Recently stayed here twice and was happy with the hotel and the location. It's on Spenard, a short walk to some great inexpensive restaurants, and not far from the airport. My only complaint was regarding the hotel airport shuttle. It's inconsistent at best. On arrival the first night we were told it would be 45 minutes as he'd taken some people to the train station. We therefore took a cab. The next morning we thought we'd booked an airport shuttle for 6:30 but the driver was leaving again for a different destination and wouldn't take us to the airport. We again took a cab. The next time there (a week later) I was told the shuttle would be 6-7 minutes. After 15 minutes I called the hotel again, they said "sorry, the driver had to go to the bathroom" and in fact it took another 10 minutes before he finally arrived. We were exhausted and really wanted to get to our rooms, and would have again taken a cab had we known it would be such a long wait. They do shuttles to downtown anchorage and the farmers' market, and I asked the desk when that would leave again (was told 15 minutes or so). Then when I went back down I learned that someone had needed to go earlier, so they took him right away and weren't going to be going again, so I missed my shuttle. The person I talked to was pretty blase about it and said I could take the bus which wasn't far from the hotel. That wasn't the issue, but that I was told a departure time only to learn that they'd changed it without letting me know.

I reserved a room here for one week as part of an Expedia deal that was very well priced. I was surprised at what an excellent rate they were asking for. When I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to find a beauty working the front desk. She was polite, knowledgeable, and quick to get everything in order so I could check in. I arrived very late after a long flight, and was relieved to be able to check in after midnight. There was soothing French or Russian music playing when I arrived, and the hostess was speaking Serbian. Her accent and the way she presented herself really made me smile. She showed me to my room and was always available when I needed something from the office. I was even offered a box of cookies and taught how to say a word or two in her language. This inn is in a perfect central location, within walking distance of many eateries, and has allowed me the peace and quiet I needed to launch many expeditions across this state. I've also made excellent progress on the series of novels I am writing. Hat's off to these people! I will definitely return. The lobby has very cool furniture and wall art, too, by the way.
This Bohemian-styled hostel and motel is loaded with character and stories. The name, meaning ten legged polar bear, refers to a Native American oral tradition, echoed in the large angled log pillars propping up the front of the building. The establishment features individual self-contained units, as well as dormitory or pod-style accommodation with a shared bathroom. There is also a common dining area, a common fridge to store your perishables, and in the summer season a wholesome cooked breakfast is included in the quite modest price. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the rooms are clean and tastefully, although idiosyncratically furnished. One feature that stands out is the opportunity to meet other guests in the common area, usually an eclectic mix of intrepid or budget travellers whose stories provide much better entertainment than the TV provided in each room. I would highly recommend this establishment to travellers wishing to mix with fellow travellers as well as real Alaskans.
It is cheaper compared to others, owner Mr.Ajit Singh Minhas and every staff is very very helpful, friendly and co-operative for every need. They have given us early check-in, late check-out and above all have not charged for 1st night when we could not check-in due to flight delay. 24hrs tea/coffee/juices are provided free, you may get some bread, butter, muffins etc. in case of emergency, unbelievable but it's true that Mr.Ajit & his team don't charge for any of these, their gesture and helpful approach makes them different from others. I would love to stay in any property to be owned and managed by them. You will get pickup & drop facility to Airport, market or any place, also to book car/cab for any trip, you may go through Mr.Ajit as it is much cheaper, in my case, for a group of 4, he has arranged a nice cab for Seward at a price cheaper than public bus or train. I wish Merrill Field Inn all the very best.
I stayed in one of the hotel's "pods" which was tucked on the side of the hotel. The pods were sort of like a hostel and shared a communal living room, which was a little messy when I stayed there, but it didn't matter to me. "Pod people" also share a kitchen and bathroom. It was a little cluttered-looking with everyone storing things in communal rooms, but I feel like that should be expected if you're staying in a hostel. The hotel staff was very polite and helpful. They found me an extra blanket when I asked for one, and were always very friendly. I had some trouble with my booking - seemed like their computer system wasn't happy with me prepaying on Expedia. The staff cleared it up with no hassle on my part, but my room key stopped working after the first night due to the computer error. They replaced my key right away. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience and saved a ton of money.
My mother, sister and I stayed here in june of 2014. The many reviews I read of negative remarks originally scarde me. But as budget wise travelers I chose to try it out. It was a great decision. We were checked in immediately upon arrival. After a long stay at the anchorage airport that was great! We were welcomed to the hotel, after the shuttle picked us up, and our rooms were clean. Breakfast was decent. Our bellies were filled. The shuttle even dropped us off downtown at the summer market later in the day! (Beware of prices in the market for souvenirs. ...go out and venture the city once done with the market...cheaper souveniers)Ok, back to hotel. Its worth what you pay and two stars. Expecting glamour is ridiculous but, quality of envirnoment and amenities are just right!
From the time I entered to check in I felt this place had a very homey welcoming feel. The hotel attendant at the desk made me feel very welcomed. So much so that she actually got me money back for my reservation. She even was nice enough to upgrade my room... Def went above and beyond!*** The one big thing that people who stay here complain about is the serious no drinking/no alcohol rule. As someone who drinks socially I can Def respect the owners wishes, and as an anchorage resident I understand why the rule is there. Alcohol causes bad things here! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give this place a shot! It's very reasonably priced and very unique. I would Def stay here again!
My wife and I were fortunate enough to make a four night reservation at the Alex Hotel in Anchorage. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and that bed was SOOO comfortable. Shortly after our arrival in Anchorage we had to make a significant change to our travel plans which required us to stay in the hotel for nine nights instead of four nights. Hotel management could not have been more accommodating if I had owned the hotel; they were able to confirm a nine night stay instead of four, even during a time of heavy booking. What a relief it was to have a room available when we needed it! We will look forward to staying in the Alex Hotel on our next trip to Anchorage.
First let me tell you a little about us there were 4 of us staying in one room we were there do to a tragedy that happened to my very young nephew, this was a very trying and hard time for our family. The moment we arrived at this hotel The staff was fantastic and management went above and beyond in helping us with everything we needed. The room was great bed’s real comfortable and breakfast is very good. I have stayed in many hotels and have been treated very well is most all of them But the people working and running this hotel is the best I have ever experienced. I will defiantly be staying at this Hotel again on my vacation visiting family.
I got a really good price for a very clean and spacious room. They have nice beds and nice amenities in the room. There was a heating problem, but the hotel staff did all they could to make it better (i.e. providing fans, etc.). The staff was wonderful and very solicitous helping us to navigate this new town. They told us where to go and what to see, and often printed out a Googlemap and directions for us. They even pick you up at the airport and will drive you to and fro your rental car agency. The only negative is the real modest breakfast. They do serve a lot of stuff, but ....We would certainly stay there again. Worth the money.
