Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a disease that affects the optic nerve, the part of the eye which receives images collected by the retina and sends them to the brain. Every eye maintains a certain amount of internal pressure, called intraocular pressure. When this pressure rises to abnormal levels however, it can put extra stress on the optic nerve, causing significant damage. Optic nerve damage results in loss of vision, and ultimately blindness.
Ophthalmology
Dr. Cherry grew up in East Texas in the Piney Woods community of Lufkin, Texas. Graduating at the top of his high school class with highest honors, he was selected for admission to the highly competitive Boston University Accelerated Seven Year Medical Program. He was concurrently awarded admission to the Boston University School of Medicine directly out of high school. Dr. Cherry graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston University with a degree in Medical Science. At Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Cherry decided to pursue the field of Ophthalmology since he enjoyed the medical and surgical aspects of the field, as well as the ability to greatly enhance a patient's life by providing exceptional care and detail in improving a patient's visual function.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration affects cells in the macula, which is the part of the retina responsible for central vision. Central vision is essential for most basic tasks like reading, driving, recognizing people, etc. Thus, although macular degeneration leaves peripheral vision un-impaired, it can be quite debilitating in its advanced state.
Laser Eye Surgery
If you answered “YES” to either of these questions, you may be a good candidate for LASIK or other vision corrective surgery. Before the decision can be made however, you must have an eligibility exam and consultation. The doctor will ask questions about your medical history and give a thorough eye exam designed to determine if the procedure is appropriate for your individual case. The doctor will also talk about the benefits, risks, available options, and preparation and recovery associated with the surgery to ensure that your goals and expectations are realistic.
Cataracts
A cataract is an opacity that clouds the natural lens inside the eye. Normally the path of light to the retina (where the light sensors are) is as clear as possible. When proteins that make up the lens clump together, the resulting cataract blocks some of the light, making vision blurry or hazy.
Cataract Surgery
During cataract surgery, Dr. Cherry can perform a limbal relaxing incision which relaxes and reduces astigmatism. By placing a small arcuate incision in the area of irregularity, the cornea is re-shaped and images become more focused to provide better vision without the aid of glasses or contact lenses. The limbal relaxing incision takes just a few seconds to create and can lead to improved uncorrected visual acuity after your cataract procedure.
Eye Exam
A thorough eye examination consists of a variety of standard tests designed to measure visual acuity and other vision faculties, as well as observe the health of the eye and check for common eye diseases. There is no pain or discomfort associated with an exam, and they typically take less than an hour.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) is a common disease in which blood-sugar levels are chronically too high. The disease has many related complications, and several eye diseases among them. The most common eye complication of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of adult blindness.

Ultrasound
The only way to treat a cataract is to remove it. There are no medications which remove cataracts. During a cataract procedure, your surgeon will make a microscopic incision into the eye. The cataract is then removed via ultrasound phacoemulsification. A new lens is inserted in the same place as the old lens to provide clear, crisp, focused vision. Depending upon the type of procedure and the health of your eye, you may or may not need glasses after your cataract surgery.

Blepharoplasty
Dermatochalasis is a condition in which the eyelids become droopy and heavy with excessive skin which can block the superior visual field. Eyelids which are baggy and droopy can be repaired via a procedure known as blepharoplasty. During a blepharoplasty, the excessive eyelid tissue is marked and then removed via a small incision which is hidden in your natural eyelid crease. The remaining tissue is then repaired and re-approximated to create a more youthful and natural appearance. Blepharoplasty can remove the excess skin tissue and restore full visual field so that patients can see and feel better about their appearance.
