- Historical Washington County, Penn., formed in 1781 and named after the first president of the United States, is an area rich with history and many exciting local attractions. The low cost of living is second only to the high quality of life. Washington County is located in southwestern Pennsylvania. The current population is more than 208,000 with a land area of 863.6 square miles. The county seat is the city of Washington. The Monongahela River separates the county from both Westmoreland and Fayette counties.
