Provided by Citysearch -great food awesome prices vey family friendly, I figure out a trick on parking! Park in key bank parking lot when el matador parking lot is full. I defiantly recommend this place

Provided by Citysearch -I go to el matador for lunch quite a bit, food is excellent the best part is the warm salsa all the species just tingle in your mouth. El Matador is sure the best trex-mex place in Utah!

Provided by Citysearch -We went there 12 years ago at the recommendation of a neighbor when we moved here. We were not impressed then.
Last night we again because of a comment from another friend. The service was very good but the foood was mediocre at best. Rice and beans were overcooked and very dry. Chimichanga was overcooked, tough, and had very little meat. Same generic tomato sauce dumped over things. We won't bother to go back again. There are much more authentic Mexican restaurants around the serve delicious food like Javier's, or Mara's or Patricia's in Ogden.

Provided by Citysearch -My boyfriend remembers going to this restaurant as a child, so we went for lunch...and apparently things have changed a lot.
I got a smothered burrito, and it was tasteless. The rice was overcooked. The salsa tasted like spaghetti sauce, and it was served WARM. Gross. Not to mention overpriced.
It stays in business because it is popular with the locals......it's mexican food for great white northerners. Particularly the older folk who cant handle ANY spices. Our waitress was very nice and the manager was sure to come check on us as well, so my complaint is solely with the food.
Go to Lorenas in Woods Cross if you want good Mexican food as well as good service. They are amazing.
Will not be back here.

Provided by Citysearch -I go to El Matador for lunch quite a bit.
The food is good. The warm salsa is a nice change of pace and I get it with cheese. Yumm.. I like the enchiladas.
I now ask for Sandra because she is nice and fast with the service. Most important to me is that she kept my table clear. Good service is always a plus when you go out to eat.
I think El Matador is worth the trip for sure!!
I have been going to EL MAT since I was a little girl, and my husband proposed to me there :D we used to meet up and have dinner with the whole family The chicken chimichangas enchilada style with guac are to die for. I can't believe some of the reviews I have read. granted the food may not be authentic but it is a great place to gain fond memories

Provided by Citysearch -My husband and I both love to dine here. Service and atmosphere are pleasant and warm and clean.
Chef Tony does a great job of producing the BEST Mexican food.
The salsa is my favorite ever, full of fresh vegetables and so flavorful! My husband loves the Chili Verdi, which is yummy. He orders it as a side dish - - it is so delicious and he sometimes puts it over his entree too. Do you know how food is so good you get a craving for it? That is El Matador.
We highly recommend you give it a try!

Provided by Citysearch -I USED TO GO TO THE ORIGINAL EL MATADOR IN OGDEN. ON THE WEST SIDE OF OGDEN AVE.
Thought I would try the Bountiful local.
They made me wait to be seated there were a
lot of empty tables (why the 20 min wait)
I ordered the Veracruz platter w shrimp. The
server was kind she brings a basket of chips and
watery tasteless salsa I had he bring me some hot sauce it helped a bit.
The food was just ok ,but the Shrimp were not as good as before. Why the Chinese hot mustard? This is a Mexican cafe!! I am going back to Chubby's!

Provided by Citysearch -I'm quite baffled by some of these negative reviews. I've been coming to El Mat since I was a little boy...and I've tried tons of different Mexican, and it's still the very best. The thing that kills me about these reviewers, is that they mention they don't love something about the food...but how about telling your server or asking for management?? El Matador has the BEST servers and management of any restaurant we've ever been to. If you aren't completely satisfied (the very few times something hasn't been perfect), they bend over backwards to take care of you. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is awesome, the service is the best...and I'd pay to eat there, just for a convo with the owner. Love El Mat!!!

Provided by Citysearch -The food was dry, and bland. My wife is a fan of mild salsa, but we both agree that the salsa tasted like tomato soup.
It's also really popular with the locals (not sure why) so the wait can be over 45 min. for a party of two. Especially on a weekend.
It's popular with families, and the prices are reasonable (it is Mexican food after all). So if you have kids it might be a good option. But if you don't like restaurants with lots of kids you probably won't like this one.

Provided by Citysearch -Great, great food. Awesome prices. Very family friendly. I've heard some say the food has changed since the old place...I'd agree it has a little, I imagine because they are serving three times as many people. However, it still, and always will be the signature El Mat food. Delicious. We figured out a trick on parking! Park in Key Banks parking lot back behind when El Mat's is full! I've been to a business luncheon as well as a wedding lunch, and they were both awesome. Definitely recommend.

