imaging Services Department (radiology) offers a variety of specialized procedures and diagnostic tests provided by registered, qualified staff. BCMH has committed to investing in imaging equipment and radiologic technologists so we can provide a full range of imaging services for our community.

Nuclear Medicine
A nuclear medicine scan is another tool physicians use to look inside the body. It provides an image that evaluates organ function and locates disease or tumors. The primary purpose of a nuclear medicine scan is to show the function of the organ or tissue being evaluated to determine if the organ is working properly. A nuclear medicine scan can also show the size, shape and position of the organ being scanned.
Mammography
Breast health is an ongoing concern at Bates County Memorial Hospital. The hospital has been a leader in the advancement of mammographic technique with the purchase of the Hologic Selenia Dimensions 3D Mammography unit. We also utilize Computer-Aided Detection (CAD), a computer generated program that provides a second look after the radiologist performs an initial assessment. The use of these technologies enables us to diagnose very small cancers at the earliest stages.
Computed Tomography
A CT, sometimes called a CAT scan, is one of the most useful diagnostic examinations available and allows for the visualization of organs, bones and blood vessels. It is especially useful because it can show several types of tissue – lung, bone, soft tissue and blood vessels. A rotating X-ray device and advanced computer create detailed cross-sectional images of regional anatomy. Radiologists can examine the body one slice at a time. This makes it possible to diagnose cancers, heart disease, infection, trauma, and muscle or bone disorders. Most CT scans are performed as outpatient procedures. The scanner looks like a large donut with a narrow table in the middle. Once the exam begins, the table moves slowly into the round opening of the CT scanner.

Endoclipping uses endoclips which are small metallic devices used to treat bleeding lesions such as ulcers, vascular malformations and perforations or fistulas. The clips are delivered through an endoscope, and once deployed remain in place for several days to weeks. The clips eventually detach and pass undetected in the stool.
