I recently moved to Chicago and called Matrix to cancel my membership. I had a copy of my lease that I offered to email to Allison but she refused it, claiming only a utility bill was acceptable. Since I've been in Chicago for 2 weeks, I dont have a utility bill at this point and I didnt want to continue paying for a membership that is impossible to use. I have been a member of NY Sports Club, Planet Fitness and other gyms and I've never had such a hard time canceling before. I couldn't believe I had to continue paying for this membership until I get sent a utility bill. I told Allison I would be writing a review based on my experience and at that point, things became bizarre as she refused to let me off the phone, continuing to talk whenever I said I was hanging up. She started saying completely inappropriate things like "You used to be so nice when you came to the gym, whats happened to you?". I was extremely annoyed with how she had begun talking to me like I was her daughter.
Synergy FITNESS 23-24 Broadway ASTORIA, NY I was charged $41.79 for the month of April 2016 w/o my knowledge . When I enrolled I was not informed that I will charge to this amount every year. I agreed for the payment only of one time $149.00 for administrative fee and $19.00 every month. BERNICE did not inform that I will be charge of $41.79 every year, despite the fact that I asked her 2x If there is any additional charges except the monthly fee of 19.17 dollars and one time administrative fee of 149.00 dollars ? She said clearly NO,NO .This is all you have to pay. This is very MISLEADING to new enrolees in the gym and I don't appreciate this FRAUD . I hope they will return my money back …
Ive been a member for years. Always liked it. Likeceveryone says female mamagement is rude. That accounts forcdecline inbetship and the fact that they RENEW your membership withput your aithorization! Poor business practice and refuse to refund the 4omths they deboted my account. Why didnt I notice right away?y father was dying in a hospice.
If I could give 0 stars I would. This place is where dreams and vermin go to die. Plus they are a bunch of scam artists. I made the mistake of joining this hole which is dirty, smelly, and just all around lacking because it was close to my apartment. After I finally decided I couldn't bear the thought of working out there anymore I went in to cancel. A woman I spoke with asked my info and told me she cancelled my account. When I was charged the next month, I called to tell them they had made a mistake only to be told that I had to cancel via certified mail and that I now owed them another month for a gym I hadn't and wouldn't be going to. They told me it wasn't their fault for misinforming me of how to cancel and actually lied about canceling my membership, but MY fault because I believed them and didn't read the fine print on my contract. So I paid them and sent the certified letter. THAT WAS 2 YEARS AGO!! I just received a letter in the mail saying I was being sent to collections for another month of a membership because they are claiming they received the certified mail 3 days after the monthly cut off...2 YEARS AGO!! Clearly they are lying, but dared me to prove it with the certified receipt that I apparently should've held onto like a hoarder for the rest of my life. This place is THE WORST, as are the people who work there. I've contacted the Better Business Bureau who informed me this business has an F rating and multiple other people are experiencing the same issue.
The actual gym is decent, albeit expensive, and they keep taking away more and more space from the main room with all the machines to make random specialty classes. However, I must **WARN** you that as other reviewers have said, the staff are the most arrogant, and deceitful I have come across in the health club industry to date. There are such shady business practices going on here that they actually train the clueless front desk staff NOT to allow you to speak with upper management. I had been in what I thought was a month to month contract for over 2 years, which I was paying $20-$30 per month more for (almost $100 per month!), than a year long contract would have cost. After being a member for more than 2 years with no payment issues whatsoever, a couple unfortunate circumstances happened which cause me to have to move, and I also could no longer afford the hefty monthly charge. I didn't think it would be a big deal to go in and cancel a membership which I believed to be month to month. WRONG. To my dismay I find out that The Rock wants 2 months notice to cancel a membership I was paying much more for believing it was month to month. So essentially, the minute you sign up for a month to month membership, you will be forced to pay at least 3 months before you can cancel. When I explained my extenuating circumstances to one of the staff members, including where I was moving, I was originally told that if I return with a copy of my lease and some other bill in my name at my new address I could cancel after 1 months notice. Unfortunately this was just told to me verbally. When I returned with the 2 said documents, I was then told that I could not cancel my month-to-month (supposed to be no commitment) membership because I wasn't moving more than 30 miles away. Several more phone calls later, and I was finally told I could cancel after November... paying for a full 2 months that I would not set foot in the gym, and the staff knowing full well my extenuating family and moving circumstances. At this point I was still not given anything in writing that my membership would be cancelled at the end of november. To get in writing that my (let me repeat) month-to-month no commitment membership would be cancelled I had to have an all out shouting match with one of the staff members in the middle of the gym in which I threatened to get my cousin who works for Fox News NYC involved, amongst other things. THE GYM MAY LOOK DECENT, AND UNFORTUNATELY IS ONE OF THE FEW IN THE DITMARS AREA, BUT THEY ARE WAY OVER PRICED, AND TRUST ME THEY WILL PUT YOU THROUGH HELL WHEN THE TIME COMES THAT YOU NEED TO CANCEL YOUR MEMBERSHIP. JUST DON'T DO IT TO YOURSELFDon't just take my word for it either, check out their F rating with The Better Business Bureau. http://www.bbb.org/new-york-city/Business-Reviews/health-clubs/rock-health-fitness-in-astoria-ny-1211
