He completed his residency achieving excellence in cataract surgery, minor oculoplastic surgery, medical retina, pediatrics and glaucoma while becoming Chief Ophthalmology Resident his final year. He also completed research in the area of Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION) which was published in 2010 and presented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2009. Since residency he has become a proficient iLASIK and refractive surgeon and in 2012 became one of the first surgeons in Austin to perform Laser Cataract Surgery with the LenSx laser. He has also presented research on diffractive intraocular lenses at major meetings in both the US and Europe. Additionaly he is an active course instructor for surgeons in the United States for complex cataract techniques and intraocular lens exchanges.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness. Glaucoma occurs when the fluid pressure inside your eye is too high. As a result of the elevated eye pressure (aka intraocular pressure), the nerve connecting the eye with the brain, known as the optic nerve, becomes damaged. Any damage to the optic nerve produces a permanent and irreversible loss of vision. If left undetected and untreated, the optic nerve in a person with glaucoma becomes damaged beyond repair and can result in total blindness.

Macular Degeneration
Myopia (aka near-sightedness) is increasing worldwide and by 2050 it is estimated that 50% of the world’s population, about 5 billion people, will be nearsighted. As myopia continues to develop, it will increase the risk of eye diseases such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration. Theories suggest the cause of this epidemic is due to decreased outdoor time and increased use of digital devices. Myopia has become a serious public health concern.
Laser Eye Surgery
PRK: PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) was the first corneal procedure upon which FDA approval was given for the first generation of FDA approved excimer lasers. PRK involves complete removal of the corneal epithelium (surface layer of the cornea) followed by application of the excimer laser to the exposed corneal surface. The epithelium regenerates over a period of 3-5 days. The visual outcomes between LASIK and PRK are virtually equivalent. LASIK is preferred however due to the quicker recovery.

Eye Exam
Atropine was formerly used to dilate the eyes during an eye exam. However, atropine formulated at a very low concentration minimizes the side effects of dilation and most children do not experience side effects. While the low dosage has been considered safe on multiple clinical trials, every drug has side effects. It is possible your child might experience enlargement of pupils, increased light sensitivity, or reduced vision up close. Atropine is used off-label for the treatment of myopia progression.
