Moving takes a lot of planning, and that includes knowing what your moving rights are. Read on to find more about your moving rights and what you can do to prepare.
We've put together a small list to get you started on your journey -- and the first step starts with a single box.
This company was supposed to store my items while I lived overseas. Upon my return I found they had used my washer, dryer and refrigerator without my consent. They also made poor repairs to the refrigerator (changed hoses and left exposed as well as caulked the bottom seams). Do not use them if you want your stuff stored. The dryer had hair which was not ours (wrong color strands in the filter) and finally the washer was drained before storage but when we got it back it had rust in it, wet filters and damp detergent granules in the soap tray.
A horrible decision that I will regret for a very long time. Movers showed up an hour late in a truck that was too small. I told them that although we had a 3 bedroom house, we had a lot of large antique furniture and stuff in the garage, so they needed to assume 4+ bedrooms. My husband told them the truck would be too small but they insisted they could pack it well enough. The movers were nice, and hardworking, but they were not at all careful with our stuff. My husband requested they put the large furniture in first so that when they ran out of room, we could move the boxes ourselves. They didn’t and ran out of room. The 2 or 3 pieces we wanted moved the most, now wouldn’t fit into the truck at all! They offered to drop off a load , then come back and get the rest. They’re paid by the hour and we lived 2 hours away. No thanks. They brought our stuff to our temporary storage unit. They dropped box after box off the truck. Sometimes, an entire dolly full of boxes would crash. And, a unit that should have been twice as big as we needed was full to the front because they put it in there so poorly. We spent hours taking stuff out and re-arranging so that we could rent a trailer and bring up the rest of our belongings to put into storage. As we did, we noticed that the top of the washing machine was dented in. The washer was in perfect condition prior to this. The next week I received a phone call saying my check had bounced. I had made an agreement with the owner and the scheduler that they would not cash the check until the end of the week when our money came through from the sale of our house. My bank charged me an overdraft fee for a check that was postdated and never should have been cashed. Then the lady (I can’t remember her name, the spouse of the owner) called yelling at me, telling me that I needed to resolve it and I wrote a “hot check” and needed to fix it. I told her the money was in there now, and I had no problems paying for services but that I wasn’t available at that moment when she wanted me to come in and she said she wouldn’t put the check through again. She threatened to turn me into the DA then HUNG UP ON ME. I have never in my life dealt with someone with such rude customer service! This lady was awful. I then called the owner (the guy) and told him what was going on, and he was professional. He said he remembered our agreement and it was probably his fault and they would waive the overdraft fee. We set up a time we could meet so I could pay cash and be done with it. When I went to meet, he was over an hour late. I paid and figured I would just put this whole bad experience behind me. Until now, when we started moving things from storage to our home. We have found entire boxes that have had glassware or dishes where everything is broken. This isn’t my first time moving, I know how to pack and packed things with care. Yet there was glass all over when we started moving boxes. Several pieces of antique furniture have dents or chunks out of the wood. The more that we move into this house, the more I find broken, ruined or damaged. Hiring the Moving Guys was one of the worst mistakes I’ve made. And I’m writing this review to help others so that they will not make the same mistake.

Do not use them! I have moved three times in the course of my military career and they are by far the worst company I have ever dealt with. They have no customer service skills. PLEASE BE AWARE: THERE ARE BETTER OPTIONS OUT THERE.

That's because the movers are technically transferring items between state lines, which means they'll be responsible for having the correct licensing and insurance in place.
Long-distance moves are much more complicated to plan, typically requiring you to pay numerous extra expenses for everything from shipping items to renting storage space.

No matter what type of move you're making, you can reach out to prospective moving companies for estimates - this is the best way to determine how expensive your move will be based on where you live and what services you're looking for. Typically, the moving company will send someone to your home who will do a walk through of each room, making note of the furniture, valuables and other belongings in each one. Then, he or she will provide an estimate. The exact amount you pay may, however, be different from the amount declared in the estimate. That's where the type of contract comes in.
Nonbinding vs. Binding Contracts
For any move, a company will ask you to sign a contract. It's crucial to know exactly what type of contract you're signing, though, to understand how much you can expect to pay. In basic terms, there are two types of moving contracts: binding and nonbinding. Binding, as well as binding not-to-exceed, contracts are the most preferable for people hiring movers. For both local and long-distance moving companies, AMSA is another good place to check out a company's legitimacy. Moving companies aren't required to be an AMSA member, but the ones that are have committed to the association's rules and regulations, which protect both the companies and the consumers hiring them. If a company isn't an AMSA member, that doesn't mean it isn't reputable, but an AMSA membership is a clear indication of legitimacy.
