Ultrasound
When the carotid arteries are blocked, it can affect brain function and may even lead to stroke. Symptoms for carotid arteries include slurred speech, weakness of arm and/or leg and blindness in one eye. Often there are no advanced warning signs. A diagnosis can typically be made through ultrasound examination of the carotid arteries or an angiogram.
MRI
A diagnosis of carotid artery stenosis is made with an ultrasound. Sometimes CT or MRI testing may also be necessary. Your vascular specialist will work with you to discuss your options and the best course of treatment for your diagnosis.
X-Rays
Computed Tomography
Your healthcare team will determine the necessary tests for a proper diagnosis. Most common for reviewing heart valve problems is an echocardiogram. Other tests could include an exercise test, chest x-rays, CT scan, or an exploratory cardiac cath/catheterization.
Chemotherapy
We have also established treatment regimens such as heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy. We are the first place here in Wichita to have started that, and that also allows for advanced treatment to be given to patients with advanced tumors of certain types. ”

As we get older, calcium/mineral deposits can build up on the aortic valve causing them to become stiff and not open completely.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a minimally invasive surgery for patients with severe narrowing of the aortic valve. Restricted blood flow forces the heart to work harder and can lead to heart failure, fainting, irregular heartbeat and cardiac arrest. Without treatment, 50% of patients with severe aortic stenosis will survive only two years from the onset of their symptoms.
