General Info
Christine Howe and Dana Black are the operators of Spencer Pond Camps. We are Maine natives and are married and will be bringing our two young daughters with us to share in the adventure. Oceania is three years old and baby sister Madelyn will be a year old in March 2010. We are avid outdoors people who believe in supporting a diversity of interests in interacting with nature. We share a deep love of the natural world and a wealth of knowledge regarding the life and lore of the Maine Woods. We will both be pursuing our guide's licenses in 2010 to put the official "seal of approval" on our outdoor knowledge and to honor the spirit of Mose Duty who was a Maine Guide and established the cabins at Spencer Pond. Christine is the granddaughter of former camp owners Chick and Anne Howe (1970-1995). She spent many childhood days at the cabins, and the exposure to UM wildlife students conducting pine marten research while staying at the camps ultimately lead her to obtain a B.S. in Wildlife Ecology with a concentration in resource management from the University of Maine. In the early 1990¿s, Christine designed and lead an interpretive nature walk program at Holbrook Island Sanctuary (State Park located in Brooksville Maine), worked as a certified ornithologist for a long term environmental monitoring program co-sponsored by the EPA, and was previously employed by Commercial Fisheries News in Stonington, Maine. She continues to be employed at Bank of America since 1996 and will telecommute from the camps. Christine believes in supporting our communities through volunteer service, and currently serves on the board of the Friends of Maine Seabird Islands . Dana Black started his career as a commercial fisherman offshore at the age of three. He has spent his life on the water and following the tutelage of his grandfather (an old Maine woodsman) and in his own words ¿the two places I am happiest are: the woods and on the water. He has the fierce independence, common sense, and ingenuity that define the Maine Lobsterman today. Dana is also a talented carpenter, mechanic, and welder and looks forward to spring when he can begin making repairs and restoring the cabins.
