-I have been taking my 2004 Hyunday Accent to Carters, since 2009 with no regrets! They have rebuilt the transmission, and it still going strong for the last 80K miles. If anything needs to be done on my car I fully trust them with their knowledge and integrity!
- A little bit more then a month ago (2/23/12), my car was making a terrible noise, and I took it to them worried that it would the transmission again! Fortunately, it was not the problem, but the Differential Assembly! They fixed the problem, and as courtesy, next day, I received a phone call to make sure if the car was running ok! I believe, not many places will do the same! It is been 3K miles since, and my old Accent with more than 186K miles of driving is going strong!

The A/C of my family's 2008 CRV stopped working recently. I checked the fuses and relays in the diagrams that Honda makes available trying to troubleshoot the problem but had no luck. As I begun the painful search for a repair shop, I read plenty of reviews and thought I'd try my luck at Carter's. The reviews were encouraging and the free A/C diagnostic was a definite plus. It took 30 minutes for them to find the problem; a faulty part that was not included in Honda's diagrams as being part of the electrical system for the A/C. They showed me the problem and told me how to fix it with out charging me! The shop's owner said ""this is something you can do yourself"". The question is not if I will be back at Carter's, but, when! It really does not matter when but I will have some peace of mind knowing that I am taking my car to a mechanic I can trust. Two thumbs up!

I bought a new car and shortly after, the transmission went out. I know absolutely nothing about transmission repair, and was scared to death about getting taken advantage of. I needed to find someone that would understand my concerns, as well as my financial limits. I walked into Jay's office on S. Lamar, and he looked me directly in my eyes, and assured me that he would work with me. I had no problems at all... not one. My car is back on the road, running like new! I will ALWAYS refer anyone to Carter's, because of the genuine concern to help people.

I took my Honda Accord in to get Transmission work done. It needed a complete overhaul plus new mounts, which is a very time consuming process. I spoke with Ken over the phone (who was very helpful) and when I took it in, we discussed what needed to be done. I needed my car before the weekend, so for them, it was record time to have the repairs done. Ken was extremely nice and very helpful in working with my mom (who lives out of state) and I about the repairs & explaining everything to us and also answering all questions. He called today to say the car was ready for pick up and asked me to go back in- in about 2 weeks just to make sure everything was tight and secure and there were no leaks.
All in all, this place is great. Ken is a great, honest man who is not out to get you or take advantage of you. Just trying to get your car functioning and back on the road. You can't find better customer service like this in town!! I will be recommending him to all my friends, should they need any work done on their cars!

North Austin location, Kevin is great.
I'm very skeptical when it comes to car repairs. My brother is a mechanic (lives too far away) and I run my repair issues by him before I take my car in. I called 4 repair shops and Carter's was the only one that correctly diagnosed over the phone, and the only one that was willing to physically diagnose problem without a charge. It is nice to find an auto place that is honest and doesn't add extra costs and repairs.
I would highly recommend and I'm willing to make a 40 min drive rather than go to someone that is closer.

Last May I took my Lexus GS300 to Carters to repair an air conditioner condensate leak that was ruining my driver side carpet. They worked all day and charged me about $850. Unfortunately, the leak was not fixed and after taking it back twice more over the next few weeks, I left Austin to spend the summer in the Colorado mountains where a/c is not needed.
This May I returned to Carters and met their new manager, Ken James. He was very helpful and used the Internet to learn what others had done to solve the problem (a Lexus design flaw). He and his mechanic subsequently designed and built a tray to catch and redirect the water. They spent the better part of two days and would not accept any payment for their work. Excellent service for a very difficult problem.

Very helpful, and they make sure to explain full problem to you. Don't make you feel like you have to fix a lot of other things like other places do. Fix you need fixed, will mention other issues they note and leave the decision making up to you.
Quick, and helpful.

I have been to Carters before, so they were the first place I thought of when I needed help with my car. There was a terrible rattle coming out of the trunk lid, and I searched all over and could not find what was causing the rattle. I had visions of having to spend a LOT of money to get it fixed. When I got to Carters, they put a man on it within five minutes of my arrival. Right away he found what was causing the problem, fixed me up, and sent me on my way - no charge! How cool is that? Way to go Carter's.

I have been to Carters twice now with different car problems and both times received quality service. The men that assisted me were extremely helpful and very straightforward with what I needed to have done. They let me know what services were imperative at the moment and which ones I could wait on.
Since I was watching my money carefully, I had taken my car to two different places before Carters and Carters gave me the lowest quote. Because of their valuable service and low prices, they have earned me as a return customer. I recommend Carters to anyone needing automotive work done, definitely best in Austin!

