Preventive Care

We recommend the every horse have an oral exam performed at least a once yearly to check for abnormalities. Most horses will benefit from a yearly intervention, however it may not be necessary in all cases. Some horses with good, level cheek teeth and a normal wear pattern can go for two years between dentals. On the other hand, older horses or those with significant abnormalities may need to be done twice yearly, or even more frequently.

Vaccination
Our wellness program includes three plans designed for horses with varying needs: Basic, Performance, and Senior. In these bundled, discounted plans, we include thorough examinations, dentistry, essential vaccinations, and laboratory tests. These plans allow you to lock in a discounted rate for preventative care services and procedures, ensuring your horses get the best possible care throughout the year. These services can be scheduled anytime during 2022 after your horse is enrolled.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Dr. Matt grew up in the small town of Boonville, NY, in the foothills of the Adirondack mountains. He obtained both his bachelors degree in Biology and his veterinary doctorate at Cornell University. After graduating in 2008, Dr. Kornatowski moved south to Virginia for an internship at a multi-doctor equine referral practice. During his extended internship, he was responsible for the primary care of in-hospital medicine and surgery cases, emergency medicine and critical care, in addition to ambulatory services. Dr. Kornatowski developed his interests in ophthalmology, dentistry and emergency medicine. Additionally, he gained significant experience in surgery and critical care. He then worked as a racetrack veterinarian in Western NY before deciding to go into practice for himself. Nutritional Counseling
Comprehensive Examination
We use positive reinforcement (a combination of verbal praise and small food rewards) and gradual step-wise introduction of stimuli to habituate horses to procedures that they may be averse to. Common aversions include needle-shyness, trailer phobias, or fear of basic physical examination procedures.

Illness Treatment

Parasites Treatment and Control
At Twin Pines Equine, our goal is to create individualized deworming plans for horses. We base this mainly on their parasite load. However, we need to consider other factors as well, including herd size, stress, systemic diseases. We calculate parasite load through the use of Fecal Egg Counts. These are microscopic evaluations of the manure to determine the amount of parasite eggs present.
Pain Management
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
We’ll be discussing the anatomy, physiology and disease processes of the equine respiratory tract. From the nose, to the lungs, there’s actually a lot that goes on in between, and therefore a lot that can go wrong. Join us!

We offer saddle fitting exams in conjunction with a complete lameness exam, or alone. We are happy to look at all types of saddles.

Wound and Fracture Care

Veterinary Surgery
Surgical procedures can be done under standing sedation in association with nerve blocks or under general anesthesia. We are able to provide short anesthetic and standing surgical procedures on the farm. However more extensive procedures will require referral. The procedures we offer typically take less than an hour to perform and are fairly routine. For instance, here’s a brief list of surgical services...
Spaying and Neutering
Many horses will need some form of surgery in their life. Oftentimes, we just need to suture a wound back together. However there are other procedures that are often quite necessary. such as castration.

X-Ray
At Twin Pines Equine, we offer Digital Radiography (DR). DR makes it possible to take x-rays (radiographs) on your farm, so we get instant results! We can manipulate the digital image if necessary, then email it to you in order to maintain a complete record.
Microchipping
Being able to identify your horse is important, and microchipping is a great way to do that. After we place the microchip, we give you the information to complete the registration. You can easily register your microchip online for a small fee. The result is a lifetime of protection. To have us microchip your horse, please contact our office.
