My Local Stomping Grounds

Well I have seen some negative reviews around here and most of them seem to concern the door guys or inattentive bar staff. These are usually first time visitors that had a weird experience (probably due to their drunkenness) and I don't think they are giving this place a fair shake. The door guys DO have a quick turn around so you always have someone new (kinda a pain) but I have not had any of these problems and I have been coming here for 5+ years (maybe that is the reason?). During baseball season I grace this tavern usually 3-5 times a week for games.

Sure you can get a cheaper draft down at the Avenue, but the food deals here can't be beat. They run $3 burger and fries (meal size) all the time and $6 1-pound of steak tips and fries a couple times a week. Not to mention their cobb salad special and London Broil special. They will usually have a draft or bottle special on rotation from month to month and the High Life's are always cheap.

As for TV's it is a great place to watch a game. The main bar has so many LCD's that you can usually watch multiple games easily from one seat. Make sure you pick your seat wisely during football because they have the games listed for the TVs and will not change them.

I don't like going here on Fri/Sat nights though as this is the college meathead time. I like to sit with a pint and watch a game, not get a beer spilled on me while standing next to some barely legal drunk moron. If you are in to the 'cub' scene, this isn't a plcae for you but if you like to sit down, listen to some tunes, watch some sports and strike up a convo with the person sitting next to you, I am sure you will enjoy it.

If you like trivia, this is the only bar in Boston that has trivia 3 nights a week. Why do I know this? Because Will the host mentions it every damn time ;)

All-in-all it is my favorite bar in the area and I have been to them all. If you take this seriously and go, you'll probably run into me and not even know it.

The owner/bouncers are hateful and mean. They did not let my friend and I (he is from Pakistan and I am Jewish) into the bar even though we are a few years past 21...I will NEVER go back here again. This is most definitely a place to avoid.

White Horse Tavern = Pick and Choose

The White Horse has its typical negative reviews and most of them are pretty accurate. Before you even get in you'll have a miserable time because the bouncers are completely rude and act like they're the manager. Its infamous for it's ID policy where minors are usually caught at the door, but it doesn't stop there. The bartenders? They're just as bad. It's practically impossible to get a drink since you're rarely acknowledged and when you are, it's as if you're interrupting them (when they're just counting their tips half the time anyway.) They're just as rude as the bouncers. But in any case, a Tanqueray and Tonic for $4.50 is a deal and their $2 beer special (typically Miller High-Life) is always a bargain. With two bars and a pretty amazing amount of space (I never feel cramped there when I do go), it's a college bar all the way (heavily populated with BU students) with a bunch of recently turned 21 year old looking to get some action from the girls who are heavily intoxicated. Overall, it's a bar I try and avoid but if you're looking to play some pool (only two pool tables though) or catch a Red Sox game without Red Sox prices... its the place to be I guess. Honestly, avoid when you can unless you're broke and have some cash to spend on alcohol.

disgusting place with rodents everywhere and lowclass bouncers and people. this place is def the worst place a college student can go to and it is crawling with underage freshman boys with fakeIDs

WHITE HORSE TAVERN...epitome of boredom on a weekend night. it could not get any worse with white horse. there are rude bouncers, unattractive guests who believe that they are the most important people alive. TRUST me you do not want to go to white horse. this place is absolutely horrendous in every sense of the word.

Great place

I go there EVERY Friday early evening for a good burger (White Horse and Mushroom are my favorites) or Cobb salad, and for a good draft beer. Need I say more? Yes, I also like to watch the games and there are lots of big screens there. The service is great and fast. The caviot: I'm talking about early evening, later on (after 8-9pm) it becomes packed and loud, not the kind of place I like.

Crappy service - tons of tools - cheap food specials.

Ok - seriouslly, this place is PACKED with tools. And the service is HORRIBLE. I have never had good service here, be it on a late night or middle of the day when there are only 5 tables. The waitstaff always disapears for long periods of time, never check on you, take forever to get a beer, etc. etc. I have been living around that bar for 4 years, never changed. The food specials ($4 burger [used to be $3] and the steak tips and Cobb salad are good. But the $7 Harpoon and total crud service make up for it.

Yes, btw, the bouncers are idiots here, always have gotten attitude from the bouncers. Just sets the tone wrong for walking in... and seriouslly packed with tools with red sox hats on, most everyone is about 5 feet tall , so you'll stand out if your a taller guy.

Warning: obnoxious bouncers, drugged drinks, poorly mixed drinks, awful service.
My friend was drugged here last Thursday night - girls be very careful.

Never go there again!!!

The waiter is very rude and mean, and service is bad. They only have cheap and spoiled foods. I will never go there again.

Stop complaining about the White Horse bouncers.

This is to address all the people complaining about the bouncers.

No. I do not work for The White Horse, but can understand where they are coming from, having been a bouncer myself.

1. The bouncers have a job to do. It is not to be nice to you.
It is to keep the owner from being in court, because of underage drinking, or safety reasons inside.

