Just like the planning that went into your vacation, there is planning needed before boarding your pet. Here are some dos and don'ts to help make the process a little easier.
I have only been here one time (last week). But it was so refreshing, I have been looking for a nice place to bring my cats when I noticed this clinic (which was right around the corner from me). I called to make an appointment, and I was greeted nicely and they set me up to see Dr. Hey at my convenience. Everything went smoothly. The receptionist were very nice, helped me fill out all the necessary paper work. They called to remind me of my appointment the day before, they even reminded me to bring in any important medical information or vaccination history (which I would have totally not have brought). Dr. Hey was very prompt with his scheduled time. I think I had talked with him personally the entire 30 minute appointment. I had arrived a little early and a technician had checked me in. I was very impressed with how knowledgable the technician was. He made sure I knew what we were doing today (a check up and vaccines). He then asked if I was only any kind of flea or heartworm control. Well little did I realize that cats could get heartworms too!!! (It may be obvious to some... but not for me!) He explained that there was a prevention that not only protected my cats from fleas, but from heartworm too. He even gave me a pamphlet on it, BUT he explained Everything!!! Needless to say I got that prevention (mosquito season is coming up and they are the ones who transfer heartworms to our pets). Next Dr. Hey came in. He review my cats long medical history. Asked some follow up questions and gave me a list of options that he would recommend based on what he saw in my cats history, but were not necessary. He then thoroughly examined my cat. He checked the tips of the ears down to the tip of his tail. He told me that my cat looked great and then vaccinated him right in front of me. He answered all of my questions, he explained everything to me. He made me feel very confident that my animal was in good hands. I would recommend this hospital to everyone!!!
I feel everyone can learn from a review negative or positive. Once in awhile you read something that is completely off base however. In the case of the review dated 5/26/2009 "Wouldn't you want to know" it was spelled misspelled "Woldnt" I feel it necessary to respond. I am the current office manager at Ellison Drive Animal Hospital and I have felt very proud of the ethics, professionalism and manner in which Dr. Lori Curd and Relief Doctors and the entire staff treat their clients and patients. I have found us to go beyond the call of duty when it comes to trying to prepare for the difficult part of treatment for their pets, that being the financial part. We prepare estimates and do our very best to tell them everything that can be eliminated if needed, starting with the best course of treatment first, then reduce by the client's availability or limitations of funds. We offer care credit, we prioritize and make every effort to do what is best for the client and their pet. It is important to write this so that potential customers reading this will understand the source. I looked back at the date and the pet's name and it coincides with emotional termination of a prior employee. We realize that this was posted many months ago and unfortunately was just brought to my attention. FYI: We have asked that the person involved be notified through the "report abuse" option on the posting. We have ask her to do the right thing and remove the review. We really hope that you will take the time to come in and find out for yourself. Dr. Curd is passionate about helping you to take care of your pet and provide the best possible care.
My family and I have been coming to Rigsby Veterinary clinic when Dr. Burchers was the veterinary. Dr. Luke Proctor and Dr. Sheryl Proctor are the only 2 doctors that see my 2- senior dogs. They are both excellent Doctors but if the staff doesn't improve I am sorry to say I have no problems asking for copies of my dogs records and going elsewhere. The suggestion I do have is a better office manager, pleasant receptionists and more educated technicians.... At one point they had a very pleasant clinic manager by the name of Sarah L... She always acknowledged me by my last name, ( the 2 front desk employees never can remember my name nor my pets even if I had just been there the day before . Better yet I don't even get acknowledged when walking in to the clinic.. ) was very people friendly and compassionate employee. Whenever checking in for an appt with Sarah or one of her receptionist I NEVER had to repeat what my visit at the office was for that day... These 2 girls that they have now are just flat out ignorant. They keep each other humored with none related work conversions instead of checking up with the clients in the waiting room...God forgive you call up to the client because you will be left and sometimes even forgot on hold. I can’t even count the many times this has happen to me. Now on the other hand there is 2 (and I mean only 2 ) technicians ( Kristy and Emily ) that are very thorough and i always make sure it only one of them that see my 2 dogs. Over all I can only say good things about the Doctors and the 2 technicians... I do hope that Dr. Proctor does read this and replaces some of his staff like he has been doing to his clinic.
