It is almost always my preference to support local business, especially in a town overrun with chains, like Bel Air. This is one business I DO NOT recommend supporting. I ordered a cake from Bel Air Bakery about 3 weeks in advance of an event. It turns out the owner herself took the order from me. When one of the options I was interested in was not available, she made a suggestion for a change and I agreed. We reviewed the order together, and I was satisfied with what she wrote. When I picked up my cake on the morning it was need, I discovered the one feature she had suggested and that we had agreed upon for the order was not there. Because of additional designs, it was not possible to fix without messing up the rest of the cake. I asked if a discount was available for not fulfilling the order as requested. The owner of the bakery flat out refused this option stating that "everyone thinks they can just get a discount when something isn't right. That's not how it works." I told her that was a pretty standard customer service policy, at which point she proceeded to make ageist remarks (assuming, I am sure, that I am much younger, and stupider, than I am). "I've been in this business longer than you have been on this earth..." and so on. My response was that age has nothing to do with ensuring customer satisfaction and taking responsibility for mistakes that happen in your shop. She stated that there were way too many cakes for her to ever check, and that is not her standard practice, even if she takes the order. So, my options were to pay full price for a cake that wasn't designed in the way I asked , walk away without a cake that I needed in 3 hours, or let the "artist" spray-paint it and risk messing up the entire cake. I ended up buying the cake, as any other choice would have left me in a bind. I was extremely disappointed by the attitude of the owner. There was not an ounce of tact or kindness in the way she treated me, nor did she accept responsibility or even apologize for the mistake. It was shocking to me that she could not offer $5 off, a bag of cookies, or some other incentive for me to come back in the future. I am sure she has a very regular clientele and does not feel the need to worry about new customers who use the internet and leave reviews on sites like this. Perhaps she is not concerned with growing business, but I cannot imagine being so recklessly unconcerned in an economy like this. Oh, and the cake? Nothing to get excited about. It was bland and far too heavily iced, with cheap, overly sweet frosting. I would have been much happier giving my money to Betty Crocker.
We went here for a scheduled cake tasting. After a long drive in traffic, we find that the only thing you can taste at their cake tasting is a piece of pound cake and buttercream frosting. The cake was simply disgusting, dry and clearly frozen several times over. The girl was either new or simply incapable of helping us. When we asked to taste fillings and other frostings, she told us they didn't have any there! (If not AT the bakery, where would they keep them???) She finally produced "raspberry" filling- as a glop squirted on a paper towel! Since we had driven all the way up, we tried to make the best of it, and we tried the filling, which turned out to be strawberry. I had to buy a cupcake to try their yellow cake (their only alternative to the pound cake) which was not as dry, but still not good. The whole trip was a waste of time!