2. Most bouncers will be quite friendly if you actually talk to them and even possibly befriend them.

3. Know this ? the owner(s) does not care what the bouncers say to you. Calling up and complaining will do nothing.

4. If you get irate and rude with the person at the door, you will not come in. Nobody cares if you?re a lawyer. Go ahead and take them to court. The bouncer won?t pay any of the money.
This also applies to ?Do you know who I am??. Think of all the sh*t they take all night, plus being punched in the face routinely.

5. ID?s ? The doorguy doesn?t know you. He?s paid to hold you up and be 100% sure. If you don?t like it, go somewhere else. Saying, ?Look at me? or ?I?m old enough? is not proof. Either is knowing the info front to back. Underage people do the same thing. That?s what makes it hard.
Yes, it may be your picture. It could also be your older brother though, or a completely self made id with your real pic in it. RELAX. He?s not busting you nads on purpose (unless you screw with him).
They wouldn?t go through the trouble unless they get a lot of fakes.

6. VIP ? Yes. There is. Don?t get mad if you wait for 20 minutes and someone else walks right in. Off-duty workers, family members, friends, celebrities, other bar owners, or girls that show off their goods all fit this category. Deal with it. It?s one of the perks.

7. Again. Girls. DO get on the VIP. No bouncer will refuse.

So. Quit whining and befriend a bouncer. I did.

Brian D. is really cool.

Last week I went to White Horse in Brighton and witnessed a guy (with lil man syndrome apparently) sl@p a GIRL in the face. And then he proceeded to sl@p her bf. A stupid fight ensued, and at the end the guy was allowed to STAY at the bar with his friend, while the girl and her bf left with a pack of ice on the girls face. SOOOOO messed up! Apparently the lil guy knew the bouncers/bartenders that worked there. Anyways, I'm never going back there, and I'd hope none of you would ever want to go to a place like that either, esp. if you're a girl. Guys like that should be kicked where it hurts, and shoved in a ditch digusted with him, his friend, and the management at the White Horse.

Mediocre bar, Terrible doorstaff

I'll add to the list of people who found the bouncers to be superflously rude, even for bouncers. The food and drinks were ok but nothing spectacular - no amazing variety of beers on tap, no exciting original cocktails, food is also nothing special - but they have most of the basics. Prices are reasonable, but you pretty much get what you pay for. Overall I would rate it average if not for the bouncers. They physically assaulted me over what had been a minor, purely verbal misunderstanding about going outside and coming back in, and refused to talk reasonably with me.

I have lived in the Allston/Brighton area for a while and have went to White Horse a bunch of times just because I keep having hope in them. I have finally realized that they are always going to be a horrible bar because of the rude bouncers who check your ID for an hour because it makes them feel tough or cool (apparently the job isn't very rewarding so they take it out on the people who just want to come and have a good time), the poor service, and the negative attitudes from all of the service staff. I have been in the restaurant business for a while and I have been to a lot of bars/restaurants and this is the only place that I have seen so many people talk about the poor service they give and it has been the main reason (besides the crappy food and expensive drinks) that people don't come back.

Never Go There! Worst Tavern Ever, They Are Mean & Prejudiced!

So, Basically I was visiting my friends from out of town and we went to the White Horse Tavern. My friend from Pakistan showed the bouncer his ID, which was valid and was REFUSED entry into the bar. I was next and I am from Louisiana, so I took out my Driver's License to show them that I am 23 and they told me that it was a fake and refused to give it back to me. They would not tell me why, but they REFUSED to give me my REAL Louisiana Driver's License back. I was forced to call the Police, who never came. Basically, the Bouncer's and the evil bar manager Ann Palmer refused to talk to me, they had proven me guilty without letting me show them how innocent I was. I waited outside for the police for 2 hours, because they wouldn't talk to me without them. Never go there. BOYCOTT THE WHITE HORSE TAVERN! They don't even let people who are actually of age into the bar AND they'll steal your REAL ID and refuse to give it back to you! They don't even have an ID scanner, the bar manager said that she ""trusts the bouncer's intuition"".

Good Spot

I am new to the area and had a friend tell me I had to try this place. He was right, I was not let down. The food is a great value. On Sun/Mon/Tue you can order off the $3 menu as long as you're drinking. Relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff, check it out for yourself!

DJs Krucial and Chu make white horse #1 on Thurs.

I've been going to the white horse for about a year or so. I used to go to have a couple drinks and watch a game...a couple of months ago, I went on a Thursday night with some friends and we've been going regularly on that night since. They have 2 really talented dj's, DJ KRUCIAL & DJ CHU, and they play all the hip-hop, reggae, and Rnb you WANT to hear, not the BS you normally hear. I highly recommend you check it out...and they use all VINYL!

Best place in Allston

I live right around the corner from this place and have probably been there at least 50 times. The food and service is consistently very good, and the overall value is great. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a casual place to relax in a freindly and laid-back bar.

A place were everyone calls you Norm

The friendly staff and laid back atmosphere provide a great dinning and drinking environment. I am always taken aback by how welcome the whole staff make my friends and I feel. It is the weekday after work spot or the weekend let down your hair and slam back a shot place to be. I have yet to find a better meal at such a reasonable price. If your looking for a great night out and don't feel like paying the downtown premium, look no further you've found your watering hole.
