The atmosphere and food were very good. The service was awful. The hostess acted as if she had just had a root canal. We were shown to our table and the menus were dropped on the table. Our server came over approx 15 minutes later and did not tell us anything about the wine list or any of the specials. We ordered our drinks and another 15 minutes went by before our iced tea was brought to the table. Our server took our order and we did not see her again until our food arrived. It felt as though she dropped our food on the table and ran off. She did not return until I got up and asked the hostess to send the manager over with a refill for the tea, more tarter sauce, and ketchup. Another 10 minutes went by and our server finally brought some tarter sauce and had to be asked to refill the tea glasses and bring ketchup. The manager never bothered to come over to our table so he/she will never know that his server cannot handle more than 2 tables! I may give this place another chance since the food was really good. I am very disappointed in the server and the manager.
This place has a cafe vibe with about 10 to 15 tables. It's not your typical colorful restaurant; granite tables, stone walls and tasteful decor. The carne asada is amazing! I had a taco with rice and beans and by boyfriend ordered the buritto with everything on it, which comes with a side of peppers & carrots in vinegar (my boyfriend said it was a staple of true mexican places and very good). The taco was simple, but very good: meat, onion, and cilantro wrapped in a homemade tortilla & served with fresh lemon wedges. The burritto was a bigger version and included rice and beans. Both were good, but I like the taco better. There wasn't anything special about the rice and beans. Next time, I'll order two tacos instead. The homemade chips and salsa were also very good. Bottom line: great food for great prices in a nice setting. We'll absolutely be going back.
My husband and I have been eating at El Rodeo since they first opened on East Kellogg close to the old Kmart. We have spent many special occasions there and have had the best time! We know many of the original servers and consider them our extended family. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to enjoy good Mexican food as a very reasonable price. I have never had a bad experience there! Sincerely, Shell & John Porter (Still there loyal customers even though we're now living in California)
