Neil's Carpet Cleaning

This is the second time we have used Neil’s Carpet Cleaning service. We obtained his name last year, from a friend who has used him for years. Neil does an excellent job. He is professional, friendly and very reasonably prices. Our carpets and upholstery look like new after he works his magic. Neil has cleaned our bedroom carpets, upholstery and a wool area rug we bought second hand. The wool rug looks like new! We highly recommend Neil for your cleaning needs. Everything is so fresh and clean!

We recently called Neil to clean or sofa and ottomans and he did a good job.
Unfortunately that's where the good news ends. We arrived home to find that he decided to clean our brand new wool area rug and in doing so ruined it.
He first claimed he was doing us a favor by including it in the cleaning at no charge, then when I showed him that he had ruined the pile by doing so he handed us his bill and left our home.
My wife and I agreed that under the circumstances we could not pay him for his work until he had taken responsibility for his decision to clean the rug and reimburse us the difference between the cost of the wool rug and the charges for the sofa cleaning.
Then instead of resolving the issue in a professional manner, he left a letter at our door stating in part that "he wasn't told not to clean the wool rug."
Really?! By his logic was I supposed to tell him about everything that I didn't
Want him to clean?
As of this review he continues to defend his decision to do something he was never asked or authorized to do, but I'm the bad guy for asking him to make it right?!
Everybody makes mistakes including myself, but isn't it better to take responsibility for your own actions and accept the consequences of those actions?
I'm happy to give him 3 stars for the cleaning of the sofa, but it's unconscionable that I'm stuck with a ruined wool rug because he couldn't ( or wouldn't) make a simple phone call to ask the question!
