Ole Austin Coffee or Lunch Spot

Great place for coffee or lunch. They serve Andersons' coffee, one of Austin's favorites; what more do I need to say. Health salads, hearty soup or sandwich, and decadent desserts.....

I've been going to Russell's for years, and some of the most special people in my life have coffee and tell stories around a table there on Wednesday mornings. Dr Ralph Smith and Jack Goodman anchor that table, and whatever THEY don't know isn't worth thinking I've had a long history of looking over the tasty things and sampling plenty from the pastry case. And so when it came to ordering the Cake of the Century, literally, I went to Russell's. We had the party at the Austin Country Club last weekend, and everybody said it was the most beautiful they'd ever been to, and I could have had any cake in town for Tura's special day. But the to-die-for fudgy raspberry chocolate with the fantastically elaborate pink sugar bow that covered the entire top of the cake was the kind of magic that makes beautiful moments shine in the memory for a long, long time. Total Perfection. Thanks to Trey and the whole Russell's team!

Need a special cake DON'T go to Russell's

So my wife's grandmothers 80th birthday is this Saturday, and we wanted to celebrate by presenting her with a beautiful lady-bug themed cake. So the week prior we went to Russell's, and placed our order with the apathetic female clerk at the counter. We should have known by her attitude and lack of any customer service skills that things were not going to go according to plan. But assuming that this was a professional bakery we went on our way with the promise that our cake could be picked up Friday evening. Fast foward a week and we come to pick up our cake and are told by this same girl at the counter that they ""lost our order"" and do not have the cake. After her hollow apologies the only offer she has for us is to take a plain chocolate cake or to refund our money. There are many reviews that comment on their wonderful food, but as a bakery they fail miserably. I will never do business with these so called ""bakers"" again, and hope they feel proud leaving our grandmother ""cakeless"" on her 80th birthday,

Is this even a bakery?

I love exploring new bakerys and I was excited when I stumbled upon Russells. Sadly, I was disappointed. nothing in the display case looked appetizing. I ordered a brownie, which tasted stale and way to sweet, and a danish. the danish was the biggest disapointment. it tasted old and mushy. I would not recommend this place at all.

Most lousy baked goods I've ever tasted.

Stopped in their older bakery for the first time and was truly disappointed. I'm from the East where fantastic bakeries are quite common. When you walk in, it doesn't even smell like a bakery. Honestly, it smells like NOTHING.

I looked in the case and decided to buy a variety of items to taste. The cupcakes looked good with what seemed to be a yummy swirl of butter cream frosting. Then I bought a strawberry danish and a russian tea cake. Then I bought one peanut butter cookie.

The cupcakes were so discusting and dry and the frosting tasted like nothing more than LARD. I swear they forgot the powdered sugar and vanilla. I through both of them away (and things have got to be pretty bad for me to through them away). The strawberry pastry was not nearly as good as Entenrmann's, the russian tea cake was so dry I nearly choked on it and the peanut butter cookie had that ""preservative taste"" to it. Everything went in the garbage at my husband's request and my $12.00 went down the drain.

I will never go back.

Not a good place for a wedding cake

I have been to Russell's Bakery a number of times, and am a huge fan of their food and atmosphere, so I thought this would be a great place to get my wedding cake. After leaving numerous messages with them to set up a cake tasting and get the process rolling, I finally received a phone call 3 weeks after my initial call, and after my third message left, only to find out that they no longer are doing wedding cakes exactly. What I was told is they are not going to be doing wedding cakes that need to be delivered and set, and said very matter of fact that they did not think they would be able to help me. A little disappointed to say the least.

Good Bakery

The cookies are very good and they have a nice selection of sandwiches. This place is a little out of the way for greater Austin, but I'm glad I found it.

Best coconut cake in town

Great place for an afternoon break-good variety with a delicious coconut cake with 7 minute icing. Also a good place to buy Mexican vanilla!

Perfect Place to Get a Wedding Cake

I recently used Russell's Bakery for my bridal cake and groom's cake. It was truly the best expierence I could imagine. Not only was Russell so helpful, but the cakes turned out far better than I ever imaged. Some weddings cakes just look good, but don't taiste good. This was not the case with Russell cakes. They were delicious. Everyone from my wedding has said they were the best wedding cakes they have ever had...and I have picky friends.

Try the cinnamon rolls

I used to frequent Russell's years ago when he had a very small store and I was glad to once again live in Austin so I could return to Russell's. I once again ordered my favorite coffee and one of Russell's cinnamon rolls. Wow - still as good as I had remembered. A freindly, yummy place to hang out. Many of his desserts are original Russell recipes. You MUST try not only the cinnamon rolls, but Russell's carrot cake - it is like no other you have ever tried.
