love me a good steak and was so excited to try Mastro's after all the rave reviews...I was disappointed to say the least!
The meal itself was good just not outstanding. There needs to be SOMETHING about the meal that sets it above the rest. Either a salad or side or dessert or SOMETHING. All this place had was blue haired old school Beverly Hills socialites. There was more plastic surgery and bling in this place then I've seen in a long time! The only younger people in there were golddiggerish!
If I'm going to go to a steak house I'd rather the Lodge or Ruth's Chris!
Everything was "good" and for that kinda dough I want really really really good! I know many people who swear by Mastro's so maybe it's just me not loving the scene?
Was a little disappointed at this place. Steaks are great but not outstanding considering prices. I was mostly turned off by the ambiance, the night I went there they had a band playing, which was nice but also was incredible loud and disruptive for a nice meal. The place felt more like a bar with hustle and bustle of people, band and waiters moving around, than a high-end restaurant.
Still pretty delicious here. Peeps have told me that sometimes they get that not so great side of steak here but this past weekend, we all got A+++ quality in steak & service.
Asked for upstairs seating as far away from the live singer as possible. Seated the (5) of us 1/2 way away next to the bar (I looked, they had larger tables in the back so they tried to accommodate my request).
When I arrived to check in, a lady waltzed up & asked for 1st available seating. The maitre d' said 10:30 p.m. She looked at us both & asked the time. We both said "7:30 p.m." and her eyes bugged out. Yes - reservations are HIGHLY recommended 'cos the downstairs waiting area w/ bar was PACKED with walk-ins.
We were seated right away & happily served by Mr. Amari. We wanted steaks right away so just ordered some drinks (I got the Dragon Fire Martini - check out the pix - w/ jalapeno spiciness infused w/ tequila mix & very yummy).
(1) Bone-In Filet Mignon & (4) orders of 22 oz Bone-In Rib Eye - medium rare or medium - all came out succulent & perfectly done.
1) Lobster Mashed Potato - the perfect blend of seafood & creamy mashed potato - a must have if you go here
2) Cream of Corn - it has really thick cream - almost like a cream corn soup - got really thick towards the end as it cooled down. Not even close to being like Lawry's cream of corn. I could do without this dish
3) Gruyere Mac N Cheese - last visit 3 years ago was amazing cheesy goodness. And this past weekend, it was like cooked mac noodles at the bottom...and then a solid mess of 5 cheeses just sitting on top - almost like lasagna style. It wasn't good at all. I was shocked 'cos I talked it up to the other 4 in my group. Never ordering this again.
Thank god we didn't order the seafood tower - the guys barely finished their rib eyes. I still have rib-eye leftovers in the fridge. The other girl finished 1/2 of her filet. And all 3 sides had about 1/3 leftover.
Service was impeccable. While Amari was serving me the cream of corn, some woman sashayed her way by our table & bumped him. Amari used to be a football player - so he's one big dude. He actually lurched towards me & saved me from being a cream of corn covered lady for the night. Let's just say we laughed it off.
Definitely expensive but worth a reservation to take your special someone - boytoy/girlfriend/mommy/daddy...you get my drift.
For a high end steak restaurant in Beverly Hills I should NOT have to wait over an hour for my RESERVATION. What is the purpose of having a reservation? Once we did sit down, the steaks were good, but the service POOR. And fair warning...Thursday night is apparently karoke night. Ask to be seated downstairs unless you want to hear Sweet Caroline sung by an intoxicated fool while eating your $50 steak.
My boyfriend and I had such a great time. When I made the reservation, the host asked me if it for a special occassion. I told him it was for my boyfriend's b-day. They took down the occassion and told me I didn't need to remind the waiter. When we got there, the food we ordered was excellent. Plus, the waiter timed it perfectly to bring out a complimentary cake for my boyfriend. Service was great. Steak there is excellent. This is definitely one of the best steakhouse in LA!