Provided by Citysearch -The food is simply the best. The The cheese enchiladas and jumbo shrimp on the Veracruz are my fave. The previous review makes me laugh, cause El Matador has the most decent prices around, and all of their food is fresh, fresh fresh! If it ever is dry, it's because they bake all the food in a 500+ degree oven...but if you tell them you have a problem, they're the best about fixing anything. Customer service like Nordstrom, my wife says, ha. Also, the shredded beef chimichanga...delicious. The service is top notch. We've only had one server ever we didn't love, and now we just ask for the ones we know are great. The service is always way speedy and they are more than happy to accommodate whatever we need. My wife always gets the shredded beef taco salad or the zapata, I believe it's no. 7 on the combos...and we seem to crave it constantly. Also, get cheese for your salsa! It's mouthwatering! This place has been in business for a LONG time, and for good reason. Tasty fresh scones for dessert are a must too.

Provided by Citysearch -El Matador has the best food. The salsa is so fresh filled with lots of vegetables and excellent flavor! It comes out warm...get cheese to put in it! It's delicious! The restaurant is so pretty and always clean. And the owner sure is a sweet man. He always brings our kids treats when we come in! It's the best in town for the price. The pork rio bravo is AMAZING. Yum, yum, yum!

Provided by Citysearch -El Matador is our favorite. The food at El Matador is the best! Literally. We've eaten Mexican at every establishment in Bountiful, and several other cities and states, and El Matador is still our number one. Maybe it's the homemade and flavorful BUBBLY hot enchilada sauce, or the fact that the owner hand picks the tender slow roasted meats...perhaps it's the atmosphere (The restaurant is gorgeous and the decor is so tasteful!), or the knowledge that the ALL the food is delicious and made IN HOUSE. I'm not sure where the magic comes from. All I know is El Matador is an experience that is definitely worth the trip!

Provided by Citysearch -The El Matador in Ogden and the one in Bountiful are owned by two brothers, I've known them for over forty years. It's not authentic Mexican, but it's good food. If you found your food bland, next time try the chili verde.
You don't stay in business as long as they have with the crowds they serve if the service and food are bad. Kids are always welcome.
04/16/2009
Provided by Citysearch -The exterior makes this a deceptive place -- looks great on the outside, but everything inside is disappointing (layout, decor, etc). Don't get the management mad, I've heard them get angry at critics and run them out the front door.
This is weird place to eat. The food is 'cheese melt mexican' everything they serve seems to smothered with melted cheese -- with tomato paste that has almost no flavor.
There are so many Mexican restaurants in South Davis County -- don't waste your money on this one.

Provided by Citysearch -There is a reason that El Matador has been in business for over 20 years - It's clean, it's good, it's family friendly, and you get a lot of food for your buck. I have been going to El Matador for over 16 years and enjoy it every time I eat. The owner is someone who takes pride in his business and I often see him interacting with customers, handing out candy to the little ones, and making sure that people are satisfied. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food, this may not be at the top of the list. However, having traveled to Mexico on occasion, authentic Mexican food in some cases, leaves things to be desired.
My favorite dish is the Chicken Chimichanga with the fresh guacamole on the side, and I like to polish it off with a piece of hot sopapilla. Also good are the fajitas, the cheesburger and fries, and the simple chicken burrito enchilada style. They serve chips and salsa in plenty, and I have never had bad service. For the value, the taste, the service, and the selection - this is an A+ establishment.

Provided by Citysearch -This has probably got to be the worst Mexican food I've ever tasted, other than Del Taco.
The salsa is warmed and tastes just like tomato soup, the beans are bland and tasteless.
The servers snap at you when you aren't ready,
and the owner is loud and seems very angry.
Hate this place.
I have been going to el Matador since I was a kid. My aunt actually worked there:) I love the new location, not the new price. I used to be able to get two soft shelled shredded beef tacos for the price of the hard shelled ones but now it costs about $10.00 for one. Lunch time is crazy here be prepared to wait. My only problem besides the pug nosed late 30's early 40's blonde waitress who is terrible...is the dreaded dreary and dark green room which has no natural light to offset the low lighting that is every where. You can barely see your food and your eyes spend the whole time trying to adjust. I ran into an old high school friend there and couldn't recognize him until he took off his baseball cap. I was so embarrassed. I'd just avoid that room until they realize the bad lighting and fix the problem.
