Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an eye disease in which pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) rises dangerously high, damaging the optic nerve and causing vision loss. In a healthy eye, fluid is produced in the ciliary body, enters the eye, and then drains through tiny passages called the trabecular meshwork. In people with glaucoma, these passages become blocked and intraocular pressure rises.
Ophthalmology
Dr. John P. Rundle is a board-certified ophthalmologist with many years of practice experience. He is one of the founding physicians of Vancouver Eye Care, establishing the practice called Vancouver Eye Associates in 1968 after completing his medical education and training. Dr. Rundle received his medical degree from the University of Oregon Medical School. He then served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force for two years before returning to Portland, Oregon to complete his post-graduate residency in ophthalmology at The Devers Memorial Eye Clinic at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon.

Most people develop cataracts, a cloudy lens in the eye, simply as a result of aging, with the majority of cases occurring in people over the age of 55. Other risk factors include eye injury or disease, a family history of cataracts, smoking, or the use of certain medications.
Cataract Surgery
For people whose vision is significantly affected by cataracts, lens replacement (cataract) surgery may be recommended. During cataract surgery, the most common surgical procedure in the country, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial one called an intraocular lens or IOL.

Dr. Mauricio R. Chavez earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois in 2003. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in 2007. Dr. Chavez also completed an American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery sponsored two-year fellowship in Oculofacial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Oregon Health & Science University – Casey Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon in 2009. After his fellowship, he was in private practice in Colorado and California. He was recruited by Vancouver Eye Care to better care for our patients and to expand services for our referring physicians.

Blepharoplasty
This surgery is often performed to improve visual function by excising the excessive skin and fat from the upper, and sometimes lower, eyelids. When the eyelids are literally blocking a significant amount of the upper or peripheral field of vision, insurance will typically pay for the procedure. A very similar procedure can be performed for cosmetic reasons to enhance the appearance of the eyelids. However, when a blepharoplasty is performed for cosmetic reasons insurance does not cover the procedure.
Cosmetic Surgery
Dr. Chavez is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. In addition, he has authored and co-authored textbook chapters and medical journal articles in the field of Oculofacial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Chavez’s clinical interests include the diagnosis and treatment of eyelid, tear duct, and orbital disease and cosmetic surgery of the eyelids and brow. He has a special interest in endoscopic brow and tear duct surgery.

Skin Cancer
Skin cancer can affect the delicate eyelids. The most common skin cancers of the eyelids are sun-induced basal cell carcinoma. These can be resected in the office with frozen margin controls to minimize the chance of recurrence. The defect is then repaired using a variety of reconstructive techniques.
