As mammography has become more available and widely used, breast cancers are discovered at an earlier stage, allowing surgeons to curatively treat breast cancer with methods that employ breast conservation. The members of Augusta Surgical Group participate in a multi-disciplinary cancer approach, utilizing advanced surgical techniques coupled with oncologic intervention and radiation therapy, in an effort to treat patients early and aggressively for maximal chance at a cure. Using in-office ultrasound, we are able to biopsy lesions upon the initial visit, rapidly developing a plan of care for patients concerned about a breast mass. Whether the patient needs a modified radical mastectomy for an aggressive tumor found late, a lumpectomy with sentinel node biopsy for earlier stage neoplasms, or the reassurance and counseling with the benign breast cyst, Augusta Surgical Group is readily able to provide whatever care is necessary for the health, well-being, and worry-free confidence that patients deserve.

Dr. Bates was born and raised in Waycross, GA before attending the University of Georgia, where he graduated in 1992 with a B.S. in microbiology. He then received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and completed his internship at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. He finished his residency at the Medical College of Georgia in general surgery and joined the Augusta Surgical Group in 2001.
Vascular Surgery
Founded in 1971, Augusta Surgical Group continues to be the largest and oldest surgery group in Augusta, GA. Comprised of five general and vascular surgeons, the group practices primarily at University Hospital, providing a broad spectrum of general surgery services. The members of Augusta Surgical Group are committed to providing excellent surgical care utilizing the newest advanced techniques in breast cancer surgery for both benign and malignant problems, hernia repair, vascular surgery, as well as other surgical problems.
Robotic Surgery
Robotic surgery is the newest innovation in laparoscopic surgery allowing surgeons to perform more complex and intricate surgeries using the Intuitive DaVinci XI. Our surgeons are trained in performing complex robotic procedures including reflux surgery, gastrointestinal resections, inguinal hernia repairs, and complex ventral hernia repairs. Robotic surgery has been shown to decrease postoperative pain, hasten return to regular activities, and allows surgeons to perform procedures that may not be amenable to traditional laparoscopy.
Laparoscopy
The members of Augusta Surgical Group are committed to the use of advanced laparoscopic techniques for appropriate surgical procedures. Research has shown that patients benefit from decreased anesthesia time and have much more rapid, pain-free recovery with laparoscopy. The surgeons at Augusta Surgical are trained and routinely perform laparoscopic procedures which include: anti-reflux surgery, splenectomy, adrenalectomy, stomach and small bowel surgery, and even abdominal hernia repairs.
