I recently booked a party at The Chocolate Bar to celebrate a good friend's milestone birthday. The reservations themselves took over a week to make due to the difficulty reaching a manager who could book the event for me. After finally reaching the owner, it was made clear to me that he did not want our group simply taking up seats in the restaurant on a Saturday night. He wanted to ensure that he would make money off of us. I assured him that our group is comprised of women who frequent fine dining establishments and we would be purchasing appetizers, main courses, desserts and drinks.
When we arrived at the restaurant that evening, they had crammed our place settings into one booth and one small round table - for 15 people. These would have been appropriate accommodations for 8 to 10 diners, perhaps..but not a group as large as ours. We were then told that the cake we brought in (again, I booked the event well ahead of time and made it clear that it was a birthday party) could not be served in their establishment, since they serve desserts. If we wanted to eat our cake, we would have to pay a $7/person fee - equaling $105!! A small fee would have been acceptable, but this we found ridiculous. Remember, we estimated spending at least $500 that night as it was. The staff made it clear to us that they would rather lose our business entirely than lower the cake cutting fee. So we left that night, taking our cake, and wallets with us. Had a much nicer evening at Darcy McGees as a result. Will never return to The Chocolate Bar after the treatment my friends and I received that night.

Went to the Chocolate bar for the first time in a few months and was thrilled with the new menu, our waiter, was extremely helpful with our choices on the new menu, the suggestions he made were perfect, and the crabcakes might have been some of the best I have ever had and my husband loved the steak blt, nothing like steak and bacon. Only drawback is the deserts seemed like they were thawed out from being frozen, not fresh as I remember. Would be 5 stars but the desert brought it down
Went over the weekend to this restaurant with my wife, we have frequented it once a month or so the past year. We started going for the excellent deserts, but have seen the food improve over the past year, which has given us another reason to go. The service has always been a mixed bag, some servers care and some don't. Problem was this last visit the cheesecake we got was very ordinary at best. We miss the round cheesecakes that were served before that gave us more of the homemade feeling then these slices that seem very institutionalized. I hope this is just a temporary change, and not the sign of things to come to one of our favorite desert stops.

Been going to the Chocolate Bar for 2 years, and finally, they have brought in Food to match the Martini's and Deserts. We had the Crab Cakes and Paella and both were excellent, and saw that they have new specials other then salads and sandwiches in the evening. Gives me and my girlfriends more of a reason for going now.
They need to bring the wait staff up to par with the food, deserts and drinks

The Chocolate Bar is definitely one of my favorite places to go in Buffalo. Owned by Butterwoods Desserts, it's the perfect spot for a date or a night out with friends. Each time I've been there, I've recieved prompt service (though there may be a brieft wait to be seated during evening hours on the weekends), and the servers themselves have always been very personable and polite. The atmosphere is trendy yet laid-back, giving Chocolate Bar a bit of a lounge feel, and is far more classy and mature of a scene than other destinations on Chippewa Street. But most importantly: The dessert menu! The desserts are absolutley incredible; you can't go wrong with anything on that menu. Not to mention the tasty drinks, for example, ""Rasberry Truffle,"" ""Wedding Cake"" and ""Swedish Fish"" Martinis, or the ""Dirty Girls Scout"" (a thin-mint flavored milkshake with liquor), among many others. There is also a lunch/dinner menu, with salads, paninis, and sandwichs. Give Chocolate Bar a try next time you are planning on heading ""downtown""... I highly reccommend it!!
