Smoken' Joe's got off to a rough start a few years ago, and now I'm super happy they've turned things around.
They have awesome live music every night, from blues to bluegrass, the service is fast and friendly and the food is really tasty. Plus, they have a full liquor license now - score for bourbon and BBQ!
This is a great place to come with friends and spend a while listening to music and nomming on ribs. Be forewarned it's small and popular and on a weekend night there might be a cover - if you can even get a seat. Worth it if you can. Get extra Memphis Hot sauce, and thank Joe himself when you leave - he's always there enjoying the band and chatting with the customers.

I was very disappointed. I came here on a Saturday night, before the dinner rush with a few friends. We were seated almost immediately, but did not get our orders taken until 45 minutes later. The food took even longer to actually arrive at the table. Plus, the utensils didn't come until 10 minutes later. The service, overall, was slow and inattentive. We asked the waitress for an extra plate to share one entree; she never brought it or stop to see if we needed anything throughout the entire time we were there. The food itself was superdry and lacked flavor. The one plus was the sauce that was served on the side; very tasty. But it could only do so much to save the super-dry meat. We also ordered the baked beans, but they were extremely salty and overly sweet. The music was good, so I would recommend coming in to check the local talent, but not much else.
Visited Last night 6/12/08 for first time. Place was completely disorganized. Bar area a mess - dirty glasses piled up. Clutter in window/bar area. Not an inviting place to sit. If area need for staff purposes and take out customers then remove stools and use it as such. Couldn't tell if understaffed or just bad service. Ordered two glasses of wine and server only able to poor one since no more cold pino grigio. Music relaxing but server repeating how busy they are was not relaxing. Ordered two appetizers : Crab cakes delicious. Rice cold. Gave up after that and went somewhere else.

This place is my favorite new(ish) neighborhood bar/restaurant. The Owners are local but provide high quality barbeque that folks from down South say is very authentic. The house band plays blues Friday and Saturday nights, and there's a gospel brunch on Sunday. How refreshing to enjoy good food and live quality music in the city without a cover... and Shirley (the lead vocalist) is my new female role model! I also love the fact that this place attracts a really diverse crowd... suburbanites with young kids, students, yuppies and multi-generation locals, old school blues afficionados... different ages, backgrounds, colors, and life experiences... that's what hanging out at a quality place in the city should be all about! And I also really like that even though it's a barbeque joint, it's got lots of quality offerings for those who don't eat beef or pork. The catfish nibblers are what first roped me in as a takeout customer (though they're best served in-house of course!) and the shrimp appetizer (with a fantastic sauce prepared by Smoken Joe's son Mike) is a new staple of my diet. I'm not usually a chicken wing fan, but like those here too (especially with a choice of six sauces prepared by hand by Smoken' Joe)! An all around quality joint, owned and operated by quality local folks, with entertaining and quality live music and an ever growing local (and not so local) loyal following... check it out!

Like I said above, its about time. I stopped into this place on my way home from work to give it a try. I had the brisket sandwich. It was some of the best brisket I have ever had. I was eating at the bar and sitting next to the owner. He told me he makes all the sauces and rubs himself and smokes everything on site. It was so good I went back the next day for lunch. This time I had the burnt ends sandwhich, its brisket ends smothered oin bbq sauce. They have a bunch of sides to choose from also. Skip the pizza next tme and try Joe's bbq.
