We at Garden City Pediatric Associates are pleased that you have chosen us to care for your child. Garden City Pediatrics is a pediatric healthcare medical practice located in Beverly, Massachusetts consisting board-certified pediatricians, and mid-level practitioners. Cate Hermann, joined GCPA in June 2022. She received her Bachelor and Master of Science in Nursing from MGH Institute of Health Professions in 2017. Cate began her career as a PNP at a pediatric primary care practice in Lowell, MA.
Ear Infections
Cigarette smoke is very harmful to your baby. It can cause wheezing and ear infections, and has been associated with SIDS. Avoid smoking near your baby or in your home or car, and insist that other people avoid smoking around your baby as well. This will help your baby stay healthy. It can be very difficult to quit smoking, but any decrease in second-hand smoke will benefit your baby.
Emergency Care
For life-threatening emergencies you should call 911 or seek help at the closest emergency room. For other urgent situations, we recommend you call our office first for advice. When emergency room care is warranted, we generally recommend you take your child to Beverly Hospital. Beverly Hospital is staffed with pediatricians from Boston Childrens Hospital at all times, who often see the pediatric patients in the ER and are always available to the emergency room doctors to ensure that children receive age-appropriate care.

In 2007, Laura received her Master’s in Social Work from Boston College and began her career working for South Shore Mental Health as a school-based clinician within the Randolph Public Schools. Laura moved to the North Shore in 2013, where she continued her career as a School Adjustment Counselor working for the Manchester/Essex Regional School District.

Skin Cancer
SUN PROTECTION includes several strategies for shielding the skin from the harmful rays of the sun, in order to avoid damaging sunburns. Children are at greatest risk from sunburns; research has shown that a bad sunburn early in life increases the risk for future skin cancer. The suns rays are strongest from 10am until 3pm, so special attention should be paid at these times. Try to eat lunch indoors or in a well-shaded area. Also be careful at the beach or pool, as the sun’s rays will also reflect upward off of the water and sand. Lightweight clothing and a hat with a brim should be worn to cover as much of the skin as possible, and babies should be shaded under a canopy or sun umbrella. For all children, sunblock should be applied to all exposed areas of skin. Look for an SPF of 15-20 or more (though very high numbers are not significantly better than those in the 20-30 range), and reapply after swimming or prolonged exercise. Use a lotion that is PABA-free or hypo-allergenic to minimize the chances of a skin rash. Sunglasses that filter out UV rays are a good idea; consider unbreakable, plastic sunglasses for children. When it is very warm outside be sure your children are drinking plenty of non-caffeinated fluids to prevent dehydration.