I took my Cats to Dr. Ehrlund & her husband (now deceased) as a child and loved the care that they both showed especially when one of my cat's kittens had a condition that they couldn't treat that required us taking him to the vet school. I've recently reconnected w/ them and Dr. Ehrlund is just as wonderful now as she was then!! I know that there are some reviews on the web that are negative about her but I think some of that may have to do with a VERY SELECT FEW of her office staff. Beyond that, once you talk, CALMLY & RATIONALLY about any problems that you may have, Dr. Ehrlund is MORE THAN WILLING TO LISTEN & WORK OUT A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM!! Recently when our youngest cat cut her right (wrist) front paw VERY DEEPLY during a time when we had some financial difficulties, she worked things out with me so that she adjusted the treatment course so that Patches still got the necessary treatment to allow the deep wound to heal but did so w/o hitting my pocketbook too hard! I did have a small problem with one of her office staff when I came back to pick Patches up but as I wrote earlier, once I talked privately, CALMLY & rationally to Dr. Ehrlund, she took care of the problem and spoke with the staff member so that that problem wouldn't happen with anyone else again! I think that much of the negative reviews on the web about Dr. Ehrlund are WAY OVERBLOWN. She really is an EXCELLENT VET who has been in continual practice in NW San Antonio for the last 30 years!!
You simply cannot find a better veterinary hospital than this one. Doctors McGlothlin and Fehlis simply are the best vets I've encountered, and I've encountered a few. Dr. McGlothlin has been our vet since 2009, and we have her to thank for giving us 25 additional months with our minpin when we all thought he would die from renal disease. When we had to have him euthanized just yesterday, Dr. McGlothlin was the most caring, sensitive. expert professional we could have hoped for, yet she was straightforward about what would happen and we appreciated it all so much. We also had occasion to chat with Dr. Fehlis on one occasion about our other dog and found her to be similarly professional and caring. The CCVH staff is second to NONE. There is not a single person there to whom we would not entrust the life of our dogs. In fact, several of them housesat our older dog and we had not a single moment of anxiety about the little guy while we were gone. The facility is state of the art technically, and the docs and techs truly know how to use them to best effect. But beyond that, it also has a room for pet parents who are having a pet put to sleep. It is comfortable, very private, and can be accessed through a rear door so grieving parents don't have to endure walking through the waiting room. My husband and I love and admire these people and we wouldn't entrust our animals to anyone else.
In 2009 we boarded our Field Springer Spaniel at a local facility, her first time ever being boarded. My husband was already on a plane headed to LA on business and I to Va. for a family wedding. Two hours after dropping her off I received a call (as I was boarding the plane) that our dog had been seriously injured. She was taken to their vet and 4 days later when my husband was back home he took her to CCV which was our first visit to the practice. She had to have another surgery and this time we knew she was in good hands. My husband called me 2 times a day for two weeks to give me a report and could not stop talking about how wonderful Dr. Fehlis was being to him and Abby. This past July our sweet girl suddenly became ill. After a week or so of testing Dr. Fehlis told us she has Addison Disease. She said we should call with any questions or concerns and we did as well as the staff calling us to check on her. The entire staff is friendly and professional. We used to live 5 minutes away, recently moved and we now drive 25 minutes for visits. I love seeing both Dr. Fehlis and Dr. McGlothlin. They are both wonderful vets. I know one day we will move back East closer to family and I will miss them terribly. My husband and I have great trust in them and great respect for them. You cannot go wrong by using CCV!
I've been taking my animals to Dr. Beissner for 7 years,being from the neighborhood. Very reasonable, Seems as time goes on, the Dr. isn't quite as friendly or attentive/sympathetic. I feel rushed when asking him questions, just today I took my fat cat in because he had been sneezing a lot. The Dr. came in, and my cat freaks out, he does not like the Dr. The cat was very stressed, and the Dr didn't care about calming him down. My Kitty's temp is not taken, but the Dr goes and gets an injectible antibiotic, starts to put it in kittys hip, cat jumps and hisses, makes the Dr jump, he tries to inject again, same thing happens, and he sternly says "put him up (back in carrier)", and we were done....? I asked the Dr if he got all the medicine in the cat, he says yes. He didn't tell me the shot was $55, I feel he should have discussed the price, and I think most of it went on his fur, it was wet by injection site. He seemed really short and impatient. I've spent over $1000 over 7 years, but still feel like a stranger in there. I think I'll be looking for a different vet, someone that cares for my cats like their own, with a pleasant demeanor, and doesn't make me feel like I'm bothering them..
I recently had an experience at I-10 Pet Emergency that I wanted to share. I had a 12 year old diabetic German Shepherd who inexplicably began having labored breathing. I went to my regular veterinarian at Hill Country Animal Hospital with Dr. Lori Stephens and she recommended that I go to I-10 for further diagnostics and hospitalization since it was a Saturday. Long story short, my dog ended up having a tumor in her heart and had to be euthanized but I cannot say enough good things about the staff at I-10. The nurses who worked with me, Brian and Katie were so wonderful. They took great care of my dog and also great care of me and my husband. The compassion they showed for my dog really meant a lot. They did everything they could to make her comfortable until a diagnosis was reached and we could make a decision. Not only were the nurses great, but the doctor, Dr. Heron was absolutely wonderful! I can't say enough about how great this emergency facility is and how great the staff is. No one hopes to have an emergency with their pet, but I know that if I ever do, I will definitely go back to this place. Thanks to the staff for all the great work they do!
