Macular Degeneration
Age Related Macular Degeneration Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the most common causes of poor vision after age 60. The visual symptoms of AMD involve loss of central vision. While peripheral vision is unaffected, one loses the sharp, straight-ahead vision necessary for driving, reading, recognizing faces, and generally looking at detail. Imagine being able to see a clock on the wall but unable to make out the time or unable to read because you could not see parts of words on the page.

Cataracts
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's naturally clear lens. The lens focuses light rays on the retina — the layer of light-sensing cells lining the back of the eye — to produce a sharp image of what we see. When the lens becomes cloudy, light rays cannot pass through it easily, and vision is blurred.

Eye Exam
Eye doctors use a wide variety of tests and procedures to examine your eyes. These tests range from simple ones, like having you read an eye chart, to complex tests, such as using a high-powered lens to visualize the tiny structures inside of your eyes. Regardless, when you have an eye exam, it will usually take anywhere from half an hour to an hour or more, depending on the doctor, his or her caseload and the number and complexity of tests required for your eyes.

Dr. Johnson completed his undergraduate work at the University of Miami with a full academic scholarship where he graduated magna cum laude. He then went to the prestigious Northwestern University where he was a Rhodes scholar nominee. He did a year of internal medicine at St Francis Hospital in Evanston, Illinois and completed his ophthalmolog training at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

People who have diabetes mellitus do not use and store blood sugar properly and the amount of sugar in the blood will be too high. High blood sugar levels can damage vessels in the retina. This damage is referred to as diabetic retinopathy.

Eyelid Surgery
Non-surgical treatments for dry eye include blinking exercises, increasing humidity at home or work, and use of artificial tears or moisturizing ointment. If these methods fail, small punctal plugs may be inserted in the corners of the eyes to limit tear drainage, or the drainage tubes in the eyes may be surgically closed. Eyelid surgery is also a solution if an eyelid condition is causing your dry eyes.
