Robert R. Jones M.D. did his undergraduate work at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in premedical studies. He attended medical school at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle where he was elected into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and received the Lange Medical Publications Award for outstanding achievement. He completed an internship in internal medicine/emergency medicine at the University of Utah Affiliated Hospitals in Salt Lake City and is thus a fully qualified general practitioner of medicine. Dr. Jones then completed an extensive residency in surgery and diseases of the eye at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In his final year at Mayo, he served as chief resident of the department of ophthalmology. He is a board-certified diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and maintains this distinction through formal re-certification which involves many hours of continuing medial education as well as passing board re-certification examinations and office record reviews.
Macular Degeneration
While injections of certain medications and laser treatment are used to treat wet macular degeneration, there is no procedure available today to restore vision loss from dry macular degeneration, the more common form.
Laser Eye Surgery
In Lasik Overview we are concerned with the cornea which is the central front surface of the eye. (A contact lense rests directly on the cornea.) The cornea plays an important role in focusing light rays from objects onto the retina. A cornea that is too steep focuses light in front of the retina causing myopia or nearsightedness. A cornea that is too flat focuses light behind the retina causing hyperopia or farsightedness. Astigmatism results from irregular degrees of corneal curvature. The bottom line is that an incorrectly shaped cornea creates an image that is not perfectly focused on the retina and poor vision results. This is where lasik comes in.
Cataracts
A cataract occurs when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy. The lens is located inside the eye just behind the pupil. Therefore, a cataract is not a film that grows over the surface of the eye as many mistakenly believe.
Cataract Surgery
Dr. Jones has performed thousands of cataract procedures including high risk patients with special needs referred by other eye doctors. Patients with poor pupil dilation and/or extremely advanced cataracts may require Malyugin Ring technology and techniques other than ultrasonic emulsification and he is an expert in these areas. Cataract surgery is done under an operating microscope through a tiny self-sealing incision through which the cataract is removed and a foldable intraocular lens is implanted. Patients are awake during the entire procedure and can resume nearly all of their normal activities the day after the surgery!