I cannot say enough positive things about the Alamo Feline Health Center! Due to the utter negligence of the general vet I had been seeing, my cat was literally at death's door. His lungs were collapsed and he was suffering from histoplasmosis (a really nasty fungal disease). On the recommendation of one of the workers at the emergency animal hospital, I brought my cat to Alamo Feline Health Center. If it hadn't been for the excellent care provided by Dr. Norsworthy and his staff, my cat would not be here with us today. Dr. Norsworthy and his staff are extremely knowledgeable and friendly; they actually care about the health and well-being of your cat and thoroughly discuss any issues with you. While my cat was in surgery, they called to give me status updates, and again after he came home to make sure he was doing okay. Their office is always clean and inviting, and wait times are kept to a minimum. Being that it is an all cat facility, you don't have to worry about the added stress of a vet visit of loud dogs and other strange animals. I have taken my cats to many vets over the years, and this is, by far, the best place we have ever been.
If you’re looking for a caring and loving vet Dr. Mac is the vet for you. I have been going to him for 8 ½ years. I put all my faith and trust into him when it comes to my animals. He saved my dog twice from dying. He will never give up on you or your pet. If I ever needed him for anything he always answered my calls or returned my call within a short time. He will be honest and open and tell you the truth about your pet. If he feels a specialist is best for your pet he will refer you to them. He is open to your suggestions or ideas. He always made all my pets feel special when they came in. His vet techs are the best. They are very knowledgeable on vet care. They are courteous and kind. They knew my dog was super anxious about coming in so they would let me bring her in right before x-rays or any procedure instead of coming early and dropping your pet off. He will work with you to make your pet feel comfortable. He loves your animals as much as you do. My dog Sarah recently passed away and he was as heartbroken as I was, as well as his staff. Now that is a caring and loving vet. So don’t hesitate to check Dr. Mac out. You won’t regret it.
Choosing the right vet for your pet can be tough. After all, your furry friend can't tell you how he or she feels about the doctor. Even though you're not the one treated by the vet, whoever your animal sees is obviously your decision. Since many veterinary diseases and injuries can turn into emergencies very quickly, it's important to have a go-to vet. This way, you can ensure you'll know whom to see when your animal needs care.
Speak to your friends and family about vets who've treated their pets. You can even talk to your groomer or an animal shelter worker for referrals. When you visit the clinics you've been referred to, check that the facility is clean, animals are separated and the staff is calm and courteous. Not all clinics are American Animal Hospital Association accredited. This accreditation isn't a legal necessity, though a clinic that's AAHA-accredited is guaranteed to offer high-quality medical care. To receive accreditation, the clinic has to meet the AAHA's standards in the areas of facility, equipment and quality care.
If you're looking for a specialist, you want to make sure he or she is board-certified to practice in that specific area of animal medicine. You'll want to make sure your vet is also convenient to visit, so there are factors to take into account.
The type of animal you own should play a part in which vet you choose as well. While your options are vast if you have a dog or cat, you may have to visit an avian clinic for your bird or an exotics clinic for your snake.

A vet assistant works alongside the veterinarian and helps out around the clinic. In some cases, they may assist vets in surgery or restrain struggling animals during tests or lab work. The everyday duties of a veterinary assistant include; monitoring and caring for animals after surgery, keeping medical records, cleaning animals' teeth, feeding and bathing them, cleaning cages, sterilizing surgical equipment, giving animals medication, collecting samples for testing and performing laboratory tests, and offering grief counseling to pet owners.
It's a good idea to bring your pet to the vet regularly. This way, he or she becomes familiar and comfortable with the care providers, and you can stay on top of your pet's preventative care. If the animal is small enough, bring it to the office in a carrier. Just as you visit the doctor for a yearly check up, you should bring in your pet for regular check ups as well. During a routine veterinary visit, the vet will probably begin by asking you if there have been any changes in your pet's behavior or habits.
The vet will then take your pet's vitals, like weight, temperature, pulse and respiration rate, and perform a physical examination of the pet. Some pet owners can't afford insurance for their pet, so there are other options to make paying for surprise pet visits as easy as possible. Some pet stores have wellness plans - which tend to be much cheaper than an insurance policy - that offer shots, check ups, screenings and discounts on various procedures your pet may need. A lot of veterinary offices offer payment plans for pricey procedures as well, as long as you have decent credit history. For a last-ditch option, there are even privately funded organizations that offer pet owners financial aid for their pet's treatments.
