anchor bar...a dying legend

i personally have family who worked at the anchor bar back in the glory days when wings were new and everything was great. i took some friends to eat there and the waitress even told us that duffs wings beat them in a taste test cuz their wings werent cooked all the way. needless to say we still ordered the wings but ate them very slowly checking for pink parts. the wings are good. and thats it. its not an award winning receipe and u can buy the wing sauce at tops. that cant be a good sign. my brother in law makes better wing sauce. all in all the dining room lakes imigination and could use some serious cleaning and the bartenders are so slow and rude. i do not recommend this place. go to duffs instead.

Still fun to take out of town guests

It may be showing its age, but it's still great to eat the original Buffalo wings, and it's always fun to take friends here when they visit from out of town. I kind of like the simplicity of the place. It's a bit like some of the old NYC places I ate. Service could be a little faster, but it's still a unique place with its own low key charm.

I loved it!

My husband is really big on chicken wiings so I took him there for our anniversary! He liked the wings and I got the anchor bites! I loved them! We got the broccoli and cheddar bites as an app and they were great! Will go there again!

sorry people

if you are thinking about doing an online order. DONT DO IT. this is the most rude place and people i have ever spoke to. i placed an order online close to a $100 and never got any of it. when i tried to get in contact with them it took about 4 to 6 days for anybody would return my call. then when they did they said they never got the order. i said i am holding a copy of the ticket do yo want me to fax it to you. then the guy flipped out and said he would get some one to call me back and he never did. i call nobody will return a call. this is the worst place i have ever delt with. i will never try to order anything again.

Great wings - very small

I know this is the original. And my Italian heritage won' t let me say anything negative about the birthplace of the best culinary contribution from upstate NY but... The wings are crisp and excellent but ridiculously small. I actually was able to try Duff's out the same night because they were so small. You have to make the trip to pay homage to the birthplace of wingdom.

good wings, not so good service

My friends and I came all the way from the other side of the country for "The most famous chicken wings". The food was good but the service was horrible. After we were waiting about an hour for the seats, they put us in a small stuffy room with the Latin Band playing music. The music was so loud that we can't even talk to each other. We were there for the food and companies not a concert!! We'd asked the Manager to move us and he said that we have to go wait outside for another hour to be seated again. Three groups of people had left the restaurant because of loudness. I work for the Airlines and normally carry earplugs in my bags...thank God for that!! My friends had to used the napkins to plug his ears.

Anchor Bar--good wings in a noteworthy restaurant

My family loves to eat at the Anchor Bar, which consistently provides great service, especially for children. The wings are awesome--I always bring out-of-town friends here and they are always impressed! It's always busy when we eat here, whether for lunch or dinner. I find the servers to be very attentive and the wings (I like my crispy, extra hot), are very good.

Avoid on any night, especially if it's snowing!!

First off, as a local resident, If you want chicken wings, go to DUFFS!!! Secondly, they are frauds. They stole the idea from a small African-American restaurant on Jefferson Avenue which received none of the credit or the glory. Last but not least, during a surprise snow storm back on November 20, 2000, this place tossed everybody out so they could close for the night. Businesses all over the city were taking in stranded motorists and pedestrians and putting them up for the night. The Anchor Bar couldn't be bothered!

way over-rated

There's about 16 places with better buffalo wings than this old shrine to fried food. Go to La Nova or Duff's or your corner pizza place and you'll be far happier.

Don't waste your time.

Location isn't worth the time it takes to get there.

Original Home of the Buffalo Chicken Wings

We went to this restaurant recently after not having been here for years and I was pleasantly surprised to find the quality of the food is still as good as it was 30 years ago. The place is bigger than before and busier than ever. Don't miss this little part of history if you visit Buffalo, NY

We lvoed it. Wings were great!

We visited this place, obviously due to the fame behind it, while in town for a Bills game a few years ago. We sat at the bar, had a few beers and some wings. I thought they were great and had no problems with the staff as other have suggested. Maybe we lucked out, who knows. We'll find out though as we are heading there again this football season.

Take a picture and move on

walking into this place may be neat because it IS the birthplace of Buffalo Wings BUT you will be better off turning around and go to ANY of the HUNDREDS of other restaurants in Buffalo that serve wings. Walking in at dinner time will be crowed as expected ( I'm suspecting mostly tourists), but that doesn't justify the long waits and the rude wait staff. I have been there numerous time only because any friends that come in to town want to see the historic place. Every time I have been there I was waited on by someone who seems to feel that they have the right to be inattentive and rude because the are an anchor bar waitress and they are special because of this.

When you order wings, expect to wait about 45 minutes to an hour for them to arrive (as you sit there thirsty because of the previously mentioned staff). Close to the end of our dinner a small band got up on stage and started playing which was ok, UNTIL i received the bill and there was an extra charge because we were there when the band was playing.

Living in Buffalo my whole life, I've eaten a LOT of wings. I'll try wings everywhere I go and I will say that I have had better. I have had the suicidal wings here and they have an overpowering taste of black pepper. The mixture of hot flavors doesn't really blend that well because of this.

If you need to see the history behind the chicken wing, stop in, take a picture, buy a t-shirt and go to Duffs on Sheridan. If you do decide to stay, don't expect the wings to be phenominal, service to be quick or the staff to be friendly.

Sub-par wings

This is a nice place to visit every few years with good atmosphere and decent food in the down town area. It's full of tourists almost all the time and there is a reason for that - the locals all go to Duffs because that is where the best wings are at. The wings were nothing special at the Anchor Bar and the pizza was lousy, but maybe the cook was having a bad day the 3 times I've visited there over the past few years???? I keep going back because all the tourist's books I read and some people I know swear by their wings, and I keep giving them a chance hoping to see what all the fuss is about. But there is absolutely NO question in my mind. Average food with a better dining area than Duffs, but I go for my monthly fix to Duffs with no regrets.

Overrated

We came up to Buffalo, for the National Buffalo Festival; we had heard great things about the Anchor Bar, so we thought we would check it out for ourselves. The place was overrated with average wings. It may be the ""original"" Buffalo wing place, but we have had much better. The bartenders were slow and a guy that we walked in with waited 45 minutes for 2 pound! Buffalo has a lot of bars that have wings; don't waste your time here!

This place is awesome. You can enjoy a meal with the family or watch the ball game at the bar. The Anchor bar is a true landmark that you must experience if in Buffalo or just passing through.

Best wings ever!

Everytime I go to Niagara Falls, I always go to two places: Anchor Bar and LaNova. Anchor Bar has the best wings. LaNova has the best pizza and a close second in their wings. Anchor Bar is the original place for buffalo wings and I wouldn't have it any other way. These are THE best!

The original and still the best!

Best wings, sauce, and bleu cheese, period. Other food is good too but if you go there, you have to order wings.
