Safeway, founded in 1915, is one of the largest food and drug retailers in the United States. The company s stores offer a variety of food and general merchandise, including baked products, bagged salads, whole bean coffees, cookies, sweets, frozen pizzas and pastas, sauces, and olive oils. It also offers ice-creams, frozen yogurts, meats, cheeses, sandwiches, sorbets, cereal bars, and floral items. The company operates more than 1,500 stores in the Southwest and Middle Atlantic States, including California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Colorado, Arizona, and Texas. Its stores also have adjacent Starbucks coffee shops, pharmacies and fuel centers. Steven A. Burd has been the chief executive officer of Safeway for more than 13 years. He has been with the retail grocery giant for over 14 years. Burd earned a bachelor s degree from Carroll College Wisconsin, and a MA from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Safeway operates through a network of distribution, manufacturing, storage, and food processing facilities located throughout the United States, and is headquartered in Pleasanton, Calif.
