Auke Bay
We are a full service charter business, licensed to take six passengers to fish or whale watch. We have the required 6 person Halibut permit that is required to take people fishing for Halibut in Alaska. We offer Salmon, Rock Fish and Halibut Charters or Combo trips. We are based in Auke Bay but we can fish out of any port in South East Alaska for relocation fee to get the boat to your port of choice. Our trips from Auke Bay normally take a hour to the fishing grounds with some sports as close a 20 mins. and others as far as 2 hours each way which would require at least a 6 hour charter  but preferable 8 hours.  We provide top of the line Shamono reels and first class rods for Halibut and Salmon for each of our fishermen. Our open fishing cockpit, 130 square foot, allows for 6 fisherman to all fish with their own rods. We have 4 Scotty electric down riggers to find the Salmon and Sonar to find the fish. Captain Mike has been sport fishing for 45 years with the last 20 in Alaska. We offer a boat designed for fishing and comfort, we have a large cabin that is heated, has a large stand up head with hot and cold fresh water in the head with locking door. We have a large frig to keep a full varity of beverages and we provide sancks and lunch for our 6 and 8 hour trips. If your looking for a first class charter you will not be disapointed.

My family and I just got back from a cruise to alaska. I was in charge of booking our fishing trip for 8 people and I did my research. I ended up picking big jim's and in the end I wish I would have booked through the cruise ship instead. I'm not writing this review based on fish caught, we caught 6 between 2 boats on a 6 hour trip, not terrible and not great. I am writing this review based on the care level of the captain and the other boat that he used to take half of our group.

1st we arrived at the dock, which the cruise ship took longer than normal to let us disembark and then we still had to wait another 20 minutes to get picked up. 20 minutes isn't a long time but when you only have 7 or 8 hours to get a 6 hour fishing trip in, it is a long time.

2nd Captain Mike spent a lot of time before getting on the boat and then when we were on the boat answering emails and text messages and spent very little time talking with our group. He seemed to have a 'just another fishing trip' mentality and didn't take the time to make us feel like he cared we were there.

3rd I ended up booking him because his rate was lower than the cruise ship but in the end after having to pay for the van and taxes he comes up to a decent amount more than the cruise charters cost.

Overall, it wasn't a terrible trip but it wasn't what I have experienced on other charters in Seattle and Hawaii.

I would recommend going with another company.

Big Jim's = Big Joke

Apparently an emailed confirmation stating date, time, price and pick up location meant nothing to this company. As I'm getting off the cruise ship, I get a call from another company inquiring whether I'm interrested in going Halibut fishing. I call up Big Jim's only to find out they aren't coming but they can hook me up with this other outfit......for an additional $125 per person! His wife Helga (who deals with reservations) left a message saying they couldn't find another 2 people to pair us up with therefore they cancelled on us.......again (as I am coming off the cruise ship to meet them, per our CONFIRMATION EMAIL!) They had a chance to make ammends but chose not to reply to my email. If you're smart......STAY AWAY! I'm rating this outfit 1 star because I can't give them 0.
