Honest, Competent, Friendly Auto Care

General Info
I opened Independent Motors in 1983 after working as a Master Nissan Technician for a Denver dealer. I didn't like the way the employees and customers were treated, so I decided to do things differently. I immediately installed two lifts for each of my technicians so they would not have to wait around for parts. I offered group health and dental insurance to all employees along with matching IRAs. I made sure that our service writers were paid on salary instead of commission. That way they wouldn't have any incentive to sell customers unneeded repairs in order to increase their paychecks. In 1983 we were pioneers in offering employees such a complete benefit package. Many years ago I remember a young Boulder hippie with long hair, beard and shabby clothes came into the shop. He was trying to sign me up on a brand new program that he had helped put together. It was the original program that Public Service ( now Excel Energy ) used to generate electricity from wind power. I took a liking to him and his cause, and advised him how to clean up his act to better solicit business men and women. As a result of this meeting Independent Motors became the first business to sign up for wind power in Boulder. If you own a domestic or Asian car or truck, my aim is to be the only shop you'll ever need. Whether your vehicle needs maintenance service, repairs, new tires, detailing, windshield replacement, oil change, or a tune-up, Independent Motors is the place for you. We have been family owned since 1983 and invite you to become a member of our extended family, too. Don't take my word for it'

The best!

I have been taking my cars to Independent Motors for a few years, and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. They took great care of my 1998 Subaru and now work on my 2008 VW. Having dealt with several untrustworthy and dishonest repair shops in Boulder before finding Independent, I was really relieved to find a place where the service is reliable and reasonable. Everyone there is so helpful, kind, and willing to go the extra mile to explain all of my options and work within my budget. Recently, I called them right before closing on a Friday to discuss an issue with a flat tire. They didn’t hesitate in telling me to come on in; I didn’t even have to wait until Monday. They kept the tire, and checked the spare and all of my other tires at no cost. I would highly recommend Independent Motors to anyone!

Ripoff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rip-off artists, Took my Nissan Sentra there today to have the AC recharged. I paid $194.54 to have them tell me that I have a hole in the condenser and that it will cost me an additional $772 to have it replaced for a grand total of $966.! I picked it up and paid nearly $200 for nothing but a diagnosis that I'm not even sure I trust.
A friend at work suggested I call Keep Kool in Denver, where I was quoted a price of $400 - $450 total. Sure wish I'd asked in the first place!
If money is no object, as I'm sure is the case with many Boulderites, these guys may do okay work but if money is tight, as it is with me, stay far away from this place.

I'm pleased and keep returning to them

A number of years ago, after my Infiniti hit 120,000 miles, I decided to try Independent rather than a dealer. I've been very pleased with them. Their services are reasonable and what has especially impressed me are the answers they give me as to whether I really need to have something repaired. I usually go ahead and have it done rather than putting it off, but that is in part because they don't try to tell me something needs to be done right away. Therefore I don't feel like I am being talked into unnecessary, high-priced services. They also have free wifi, free coffee, and free loaner cars, so I can either work there or run errands.

Satisfied Customer

Being a woman who doesn't know a lot about cars........I can say I trully trust the guys at Independent .
I have been taking my 1996 Jeep there for about two years now and they never disappoint. They remember me (and my dog) by name. They always prioritize repairs for me which is a big help since I can't always afford to fix everything. I've found the prices reasonable and the staff helpful. They are always willing to take extra time to answer my questions.

Stay Away. Stay Away

I think their friends wrote the other positive reviews. My experience is quite different.

My usual mechanic couldn't fit me in for an emergency repair and recommended Independent. On his recommendation I had my car towed there. I was given an estimate of nearly $800 to fix the fuel pump. I called my usual mechanic to ask if that sounded right. He thought it was absurd and squeezed me in. (Yes, I had to pay yet another tow bill to get it to him.) He fixed my fuel pump for $204.00. That's 1/4 of what Independent quoted me.

Not only that they left the car in worse shape than when I gave it to them. The battery was dead and the starter was unhooked. When I requested they refund the $49 they charged me they refused and even got nasty with me. Such a shame.

My usual mechanic is getting tired and I would love to have another reliable place to take my car. Independent Motors is definitely NOT it. Stay away. Stay away.