I've always done business with firestone auto in the past which has never failed to find all kinds of things wrong with my car making each bill over a thousand dollars, so when I found carter's on google and gave them a shot, I was pleasantly surprised to find a shop with honesty and integrity. I highly recommend them to anyone in need of service whether small or large, I'm referring my friends here for sure.

In October '08, we took our '02 Mazda Tribute into Brian for transmission work. They replaced it (rebuilt?) and gave us a 3-yr/50k mile warranty on the parts and labor. Unfortunately, it did need to be worked on again - twice, actually, over the past 13 months - but Brian did that work without any issues. He is always a pleasure to deal with and I am thankful that he continues to stand behind the warranty he initially provided.
We've also taken that vehicle there for other issues (A/C, radiator, ignition coils, water pump) and they continually beat their competitors in price. Besides being fair, thanks for being someone we can trust, Brian.

I had a non-cooling A/C. Thought I might have some huge compressor problem, but turns out I just needed a dose of freon. Brian helped me on the spot (on a hot day) and explained dual a/c versus non-dual a/c and why the passenger side was cooler than the driver's. Maybe not the most exciting info, but good to know before you or an untrustworthy mechanic works you up about something that was just as simple as a little freon recharge and a little common sense regarding A/C's.

I work as a handyman and depend on my 1986 Toyota Van Wagon to keep my business going. This particular van is very weird in terms of the engine/trans layout, and can be challenging to work on. I have had some mechanics flatly refuse to work on it.
When I had sudden transmission problems, I first went to my closest shop, Drake Automotive. Bad experience there. Upon recommendations, I drove the Van into Carter's, and Brian and his mechanics did me right. The problem turned out to be multi-fold, and I had to do without the van. It was inconvenient and frustrating to have to scramble for another work vehicle, but Brian was excellent about keeping me updated about everything that was going on.
I haven't found another shop in Austin that displays the level of honesty, responsiveness, and fairness in price that Carter's does. I will certainly be going back if any more problems arise, and I would highly recommend this shop to anyone.

I took my car in for an estimate and was pleased to find out it was much less than I have been quoted by 2 other shops. Brian was extremely helpful and I was helped within seconds of arriving. The process was so simple and easy. The drop off was quick and on pickup I arrived early - and the car was ready!! The service, price and comfort that I received by not being taken advantage of will make me a lifetime customer of Carters!! Thanks guys for running such a professional business!

I took my '99 Camry to their South Lamar shop for a transmission rebuild. I was a first time customer who decided to try Carters based on online reviews. Very happy with the result. First of all, Brian is a very nice person, who does his best to help out. I went there as a foreign student (with an accent!) who knows little about cars. Instead of taking advantage of the situation to rip me off, they were very nice and honest from the very beginning. They gave me a student discount and let me use a coupon at the same time. They finished the job in 2 days although it was thanksgiving week. The new transmission works perfectly by the way. Don't hesitate to go to Carters.

Took a 2000 AWD explorer in after periodically feeling like I was driving over rumble strips. I wasn't able to describe the problem or how to reproduce it very well, though, and I didn't insist on going on the initial drive with the mechanic. In the process of trying to find what I was talking about, he found that my front differential was chewing up the end of the axle and needed to be rebuilt. Upon getting the car back, I was able to trigger the ""shudder"" again and when I got back to Carter's the mechanic jumped right in with me to see what I was talking about. Fortunately I was able to get the shudder to happen again and he knew immediately that it was coming from in the transmission. When we got back, Doug gave me a very reasonable estimate for rebuilding the transmission and discounted down to that $ amount when the actual work came to a little more. So, yes, I did pay for both repairs when I was expecting one, but the prices were very reasonable, the repairs needed to be performed, and they were great folks to work with. The only thing I would do differently would be to insist on going on the initial test drive since the main shudder issue was hard to reproduce and I knew I wasn't describing it very well to them.

I have been using Carters for more than 14 years. My truck needed a new transmission, Carters rebuilt it with all new internal parts and gave me a warranty. That was 5 years ago and 100,000 and it is still working just fine. They didn't want to replace the clutch at the time because it didn't need it. My husband agreed it didn't need to be replaced at that time but had it replaced anyway because the trans was already out. I have taken my truck back for other repairs (my truck now has 221,000 miles) and if it is a simple repairs they usually tell me if it is something that my husband can do. I trust Carters and have sent many co-workers and friends to the North Lamar Shop as well as my son. His trans was rebuilt by Carters 4 years ago and it is still working great in his 4-wheel drive. That truck has taken a beating.
