As a dedicated yoga practitioner at Shakti, I have to say that is is a great studio. It has the best instructors - I have not yet found one I didn't like - a great space, and a vigorous practice that works wonders for both your body and mind. My friend convinced me to take the intro series with her a few years ago and I haven't stopped going since. Shakti has a class for all levels of practitioners and the instructors teach modifications so even if you don't feel ready to take a higher level class after going through the intro series, you'll can because you will know how to modify the poses to fit your own practice! I can't say enough great things about Shakti - everyone there is warm, friendly and helpful - please disregard the negative post as it is not at all representative of Shakti Vinyasa yoga - maybe the person was confused about where they were? At one point my schedule allowed me to go to Shakti about 5 times a week and I have never had a bad experience - just the opposite!!!

I am writing this review partially in response to reviewer who gave Shakti one star.
I have been going to Shakti for just about 2 years now and have been consistently pleased with the attention, support and instruction offered by the teachers at this studio. On the one occasion that I came across a teacher I didn't like, I made a point of avoiding her class.
Speaking to the level 1 intro classes, there is only one series at a time and that can be frustrating if it doesn't line up with what your schedule currently looks like. But as someone who took the intro classes and still returns to them periodically, they are extremely helpful and worth the effort to realign your schedule two days a week for a month. I also believe the cost for the 8 class series is reasonable at $88.
It is true, as a mom of three and a person with a job, that I can't always make the class schedule meet mine. But to date, it has been the case that my requests and suggestions regarding scheduling have been listened to with a conversation concerning options following suit. Never once have I felt pressured to do something or did anyone ever attempt to ""up sell"" me on anything.
I primarily practice at the Ballard studio, which I find spacious and comfortable. The changing room is on the smaller side, but I think you need to ask yourself what you are there for. There is a shower and bathrooms should I need it, and a place to put my belongings. I have never felt that my possessions were in jeopardy as there is always someone at the front or the front door is locked during class.
I am extremely grateful for this studio, the variety of instructors and the practice they enable me to pursue. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a vigorous yoga practice.
Shakti Vinyasa yoga is awesome. Lisa and Peter and the Shakti instructors provide the best comprehensive yoga experience each class. Physicality, spirituality and physiology wrapped into sweet love. The studio is the most beautiful of all studios in the Northwest. Parking is free. The people are wonderful. An all around excellent experience.
As a current and regular practitioner of Shakti Yoga East I was surprised at the negative experience the person who posted a complaint on 10/07/08 publicly displayed on City Search.
I, on the other hand, feel extremely honored to be part of such a wonderful yoga community @ Shakti East!
There is not a single instructor at Shakti who would try to sell you a private class in order to profit. Also, anyone is welcome anytime to any level of class, regardless of their previous yoga experience. However, I WOULD be concerned if an experienced instructor @ Shakti DIDN'T encourage a student to learn the basics of Baptiste Style yoga. This is a very physical style of yoga. When the body is in a heated yoga studio, it is very easy to overdo it and wake up the next day with an injury if you don't learn the proper techniques first.
Shakti has an extremely supportive group of individuals running it's establishment. I would encourage the disgruntled customer who posted such a negative review to visit as many yoga studios in the Northwest as possible.
You will find that Shakti is the cleanest, friendliest studio with the best weekly class schedule, as well as experienced and supportive instructors.
And by the way, the bathrooms/showers/changing rooms @ Shakti East are some of the the nicest of any studio I have visited nationwide!
It is unfortunate you had a very bad day and chose to badmouth such a fine establishment.
I would encourage you to try yoga again, and implement some sort of therapy along with it to help your negative attitude!
