As part of his continuing efforts to remain an accomplished trial lawyer, Dave spends hundreds of hours each year teaching and coaching students in Baylor Law School’s renowned Advocacy Program. Because of his accomplishments in the courtroom, Dave was invited to become a candidate in the esteemed Jaworski Fellows program at Baylor Law School, where he works with some of the top trial lawyers in the nation to help train future Baylor Lawyers in Practice Court. Dave is also an adjunct professor at Baylor School of Law, where he works with the advocacy program, coaches national mock trial competition teams, teaches in the Criminal Law Capstone Boot Camp program, and teaches annually at the Academy of the Advocate study abroad program in St. Andrews, Scotland.

Murder
David N. Deaconson has been a member of the law firm of Pakis, Giotes, Page & Burleson, P. C. since joining the firm in September 1986. He became a shareholder in 1990. Prior to joining the firm, Dave started his career as a trial lawyer by serving as an assistant district attorney in McLennan County, where his success in the courtroom enabled him to try multiple capital murder and murder trials by his third year out of law school. By his second year as a lawyer, Dave became the chief Crimes against Children prosecutor. Dave has been recognized as the Outstanding Young Lawyer by the Waco-McLennan County Young Lawyers Association, served as president of both the Waco-McLennan County Young Lawyers Association and the Waco-McLennan County Bar Association, and served on the inaugural committee that created the Pro Bono program in McLennan County.
Tessa will be working and assisting our Corporate Law practice with Rodney Chamness and Chase Smith. She will also be contributing to the Estate Planning and Elderly Law practice areas with Carlie Gause. Dave Deaconson served a second time as co-counsel for Jackson Walker during the recent trial defense for Roku on a patent infringement and intellectual property litigation case.
Dave has both picked the jury for and tried well over two hundred jury trials, including, complex commercial litigation, complicated medical negligence cases, employment discrimination and termination claims, real estate title and boundary disputes, eminent domain, breach of contract and breach of fiduciary cases, and murder and major crimes. His trial experience in the DA’s office enabled Dave to transition smoothly and quickly to trying diverse civil cases. He has tried multiple complex commercial litigation cases to verdicts in which his client was awarded in excess of $1,000,000 and has also successfully defended cases where the Plaintiff was seeking millions of dollars.
Employment Litigation
Marcus Mataga joined the firm in March 2015. Marcus received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree, summa cum laude, in Finance from Texas A&M University in 2008, and his Juris Doctor degree from Baylor University School of Law in 2012. Marcus’ primary practice areas include Commercial Litigation, Employment Litigation, and General Civil Litigation. In his free time, Marcus enjoys drawing, playing ultimate Frisbee, and exploring Waco with his dog, Wendell.
John Burleson worked at the firm from 1981 till his passing 1n 2022, 41+ years. John received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Baylor University in 1979 and his Juris Doctor degree from Baylor University School of Law in 1981. His primary areas of practice include Business and Commercial Matters, Real Estate Law, and Mergers, Acquisitions and Divestitures. John has personally handled over 500 separate acquisition and divestiture transactions over his 40+ year career with the firm. John has also been recognized as Waco’s Top Business Attorney by the Wacoan in previous years. John was involved in the Waco community in many different ways but would be known most for service at Columbus Baptist Church and The Baylor Bear Foundation. He was a huge supporter of Baylor Athletics and loved the Bears, Sic’ Em! He is survived by Wife Debra and their 3 kids.
