2.5 weeks after I returned the car I get hit with a $250 "smoker's cleaning fee" which their website states they need to send a letter to you to inform you of the charges. It's been a month and a half and I still haven't received a letter. I've called numerous times to speak with management on getting an itemized bill and NOBODY has returned my calls. The toll free # was able to send me pictures of the "smoking evidence" which is totally debatable.

Their lack of basic customer service of returning phone calls and ripping people off is unethical.

Worst Rental Car Ever!

I would have given zero star if I could. This rental car is the worst ever! It took me at least 2hours waiting in line to rent a car and they have very poor customer service.I rented a car to travel, but suspected that I might be few minutes to an hour late to return the car so I called to alert them. The lady I spoke to was very rude, and not helpful at all. I later insisted to speak to a supervisor but she was not willing to transfer the call. The supervisor finally answered the call after waiting on the phone for almost 30mins (now I was already at the drop off center) He said I was 75minutes late, so he will charge me additional day fee which was $99. I tried explaining to the guy that the lady I spoke to kept me on hold for a long time, and I was already at the drop off center while waiting on his call. He insisted on charging me anyway. I drove home and returned the car the following day since he was going to charge me $99 for 30mins. I will NEVER EVER rent a car from AVIS.

Very positive experience

I had a billing issue (do to the massive snow storms on the East Coast. The offduty AVIS agent helped us and went above and beyond in taking care of us, following up with phone calls to make sure that we had gotten an emailed receipt. Really great experience.

Avis @ Atlanta airport courteously removed charge

When my wife & I rented a car for 2 days, the agent patiently went over the contract, line by line. But they get the third star for removing a charge for returning the car past the time due. We did return the car late, because on that afternoon there was a serious accident, involving an overturned semi, blocking traffic on I-20 in all directions. Of course we were on I-20, on the other side of the accident site, trying to return the car. When my wife called Avis about this, the agent (a different one) accepted my wife's word that the accident was the only thing keeping us from returning the car on time and removed the 1 hour charge right then. Maybe Avis has become aware that it doesn't have the best reputation and is making a greater effort.

10/10/08, Friday evening: We checked in at the Atlanta airport AVIS counter and we were given a ""space number"" of B38. Our car was not in B38. We had to wait in line again. 15 minutes later we were given a different car. The car had damage on the bumper, was not clean and smelled of smoke. We wanted an employee to walk the car with us and document the damage. No one would. We were told to write the damage on the agreement and the security guard at the gate would sign off on it. The security guard let us know that he was ""a retired military man and he won't sign anything"". We had to turn around and demand that an employee walk the car and document the damage so that we would not be held responsible for it. At that point we were given a discount because we were treated so poorly.

10/12/08 Sunday morning: We notice ants crawling in the door jambs of the car. We start looking closer and they are also crawling in and out of the center console. We notice ants in the truck as well and they have crawled in our luggage. We call AVIS on the way to returning the car and speak to a manager RHONDA. We explain that we don't have a lot of time when we get to the airport, because our flight leaves soon. We tell her the car is FILLED with ants and they are crawling all over the dashboard. She makes excuses about the time of year for the ants. We get to AVIS and we pull off the plastic part near the door jamb where you place your feet and it is IN FACT FILLED with ants. I HAVE A PICTURE and it's beyond disgusting. She did not comp the car or give us any sort of voucher to make up for the any filled car. She was not apologetic at all. We paid for the rental of a clean car and that was NOT what we received. We don't mind paying for services, but AVIS did not hold up to their end of the bargain, and we feel that something should be done about it.
We will never rent from AVIS again. This was the worst experience we've ever had.
